    • @tonyvice6661616
      @tonyvice6661616 5 років тому

      i think he means the bass parts of the drums, as well as the transients of the drums in mono. so the tail will be fed to stero space.

    • @linusberglund5109
      @linusberglund5109 6 років тому

      Not sure, but you can achieve the same thing in Pro-Q in Mid/Side Mode with the pan knob. Not as nice as toggling it with the press of a button though...

    • @supersquare
      @supersquare 6 років тому +3

      I forgot to reply here, but at 0:15 you can see D&B Jesus using a Crane Song Avocet, which offers mono toggling and mid/side soloing among other things

    • @MarkDanov
      @MarkDanov 5 років тому

      Very late reply but you can do that if you enable control room in cubase, which is actually super helpful when mixing

    Hi, you're Nik :)

  • @Shineh234
    @Shineh234 6 років тому

    but the big question I still have is: Are your tracks played in mono over big club and festival sound systems? If so, doesn't alot of the stereo information get completely lost?

    • @supersquare
      @supersquare 6 років тому

      That’s why you need a mix that collapses to mono, but has an interesting stereo field for listening literally everywhere else.

    • @Shineh234
      @Shineh234 6 років тому

      I guess that breaks down roughly to making your sounds in mono (or very mono compatible) and then using a stereo send channel with a stereo fx chain?

    • @supersquare
      @supersquare 6 років тому

      There are plenty of ways to do it, but you're on the right path of making your sounds mono compatible. You don't need to start in mono necessarily, as long as when you shift to mono, it's still intelligible and not phasing like crazy.
      Sometimes it sounds better (and is easier lol) to have a straight stereo processing chain on certain elements (like pads, fx, leads, etc), but keeping the main elements (or even just the transients like Nik was saying) mono so it translates better on systems. The stereo information isn't lost, it's just collapsed to mono. There are plenty of plugins that allow you switch a stereo signal to mono for testing also.
      Even laptop speakers and phones are going stereo now, so it's really only in certain situations where a mono mix will be used. If haven't seen it yet, you should check out Pensado's Place on youtube and his in the lair series. He demonstrates a shit ton of these techniques and others.

  • @alexchau89
    @alexchau89 6 років тому +3

    Hey, does anyone know how Nik is able to keep just the transients mono and move other parts of the sound to stereo?

    • @valkata1997

    • @itikus5114
      @itikus5114 6 років тому +2

      Use a Mid Side eq to keep the fundamentalsof the drums in mono. Or Izotope stereo imager to keep sepecific freq bands in mono.

    • @adriencastberg
      @adriencastberg 6 років тому +3

      Duplicate your hit/sample, mix one of them and keep it mono, use a haas effect or any sort of creative mixing to widen the second hit so it occupies stereo. Then go thru and EQ each sample so that you're isolating the parts you want in mono and the part you want in stereo. You might keep the majority of the mono hit intact, and then eq out some top end on the stereo one. Do this in context of the rest of the song so you find where they sit best, not where they sounds good solo'd. Balance the levels of the mono/stereo hits to your liking (again, in context of the song), throw some saturation and glue compression on it.

    This is driving me nuts I cant figure it out how come he says the bass is being sidechained where in channel 37 called "Copy of SC Trigger" there is no signal comming out of it? I use Cubase aswell but if someone is into audio and know what i am missing would be very helpful. Thanks!.

    • @MarkDanov
      @MarkDanov 5 років тому

      Closest I've gotten is to use LFOtool (plugin) which is basically a volume envelope that can be triggered by a midi signal.

    • @SeidGibbons
      @SeidGibbons 4 роки тому

      you can use it to trigger the sidechain, but have the output routed to no bus. simple way would be just duplicate your kick track, and remove all output routing. very handy way to have more control over your sidechaining
