If nobody was trying to make frank this way, you'd think a bit of his original self would peek out now and then. If anything though, the cause would likely be executive meddling.

I'll never forget the day I went into Gamestop and heard about Dead Rising 4 just being released. I never played the games myself - I've only seen Whoisthisgit's Creepy Bad Endings videos on the games. After asking the clerk if Dead Rising 4 was good or not, he/she simply replied, "Well its pre-owned value is already 20 bucks and we've gotten this many returns, so I think it speaks for itself."
Due to the Xbox exclusivity for a time, I never touched Dead Rising 4 for a bit. Despite seeing what it had become, I still wanted to give it a chance. Forming my own opinions on it. When I finally played it, I came to the conclusion that I don't mind it's existence. It is a tolerable 5/10 at its best although it is a constant reminder that this game essentially the death of one of my favorite franchise. I can separate it enough from the other games in the series to judge it as it's own thing. With that said though, the first two, especially Off the Record are 100% better than the fourth onr
If there is any solace to be had in those interviews with Joe Nickolls, it is knowing that after the colossal failure that DR4 was, he was forced out of Capcom Vancouver, went to EA, and now spends the rest of his days forced to work on endless FIFA games. I'd say he lives in his own personal hell now.
Could you imagine how good the story could have been if done right? Frank west in his older years starts to suffer from ptsd because he’s spent years covering wars and outbreaks, watching people die, the human body put up on macabre display and coming so close to deaths door. It gets to the point it’s wearing on his mental state, he can’t go to malls anymore because the customers walking aimlessly sometimes reminds him of zombies and he breaks into panicked episodes. Maybe show him trying to shop during the holidays and him thinking he’s in an outbreak, ready to grab whatever he can get his hands on out of instinct. Show how he can’t lead a normal life, but also that he’s trying. Then if you really need to keep Vick, you can have her as the sympathetic student who is almost like a Katie to him. Have her want to help him because of a bond we don’t know about yet. Then we could have led into her taking Frank to Willamette memorial because she wants to help him get over his trauma that he shared with her. Then they get there, end up stuck because Vick sees something fishy is going on, so she runs in to take pics. Have her go missing. Dash elements of the cloning in and BOOM. That would make the game about him needing to try and repress his feelings and be strong, throwing himself back in like a fish out of water to try and save someone who has been trying to save him too. All in the place where it all began. Seeing survivors die all over again. If your going to kill off Frank you could make it seem almost like a mercy if this was the way the story was framed. Have him wanting to die not just as a heroic act, but because he feels like he’s too old and too damaged to help anyone else anymore because he can’t even help himself like he could before. In turn you could make this fuck up Vick and have her gain the same problems that Frank had, thus creating an understanding and bond that would be immortalized in pain and corruption.
Beautifully written, sir. Hats off to you. This would've been a great story. At the very least, better than what they did. Sounds kinda like the story of Logan, that wolverine movie. Doing that sort of thing with Frank would've been very cool.

The DR4 developer interviews genuinely feel like they're from another universe. I've never seen a development team so far removed from what the original games, even the one JUST BEFORE theirs, were even like.

Dead Rising on the 360 at launch was special, some of the best memories I've had while gaming when I was young. When I got a PS5 a few months ago, the first game I beat was Dead Rising 1, I guarantee I was the only one playing OG Dead Rising on their PS5! Still as good as I remember it after all the years!

While I don't think that Frank West should be the protagonist for DR5, I think it would be dope to have a scene with him where he watches "the movie", leaves halfway through the session and says something like: "Knew I shouldn't have given them the rights for this... What was I thinking?"
This is the problem with focus groups. They target a general audience which doesn't work for game franchises built on a more distinct niche. People who want less hardcore features in Dead Rising don't care about the brand and the people who adore the brand lose the things that made it distinctive in the process. No one ends up happy with the product. It's textbook homogenization and it rarely works out for an IP unless it is done very slowly or as part of a reboot. At least then the fans can kind of read the intentions and make their choice to continue and new fans don't feel off put by the previous track laid in terms of a reboot. From a purely business angle that can work, from an artistic angle, I get real tired of everyone chasing the unicorn that is the general and casual audience. It ruins the variety we have with games.

