    • @msmelissamcrae

@Nathan Cross you can read what i wrote above, i don't beat around the bush. She was not a victim until she was told she was. She purposely distances herself, using harshness and delusions of Righteousness.. I'm a victim of physical, mental, and sexual abuse starting at age 7 by my own moms dad, my mom knew he was abusive and remained complacent just so we had a place to live. That's what a Victim is, Not an Adult throwing her personal relationship away with her family in order to Shine in Her own light, she never asked for help, in fact she continued to shut her mother down everytime she tried to "Rescue" her. She never felt like she was a hostage nor a victim of any crime until Keith got arrested. She had no where to go, but home to her mom. I am a strong married mentally healthy adult who doesn't Allow Anyone to Cover up the Truth about abusers and abuse.

I live in the Capital Region of Upstate NY, and was pretty shocked to read the news about this last Summer in 2019 about how this organization was able to thrive and this man was able to get away with it for so long. I watched the entire series and finished it up, and I can tell you after watching all 9 parts, you feel like and glad you never were involved in this organization. The hq on New Karner Road was near the training center where I took my CNA courses and so I would walk by the offices many times over 10 years ago. His other office by Fred The Butcher I drove by on my way to work many times over a few years back while they were in operation. His lairs were nearby where my wife's friends lived in Clifton Park. I remember the big news in my area where the Dalai Lama visited the Palace Theater nearby where I lived 20 minutes from there by car back in 2009. Yeah for me its a big deal, because so many famous people got sucked up into this including a couple of Billionaire heiresses, and then a celebrity to run a sex ring. We have private small businesses that I seen at job fairs like the Times Union one that would be a similiar business model and pyramid scheme. I was positive at one time at one of these fairs at the Marriot back in the late 1990s or 2000s, these guys had a booth, and a gal that looked and resembled Nancy Saltzman, would be there to recruit. I am not positive, but I do remember a woman looking like her. Then there be another time sometime in the 2000s when shopping at the mall of Crossgates, crossing paths with this guy who was shorter than me that looked exactly like the founder, glasses, Joel Higgins the actor from Silver Spoons, haircut type walking by me with some nicely dressed people. Just happy to see that the man got caught, the people were able to get the evidence together and shut down the organization completely. Now that its been in the news, I plan to drive by and see these places for what they are just to get a couple pictures of the history before I move on and go about my daily life. Glad India reunited with her mom. Wish them well.

Around 7:00 as she talks about how crazy it all is to have gained something from this... You gained a lot from the experience that many won't. I'm in no way comparing my situation to this, but I went threw a brutal first marriage. Narcissistic, controlling, and yet I kept fighting to stay in it to try and make her happy and for the kids. When I finally broke free and left, looking back it was absolutely insane I stayed so long, but that's the environment a narcissistic person creates. That was years ago, I'm remarried, and I can say without a doubt, without that experience I wouldn't quite be the man I am today. I don't take anything for granted and am a better husband because of it. It's these experiences that mold us into better people.

There is a unique strength and beauty to those who have gone through cults or abusive relationships, survived, battled, won and found themselves again. 💙
Don't trust people who are grandiose and manipulative. Walk away fast. TRUST your instincts and if someone tells you not to trust your instincts then know you can not trust them. There are many, many avenues for self improvement and self-reflection that are not predatory, that are healthy and have boundaries, and support you maintaining your dignity and independence.

What a beautifully spoken woman India is. Reminds me of Elizabeth Smart and how she turned her torture into an empowering voice!
But again, tonight Im most struck by the connection between these two. .Mom and Daughter.
Aching for my own I guess and a lil jealous. 😥
Still, marveling in the Beauty of what is here. Its Powerful. Whew!
My mom completed suicide. This mom had the fight.
And although those sound very different..
    With healing,
I recognize that both stories are more about learned lessons than circumstances or outcomes.
Trauma I believe is always present to teach us something about ourselves if we are paying attention.
    Gratitude. 🌻

