I saw him in Brisbane Queensland Australia.....he was singing from the pulpit of a beautiful church ......left and made his way down the isle, stopped by my side and sang to me. Never never forgot. I do love him so. Miss him. Play his music all the time and introduce him still to people who have never heard his god given awesome glorious voice.
In the '70's six of us booked a box in the Albert Hall and I managed to get a message to Ivan before the concert. He turned to our box, looked up and said "To Pam the Canadian on her birthday I will sing Evening Bells". ... And he faced us and sang the whole song to her. Wonderful! We of course were all in tears!
Diana Gillen-Buchert Amazing thanks for sharing! This song is exceedingly powerful and very emotional. No one can sing it like the late great Ivan Rebreoff. Here is the translation of the words: Those evening bells! Those evening bells! How many a tale their music tells Of youth, and home and that sweet time, When last I heard their soothing chime. Those joyous hours are past away, And many a heart that then was gay Within the tomb now darkly dwells And hears no more these evening bells. And so 'twill be when I am gone; That tuneful peal will still ring on While other bards will walk these dells, And sing your praise, sweet evening bells.
+John Piper .....Many Thanks for these words (John / Diana....... appreciated ...a very touching song and now that I can understand the sentiments, even more so!
My Father 'discovered' Ivan Rebroff on a European Satellite Programme and was captivated. He was in awe of the man mountain's vocal range and played his collection to anyone who would listen! We sadly lost my Dad in 200 and it was a privilege for me to organise his funeral servie which of course included Evening Bells and lonely Chimes.
He toured South Africa in 1968 and saw him perform in the Durban City Hall which held about 1200 people. Standing room only . An incredible man with an amazing voice
Yes indeed. Was just so fortunate to see him live . What a huge man he was. At least 6' 7" tall and almost as broad across the shoulders and chest..I must have been around 26 at the time I saw him.
I m the same, this song & his voice resonates with me into my very soul. There s just such a 'Hiraeth' ( Welsh) nostalgia to it that it seems to flood into your very soul❤⚘
I've seen him when he was on tour in South Africa many years ago.i do not think tere was , is or shall be another person with the voice like Ivan Rebroff.
Все интерпритации ,,Вечернего звона" Реброва превосходны,он прекрасно знал русскую музыку ,мог передать все интонации.Исполнение Ивана Павловича всегда превосходно!
I saw him in Napier NZ with Lou Vandermeer He went to hava chat to him after in drssng room and of course I followed Ivan asked if Lou spokè French to which Lou rsplied 'un peu un peu' n so had a French chat but speaki g too fast to catch more.I have always loved that voice .
Wife and I shared an evening with him at the Centennial Hall in Adelaide, in the 70's, Vocal gymnastics with a great voice. Though I much prefer Nicholai Gedde singing this song. Russian folk music performed by great artists is just so incredible.
I met this wonderful man at the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver, BC, Canada. That was nearly 50 years ago.
Went to see him at the Festival Centre in Adelaide, South Australia, man what a great singer and a great show.
Amazing Voice and great Personality!!!
Absolutely beautiful ....very moving

That is so cool that he did that.
The first time I hears him, I almost stopped breathing. There will never be a Voice like his again.