27:50 - to be fair, survivors being potentially OP started with vanilla DR2, not DR3. Thing is, if you handed them firearms, they (unlike you) would have infinite ammo. Which led to some ridiculous scenarios where you could farm the secret heavy machinegun hidden above the casino, then arm an entire team of survivors which will effortlessly carry you in boss fights up until the point where you're forced to return to administer zombrex to your daughter (which despawns them). This also made the tense moment where safehouse is breached into a complete joke.
Hell get the Cultist manual, and the right weapons and survivors are pretty good in the first game as well. But yea, DR2 survivors trivilized some bosses
I like how they talk bad about the time and are like "people don't want to play it again" and makes me wonder if they played the older versions of the game. I saved all the survivors and felt like I did something awesome. With no time limit, then that isn't a challenge. That's just something that'll happen. Not something I have to set out to do.
Am I the only one who think zombies have way more psychological horror to them than people give them credit for or depict them with? They are literally human bodies. Imagine seeing your mom, dad, best friend, spouse, even kids, decomposed and bloody, and trying to KILL YOU? It's dark af. Ive said it before but i will say it again. It baffles me that, NO ONE, called Joe Nichols out on his obvious lies during his numerous interviews! He singlehandedly killed Frank West and buried the franchise. Frank West is a main character in the Capcom stable as he appears in crossover games so I wonder if Capcom knew that they were going to kill him?
I'm not that big on zombies but I have a soft spot for Resident Evil and other properties that do them differently (the necromorphs in Dead Space come to mind).
I will admit, I was one person that wasn't a big fan of the time limit so really couldn't get into 1 and never played the rest, but getting rid of it did not bring me in, in fact, that would be a bigger turn off for me, I may not be a fan of it, but more liked it the time limit.
Remember playing the first Dead Rising when I was a kid. That scene where the old lady opens the door and lets the zombies in fucked with me so bad I had nightmares from it. No idea why.
The first time i ever saw a sequel to a game i liked announced and felt "I don't want this" was the reveal of dead rising 3, holy crap that was a terrible reveal. the end product ended up being a perfectly fine game, but I could tell Dead rising as i loved it was gone, and DR4 was the nail in the coffin

I enjoyed the first Dead Rising, but I had no idea what was going on because I played it on a normal TV and the text was so small. Never played any of the other ones after that.
When it comes to Dead Rising 3 I was under the impression that when it was under development there was a very real possibility that the project was going to be cancelled since the Xbox 360 was having issues running the game at a a consistent frame rate, and the PS3 version wasn't stable in any sense of the word, and the only reason the game was ever finished was due to the extra funds that Microsoft invested in the project thanks to the exclusivity deal they made with Capcom. Not to mention the additional development time the team was given since the game was now going to be released on the Xbox One rather than the 360.
Personally, the biggest issues I had with DR4 was how massive the world was with very little to do in it aside from just killing zombies and the combo weapons. The combo weapons were the thing I adored in DR2&3 especially on first playthrough and just putting random items together to see what you could get. The whole item aspect thing in DR4 ruined that as you NEEDED the blueprints and thus couldn't experiment. They were also so nonsensical that they seem more like something out of a cartoon than a zombie game. I'm not one to cry about realism, but I can't grasp the impact of a staff that summons a small army of exploding gnomes like I can bowie knives attached to boxing gloves. One feels unrealistic while the other is pure fantasy.
Also what the hell do they mean “they don’t want to play the game again” my first play though of persona 5 was garbage and when I found out about other confidants and different ways I gain stats. I started it over and enjoyed the content I didn’t see before.
I loved DR3. Nick is a fun character and multiplayer is a lot of fun. They focus more on the zombie killing aspect of the game and less on the story, if that's something you care about... But, the game felt good to play. As time goes on, you will notice that there are more and more zombies. If you don't abuse the weapons lockers, you get a decent challenge and never really feel overpowered. Even when I had my stats maxed out, the zombies still felt like a threat and the game kinda scared me lol. I still view it as one of my favorites.
After a few beers and an extra infusion of holiday spirit, I played Dead Rising 4 tonight. If you treat it as a Charlie Brown Christmas-ass spin-off and just have fun, it is actually a brilliant game.
Willamate is a river in Oregon that's pronuced the way it is in the trailer, so the actor probably just read it that way not realizing "Will-a-mit" is supposed to be a place in Colorado.
To summarize my feelings on the series: DR1 was an absolute mess and I totally loved it. DR4 was an absolute mess and I totally despised it. You understand.
Pretty much every piece of zombie media follow the same trope " humans r the real monstars" or humans are the actual antagonists. I hate TLoU2 for other strong reasons, but it's hardly alone in being guilty about pushing zombies to the sideline with humans. From Night of the living dead to Resident Evil to the Walking Dead, they all follow that exact same cliche. Dead Rising is super guilty of it too. Dying Light, Dead Island, I can go on. I think L4D is the only game I can think of where zombies are very much not just pure set dressing, zombies are very much the big bad.
Loved this video, sub earned. The worst thing to happen to Dead Rising is Capcom haven’t even cared to patch that save corrupt glitch in Franks Big Package. About 60 or so hours wasted due to that. I hope we get to see a Dead Rising 5 long before they start remastering the original games. Stay true to the games and don’t side line like they have with Resident Evil. Sure those games are now still loved but they massacred the original idea for what it is today. I’d love to see either a darker game like DR1 or 3 again but I sure did love DR2. Hell even DR4 was fun but needed more work put into it. Loved the Christmas time setting it had and back in a mall.