What makes this story so intrigueing is the fact that I have lived in Albany, NY since the mid to late 1980s, and Keith Raniere graduated RPI ( the same college my close friends graduated from in the late 1990s near where my parents live.) and ran NXIVM the last 20 years while I have lived here and all that time able to get away with it while the authorities were'nt doing anything. The ESP building on New Karner Rd was right by where I took my CNA classes back in 2010. The other HQ was located by Fred the Butcher shop on RT9 in Clifton Park, I passed by there many times over in 2000s and 2010s before the feds came in and shut the entire operation down. Keith's lairs where he did all the sex trafficking with his master mind cult ringleader Allison Mack, both their addresses are nearby where my wife's friends lived by a mile away. Even in 2017 when I visited I once drove thru that part to find our friend's houses, very nice and calming quiet neighborhood, so I could see why Keith and Allison would chose this neighborhood, so no one would be suspicious. What makes these people dangerous was the fact he looked like an ordinary joe a amateur version of Scientology, but in the end, he managed to dupe the smartest and most talented people and brainwash them into financing his operation and using women who were fragile and insecure with themselves who were smart and articulate to brainwash them for his pleasure. Glad Catherine and India got out of it, and many others fought back and brought this evil man down and his organization. Hopefully with his sentencing on October 25th,2020 he will be put up for life imprisonment and sent away to a Supermax prison for the rest of his life and his loyal followers that are still out they get prosecuted and do some jail time. I know for his lover Allison, her career as an actress is all but over and I hope she gets at least 20-30 years in a prison minimum and no chance of parole till she served 20 Years. Then have to pay restitution and fines. I am sure I probally at one time crossed paths with this guy at a mall or a job fair, along with his lieutenants Nancy Saltzman, and I am sure if I did back in the 1990s, since I did sales in a pyramid scheme one time after I woke up and realized I gotten taken advantage of and left, I can see how easily manipulated it can happen to anybody. Glad I found out about this and will make sure to share this story with as many people I know, so I can educate and warn them about cults how easily it can happen to anybody and anywhere, if they let their guards down and feel insecure with themselves. Stay safe everybody and god bless.

Watching the Vow and Ireland's story really resonates with my experience even though I wasn't in a cult. I've likened it to an addiction. Ireland sounds like she had an incredible therapist/deprogrammer (and support system with her mom), to have such an articulate understanding of the experience. I've been out for over a decade and it's still hard to put my story into words.

Vicente will continue to be duped- he seems to want to be a follower. Vicente’s movie got me in to the ramtha cult, where I stayed for 9 yrs, getting progressively more crazy and more depressed. Came out w more PTSD. Read about Scientology, saw the docs, awakened to atheism. Started reading everything. Found steve hassan, cult expert, best-selling author. Enormously helpful. Found a good therapist. Worked hard. No gods, no masters. There is no other life. ps India, unlike most(?)who enter cults, is amazingly fortunate to have such a fierce mother

Yes, that's what is interesting that despite ll the Bronfman money KR was brought down when Scientology has not been. However the FLDS - Warren Jeffs was the same - both groups bhrought down because the leader had sex with someone under age. Many other cults are cleverer and just avoid that and do fine. Yet even there the FLDS is run by Jeffs from prison and KR has followers still loyal outside the prison dancing for him every day - neither group is entirely crushed.

Cults break your persona down and rebuild it to their own purpose. But the existence of the "persona" itself is what leads people to be susceptible to this. When you understand you are not your thoughts. You are not the concept of self your thoughts construct in your mind which can be manipulated by forces around you. You are the life energy within you and this always has immense value. There are no qualifiers for that value. It just IS. Once you recognize this, you don't need to build a persona so there is nothing for cult leaders to break down and no hole within you for them to fill.

I have social phobia and hope to find a legit group/social event for help. Now because of what happened with India, I a bit more cautious now and looking out for anything suspicious. Not to pass judgement, but what happened to India's father and what does he have to say about this situation? I asking because I learned that not having a father/father figure can play a role in relationships with men, making you valuable to abuse and some cases Cults. Cult Leaders/Members can use a desperate need for a father's love/approval to control and manipulate potential victims. If that's the case, I'm glad India has the love and help to not only put this chapter in her life behind her, but the tools to learn to be a wonderful mother and better parent to her future children.

A good licenced therapist can help with any kind of phobia. As Catherine said, if you stick with people who are licenced you will be much safer.
Years of abuse research show that there are no clear patterns amongst victims that cause their abuse, including being raised by a solo parent. There is not much benefit in pathologising victims. As Catherine and India said in the interview, it is just about being in a vulnerable stage in life. The consistent pattern is among the predators and their manipulation. I have to wonder what Keith's upbringing was like.
