Your timing of videos is so funny to my car troubles I must share this story a month or so ago my 87 Ram chargers drive line exploded while driving down the road. I thought it was the drive line come to find out the rear end came apart. trying to Find gears and things to Rebuild the rear end I Found a used rear axle and put it in after Driving it The Used rear end was howling and making a lot of noise so I bought a new set of gears from rigid axles and Wanted to put in new gears Myself Never doing it before I wasn't a 100% confident doing it and the gears were quite expensive I called many shops and I had a lot of shops that would not do it they weren't trained and did know how to Install gears. I finally found a shop that could do it and they installed the gears and then charged me full rate and gave me the truck back my speedometer was off and the truck drove funny come to find out the gear set that was delivered was wrong the people that installed it knew it was wrong when they installed it but because I supplied them they said that was my fault instead of calling me and asking they even knew The reason it was there was for noisy gears and that I did not want to change the ratio. So then I had to order a new set of gears the correct set and have them installed. my $2000 toy 87 Ram charger just cost me $2300 for the rear end I should of done it myself
I was too, for a long time. But eventually was in a situation where I just kind of had to, and after making a couple mild tactical errors, I got the hang of it.
I just picked up 96 bronco that will need a new ring and pinion. Watching some other videos that were super in depth made the job seem very intimidating, watching this makes it seem much better to do 😊
Great job ! I can't wait for the 8-3/4 sure grip sequel. I need to change the gears on my challenger. I think when I do that I'm gonna do a disc brake conversion too.
Geezo! I missed this video the other day somehow! I blame it on my stupid finger. I rebuilt my Dana 60 with a Richmond kit. The supplied yellow goop would not produce a good reading. I used white spray paint, and it worked great! I'm amazed that neither of you spurted any blood! Good job you guys! And remember... if you can't laugh at yourself, I will do it for you! (Another Bad Ash original!)
Oh that’s a good one. Haha. Yes, remarkably little blood was shed that day. We’re doing the Dana 30 front end in the jeep today. No blood… but lots of god damn obscenities, fuck this thing.
I will see what I can do, but it seems more likely I would have my hands in the 741/742. I will try to do a big video where I cover the differences between them.
What causes the backlash-like clunk from both axles (sometimes solo, sometimes both) but it’s not from incorrect backlash? Driving me nuts …only happens when accelerating or decelerating / weight shift on axles, and everything looks damn near new. Can Incorrect preload with adjustables on carrier cause that? Chrysler 8.25 in 07 Nitro R/T
I’ve experienced that myself, and unfortunately I really can’t say. I can tell you that the Chrysler 8.25 and 9.25 have relatively sloppy pinion setup specs compared to other axles, so perhaps that accounts for some of it. Those rear ends are also very hard on axle shaft / wheel bearings for some reason. Make sure your u-joints and transfer case (assuming this is 4x4) are in good shape and that’s about all you can do.
The gear surface isn't rusted. That is spalling. It is a form of gear wear where the surface separates from the rest of the parent material due to fatigue.
Why is it only showing that wear in areas that do not make contact between the two gears? And why are those areas full of rust staining? The pattern looks just like several rusty gear sets that I found pictures of online - gear sets that, like this one, have sat around unused for years and have seen way more moisture than they ever should have. I don’t know what the mechanical process for preserving the areas that make contact is, but I suspect the forces acting on the gear oil film between the two gears could explain it. I don’t know how a gear could fatigue in an area that - at least when cold - makes no contact with its mated gear.
Or if you don't have a fancy dial indicator get you some shoe Polish and look for a cigar shaped imprint on the gears that's the Old School way for some of us who do it in the driveway who Don't have Fancy dial indicators from Harbor for
Yeah well..... I looked at the yellow 💛 TJ jeep 👀 wrangler ..... And the Studebaker 🤭 Mmmmm...... pudding 🍮 for diff , fluid " No , I don't remember , Why would you do that ? " .....LMAO 😂 Jesus Chrysler !! That phase angle is , quite substantial !! Oh , Christ , I hate dual pattern wheels too
The angle is likely why the double cardan joint decided to exit stage right. (I'm the owner of Jeep. It also needs the front diff re-done(re-geared+lunchbox), so I'll be convincing him to help me with that one as well. haha.)
"There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents" - Bob Ross. Great video as usual.
That was straightforward. Made the job look a lot more doable.