God, I was excited to see this video. Dead Rising is my absolutely favorite video game series. The death of the franchise as it is was extremely unfortunate and while, Dead Rising 4 isn't that bad. It was tolerable at best and death of the franchise at worst. I can't watch this right now but, I will absolutely watch this as soon as I can.
I love Dead rising for a bunch of reasons. Killing zombies was the biggest reason obviously, but the way you did it was sheer awesomeness. You could have the biggest guns, the wackiest weapons, or even just a pie in the face. It was pure chaos and it was a wonderful concoction. And you know what? The survivors you helped weren't bad. Yeah I didn't care much for the escort missions, no one ever does, but being able to group around with survivors was a lot of fun! The set pieces for both the first and second game were probably the best. The malls were big enough to explore a ton of different places, but it was just small enough for you to not get lost so long as you looked at your map. Hell, Dead rising 3 wasn't a terrible game, but it definitely didn't feel as great and as colorful as the first two were. Dead rising 4 I never got to play. I just bought it at a steam sale, but now I regret purchasing it if this is what it's going to give me. I want to thank you for this extra long review, and I just subscribed.
I liked all three of DR's protagonists. Frank felt like Ben from Night of the Living Dead; like Ben, Frank clearly isn't some bloodthirsty soldier boi, but a regular guy who is having to do some nutty shit to survive. Chuck is a little more stoic, but he still cares about people; you can definitely see his influence on how Katey turned out as a person. Nick, meanwhile, is a sweet boi. Again, he's a average Joe that doesn't want to flambeye someone with a penis flamethrower (yes, that's an optional weapon, it's fucking hilarious), but he'll do it if someone needs help and you're posting cringe. All in all, I'm sad this series is in such a state. I remember finding Dead Rising in a Game Stop. Zombies and a shopping mall to fuck around in? You sonuvabitch, I'm in.
Nick it made sense with crafting but for frank to do it on the fly now is suoer weird that's what made nick unique to me was since he was a mechanic he could build and whip stuff together on the fly story wise it made sense just carried it over to 4 without explanation or context to how frank learned to.
The original pronunciation of Willamette is the one im used too because I live in an area named that and thats how we say it, it always confused me why Dead Rising pronounced it that way 😅

Although vampires are considered undead their skin isn't rotting off and they become undead from turning to begin with (oddly meaning they don't need to die first unlike zombies and jiangshi).

I think that dead rising 4 ended up being a parody of its series. I don't think DR4 is as awful as the rest of the world seems to think. I'm a massive DR fan I replay 1 and 2 every October for Halloween. DR4 is a bad dead rising game but it's not really a bad game. The actual gameplay is fun and streamlined for casual players. It was made to get new players into the series and tailored to as many ppl as possible. Although I enjoy the original games much more I do have some fun memories with DR4.

Dead Rising was definitely one of the best zombie games in history. It definitely stood out from the zombie media crowd.
Dead Rising on the 360 at launch was special, some of the best memories I've had while gaming when I was young. When I got a PS5 a few months ago, the first game I beat was Dead Rising 1, I guarantee I was the only one playing OG Dead Rising on their PS5! Still as good as I remember it after all the years!

This is the problem with focus groups. They target a general audience which doesn't work for game franchises built on a more distinct niche. People who want less hardcore features in Dead Rising don't care about the brand and the people who adore the brand lose the things that made it distinctive in the process. No one ends up happy with the product. It's textbook homogenization and it rarely works out for an IP unless it is done very slowly or as part of a reboot. At least then the fans can kind of read the intentions and make their choice to continue and new fans don't feel off put by the previous track laid in terms of a reboot. From a purely business angle that can work, from an artistic angle, I get real tired of everyone chasing the unicorn that is the general and casual audience. It ruins the variety we have with games.

