  • This is a recording from the Cardiomyopathy UK 2022 Conference.
Our conference events bring together leading cardiomyopathy clinicians to present and respond to audience questions.
In this video, Professor Graham Stuart discusses Left Ventricular Non-Compaction (LVNC), Restrictive Cardiomyopathy (RCM) and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
    Key Topics:
    00:05:15 - What are cardiomyopathies?
00:11:18 - What does a normal heart look like?
    LVNC
00:13:18 - What does the LVNC heart look like?
00:14:58 - What are the symptoms of LVNC?
00:19:13 - Audience question - Is it possible to monitor heart rate variability (HRV) in LVNC? What does HRV indicate?
    00:21:20 - What causes LVNC?
00:25:02 - How is LVNC diagnosed?
00:27:20 - How is LVNC treated?
00:31:12 - Does my family have LVNC?
00:35:58 - Audience question - What is the trajectory of prognosis for LVNC? What is the future goal for LVNC?
00:37:06 - Audience question - How important are ejection fraction changes in LVNC?
00:39:19 - Audience question - Is it possible to increase your ejection fraction in LVNC?
00:41:32 - Audience question - If I have an ICD, does that mean I can’t have an MRI?
00:42:45 - Audience question - Have you ever heard of anyone else that has both LVNC and a muscle-wasting disease?
    Restrictive cardiomyopathy
00:45:47 - What does restrictive cardiomyopathy look like?
00:46:22 - How does restrictive cardiomyopathy affect you?
00:47:26 - What causes restrictive cardiomyopathy?
00:49:11 - How is restrictive cardiomyopathy diagnosed?
00:52:05 - How is restrictive cardiomyopathy treated?
00:53:24 - Audience question - Because the left ventricle is so stiff, could restrictive cardiomyopathy lead to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction [HFpEF]?
00:54:31 - What are the future therapies for restrictive cardiomyopathy?
00:56:03 - Does my family have restrictive cardiomyopathy?
00:57:03 - Audience question - What do you mean when you say that there is a ‘genetic and environmental mix’ that causes restrictive cardiomyopathy?
00:58:46 - Audience question - Do you think that young children with restrictive cardiomyopathy should be genetically tested?
    Takotsubo cardiomyopathy
01:01:16 - What is Takotsubo cardiomyopathy?
01:02:10 - What are the symptoms of Takotsubo?
01:03:12 - How does Takotsubo present?
    01:04:49 - What causes Takotsubo?
01:06:11 - How is Takotsubo diagnosed?
01:09:19 - Why is it mostly women that are affected by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy?
01:10:19 - Audience question - A lot of research has been done on the emotional causes of Takotsubo - especially stress. I feel that it would be useful to understand the physical causes of Takotsubo, especially in cases where stress has not been the cause.
01:12:19 - Audience question - I find that a lot of women who have had Takotsubo are still symptomatic 6-months on from the diagnosis. Is there a connection with microvascular disease or mitral valve issues that may be causing a continuation of symptoms?
01:15:00 - Audience question - When you mention the ‘honeycomb effect’ in relation to LVNC, what do you mean by that?
01:16:17 - Audience question - I had no obvious trigger for my Takotsubo. Why did I get pain across different parts of my body?
01:18:23 - Audience question - Are the trabeculations in LVNC a birth defect?
01:19:14 - Audience question - I have LVNC. I’ve been told to give up a lot of exercise. I’ve spoken to other people with LVNC and they have been given different advice on exercise. Why is that?
01:21:31 - Audience question - I have LVNC. My heart rate usually doesn’t go up to more than 120 - I am able to exercise as long as I keep an eye on what my heart is doing?