Jeepy goodness. Great video dude!
Looking forward to the 8.75 rebuild and setup..With sure grip and new gears hopefully
Rear ends. What a happy subjec!
Great video! I've never wrenched on a differential. Scared of 'em.
I was too, for a long time. But eventually was in a situation where I just kind of had to, and after making a couple mild tactical errors, I got the hang of it.
You have good taste in tools (the brand name and the cobbled together varieties).
Great job! Great information! Great video!👍

It’s not too bad a job! Just use care and don’t forget any important steps. Haha.
Even though it was a Ford, still interesting. All good to know. Just found a Studebaker in my local old car yard.and it was mostly there.
Great job ! I can't wait for the 8-3/4 sure grip sequel. I need to change the gears on my challenger. I think when I do that I'm gonna do a disc brake conversion too.
Another kick ass video

Holy Shit! I didn't know we can cuss on here! Fucking awesome!@@DeadDodgeGarage
Cool to see you working on 4wds👍
Oh I’m all in on the 4x4 truck and Jeep stuff. But the viewers usually aren’t. Haha.
should look at the diff cover video that Gayle Banks did and heat tells how the pinion is oiled
Studebaker...yummmmmyyy!!!!
When you do the 8 3/4 video, can you make sure to include details about the 489 case? Fixing to have to rebuild one i just bought. Thanks!
I will see what I can do, but it seems more likely I would have my hands in the 741/742. I will try to do a big video where I cover the differences between them.
Complicated, delicate, brutal & easy all on the same job....
yes, do a mopar 8-3/4 rear please.
I will!
Set mine up richmond 4:10 0:13 backlash, honestly i liked 3:55 best" over 323"s
Well that wasn't as bad to do as I thought it was going to be!

@@DeadDodgeGarage ya I’ve been reading that, giving it one more go tmr since learning about carrier preload🤞🏻thx
Good content thank you...
I have a limited slip that came with my Lil Red…never had the guts to put it in.

Ford rear end in a jeep. What's the diff?
At least an inch of ring gear. Haha.
Or if you don't have a fancy dial indicator get you some shoe Polish and look for a cigar shaped imprint on the gears that's the Old School way for some of us who do it in the driveway who Don't have Fancy dial indicators from Harbor for
Oh I paid way more than harbor freight price for that one… but $20 says it’s the same junk. Dial already broke once.
Yeah well.....
I looked at the yellow 💛 TJ

As long as you didn’t look at the frame rails…

Oo oo that smell, cancha smell that smell.
I'm pretty sure you forgot to drop something on your foot :-)
I very nearly dropped the carrier on my nuts!
DDG Sunday
kind of like a outdrive on a boat, sorta almost
I’ve never had to get into one of those yet. My boat has a Volvo Penta Duo Drive… I’ve heard they’re a nightmare. Can’t wait.
So just don’t have abs???
This jeep sure doesn’t
Helpful, kind of, I guess
Ok
Now to compare to a Dodge 8 3/4"... LOL
We’ll get to that. Haha.
I got the munchies.
Yeah me working on a car never want to do that.
Don’t blame you 😅 I don’t always have fun
Don`t you just love the smell of gear oil? Even better when you get it on your sammich. Mmm yummy.
And all over your pants and jacket 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage Don`t forget to get it liberally in your hair too. Extra special. :)
Dead Jeep Garage today I C
He told me, "I don't want to make a video of a jeep. It's not mopar" but then he did anyway. XD
You sound like Trogoly....
What’s a Trogoly?
Jeeps.... ugh!