27:50 - to be fair, survivors being potentially OP started with vanilla DR2, not DR3. Thing is, if you handed them firearms, they (unlike you) would have infinite ammo. Which led to some ridiculous scenarios where you could farm the secret heavy machinegun hidden above the casino, then arm an entire team of survivors which will effortlessly carry you in boss fights up until the point where you're forced to return to administer zombrex to your daughter (which despawns them). This also made the tense moment where safehouse is breached into a complete joke.
Hell get the Cultist manual, and the right weapons and survivors are pretty good in the first game as well. But yea, DR2 survivors trivilized some bosses
Pretty funny how you said Ace Attorney was thrown to the side and now we get the Great Ace Attorney games localized for current systems.
I like how they talk bad about the time and are like "people don't want to play it again" and makes me wonder if they played the older versions of the game. I saved all the survivors and felt like I did something awesome. With no time limit, then that isn't a challenge. That's just something that'll happen. Not something I have to set out to do.

Am I the only one who think zombies have way more psychological horror to them than people give them credit for or depict them with? They are literally human bodies. Imagine seeing your mom, dad, best friend, spouse, even kids, decomposed and bloody, and trying to KILL YOU? It's dark af. It's sad you basically never see media explore that aspect of them and just treat them as funny shooting barrels

He singlehandedly killed Frank West and buried the franchise. Frank West is a main character in the Capcom stable as he appears in crossover games so I wonder if Capcom knew that they were going to kill him?
I'm not that big on zombies but I have a soft spot for Resident Evil and other properties that do them differently (the necromorphs in Dead Space come to mind).

I will admit, I was one person that wasn't a big fan of the time limit so really couldn't get into 1 and never played the rest, but getting rid of it did not bring me in, in fact, that would be a bigger turn off for me, I may not be a fan of it, but more liked it the time limit.
Remember playing the first Dead Rising when I was a kid. That scene where the old lady opens the door and lets the zombies in fucked with me so bad I had nightmares from it. No idea why.
The first time i ever saw a sequel to a game i liked announced and felt "I don't want this" was the reveal of dead rising 3, holy crap that was a terrible reveal. the end product ended up being a perfectly fine game, but I could tell Dead rising as i loved it was gone, and DR4 was the nail in the coffin

When it comes to Dead Rising 3 I was under the impression that when it was under development there was a very real possibility that the project was going to be cancelled since the Xbox 360 was having issues running the game at a a consistent frame rate, and the PS3 version wasn't stable in any sense of the word, and the only reason the game was ever finished was due to the extra funds that Microsoft invested in the project thanks to the exclusivity deal they made with Capcom. Not to mention the additional development time the team was given since the game was now going to be released on the Xbox One rather than the 360.

Personally, the biggest issues I had with DR4 was how massive the world was with very little to do in it aside from just killing zombies and the combo weapons. The combo weapons were the thing I adored in DR2&3 especially on first playthrough and just putting random items together to see what you could get. The whole item aspect thing in DR4 ruined that as you NEEDED the blueprints and thus couldn't experiment. They were also so nonsensical that they seem more like something out of a cartoon than a zombie game. I'm not one to cry about realism, but I can't grasp the impact of a staff that summons a small army of exploding gnomes like I can bowie knives attached to boxing gloves. One feels unrealistic while the other is pure fantasy.

I loved DR3. Nick is a fun character and multiplayer is a lot of fun. They focus more on the zombie killing aspect of the game and less on the story, if that's something you care about... But, the game felt good to play. As time goes on, you will notice that there are more and more zombies. If you don't abuse the weapons lockers, you get a decent challenge and never really feel overpowered. Even when I had my stats maxed out, the zombies still felt like a threat and the game kinda scared me lol. I still view it as one of my favorites.
After a few beers and an extra infusion of holiday spirit, I played Dead Rising 4 tonight. If you treat it as a Charlie Brown Christmas-ass spin-off and just have fun, it is actually a brilliant game.

Willamate is a river in Oregon that's pronuced the way it is in the trailer, so the actor probably just read it that way not realizing "Will-a-mit" is supposed to be a place in Colorado.
To summarize my feelings on the series:
DR1 was an absolute mess and I totally loved it.

Pretty much every piece of zombie media follow the same trope " humans r the real monstars" or humans are the actual antagonists. I hate TLoU2 for other strong reasons, but it's hardly alone in being guilty about pushing zombies to the sideline with humans. From Night of the living dead to Resident Evil to the Walking Dead, they all follow that exact same cliche. Dead Rising is super guilty of it too. Dying Light, Dead Island, I can go on.
I think L4D is the only game I can think of where zombies are very much not just pure set dressing, zombies are very much the big bad.

Sure those games are now still loved but they massacred the original idea for what it is today.
I’d love to see either a darker game like DR1 or 3 again but I sure did love DR2. Hell even DR4 was fun but needed more work put into it. Loved the Christmas time setting it had and back in a mall.

God, I was excited to see this video. Dead Rising is my absolutely favorite video game series. The death of the franchise as it is was extremely unfortunate and while, Dead Rising 4 isn't that bad. It was tolerable at best and death of the franchise at worst. I can't watch this right now but, I will absolutely watch this as soon as I can.
Dead Rising 4 went into the generic third person shooter pile, it takes away the lack of freedom you had in the prior three games.
I love Dead rising for a bunch of reasons. Killing zombies was the biggest reason obviously, but the way you did it was sheer awesomeness. You could have the biggest guns, the wackiest weapons, or even just a pie in the face. It was pure chaos and it was a wonderful concoction. And you know what? The survivors you helped weren't bad. Yeah I didn't care much for the escort missions, no one ever does, but being able to group around with survivors was a lot of fun! The set pieces for both the first and second game were probably the best. The malls were big enough to explore a ton of different places, but it was just small enough for you to not get lost so long as you looked at your map. Hell, Dead rising 3 wasn't a terrible game, but it definitely didn't feel as great and as colorful as the first two were.
Dead rising 4 I never got to play. I just bought it at a steam sale, but now I regret purchasing it if this is what it's going to give me. I want to thank you for this extra long review, and I just subscribed.

I liked all three of DR's protagonists. Frank felt like Ben from Night of the Living Dead; like Ben, Frank clearly isn't some bloodthirsty soldier boi, but a regular guy who is having to do some nutty shit to survive.
Chuck is a little more stoic, but he still cares about people; you can definitely see his influence on how Katey turned out as a person.
Nick, meanwhile, is a sweet boi. Again, he's a average Joe that doesn't want to flambeye someone with a penis flamethrower (yes, that's an optional weapon, it's fucking hilarious), but he'll do it if someone needs help and you're posting cringe.
All in all, I'm sad this series is in such a state. I remember finding Dead Rising in a Game Stop. Zombies and a shopping mall to fuck around in? You sonuvabitch, I'm in.

Nick it made sense with crafting but for frank to do it on the fly now is suoer weird that's what made nick unique to me was since he was a mechanic he could build and whip stuff together on the fly story wise it made sense just carried it over to 4 without explanation or context to how frank learned to.
The original pronunciation of Willamette is the one im used too because I live in an area named that and thats how we say it, it always confused me why Dead Rising pronounced it that way 😅

Edit: to be more specific they're like a hybrid between a zombie and vampire, because they're re-animated corpses that specifically requires blood, as opposed to brain. Although vampires are considered undead their skin isn't rotting off and they become undead from turning to begin with (oddly meaning they don't need to die first unlike zombies and jiangshi).

gee its almost like the time limit was a way to punish the player for paying too much attention to attacking random zombies for no reason rather than actually progressing in the game or something, and that the zombie fighting wasn't ALL the game was about.
I seriously beleive the DR4 devs DIDN'T play the previous games at all, otherwise they'd actually know why these systems were in place and how the game functioned.
also: "returning to the series roots" what you really mean is that you wanted to pander to nostalgia by making Frank the sole protag again, but not brign back anyone else from past games OR introduce a new hero, AND set it in the same city as the first game (and maybe set it in a mall again? I dunno I never played DR4), and drop pretty much ALL the mechanics from the series just to make it 'easier' and less interesting. They completely missed the fucking point!
and in my mind, if they amde a dead rising 5, make Katie Greene the protag, maybe have the plot be about trying to cure the zombie plague somehow or something, give the series a proper conclusion or something.

I think that dead rising 4 ended up being a parody of its series. I don't think DR4 is as awful as the rest of the world seems to think.
I'm a massive DR fan I replay 1 and 2 every October for Halloween.
DR4 is a bad dead rising game but it's not really a bad game. The actual gameplay is fun and streamlined for casual players. It was made to get new players into the series and tailored to as many ppl as possible.
Although I enjoy the original games much more I do have some fun memories with DR4.
