What's causing deforestation in Africa and how to stop it | DW News

- The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to the world’s second largest rainforest. But this rainforest is in danger. Every year, DRC loses half a million hectares of its forest. That's partly because people are cutting down trees to produce charcoal. But there could be a solution to the massive deforestation.
In Tanzania, the extensive deforestation of one island has been turned around. Located in Tanzania's Zanzibar Archipelago, the tiny island of Kokota measures only one square kilometer and is home to several hundred people.
Two decades ago, its trees all but disappeared. But Kokota's forests have now come back from the brink.

Please do a report also on western European people that is planning to cut more trees this winter for substitution of Russian gas.
What do you expect them to do when Russia is bullying Europe again 🙄🤨
@@HShango so dont shame other people for doing the same.
What is causing deforestation in the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine? EU, that ordered Ukraine to legalize the export of raw timber into EU.
That started long before this year!
Not everyone has stack in home. Government already told that first priority is institutional electricity and leftovers goes for regular Joe
Regular Joe = Joe Biden?
The earth microbiome (is the Forrest), reminds me of the human microbiome which is the gut (good bacteria).
Balance is key for sustainable living for all on our planet.

No wonder the strings are pulled by EU in Africa as well.
But obviously they would never admit that
Humans = killers
Nature = victim
This is the problem with 'development'
This is exactly what the developed world did during their years of 'development' (including killing almost 98% of their animals/creatures).
What can Africa do differently when poverty, corruption and governmental failures is extremely rampant?

are you kidding me???
your rich country produce billions more carbon and pollution that poor country. even if they burn all the trees in the their land, your country are still winning at carbon producers (cars, electricity power plants, airplane, plastic waste, cow farm, etc...) a gas powered power plant produce more carbon in a month, than a hectare of threes burned down.
so, you want to live in easy environments where everything is instant, and you want them to live like tarzan?
jea well, the now developed countrys need to share their technologys to fix those problems so africa can skip that part of development
@@Alfalfa88888 there is no technology to share because we have not come up with anything that works yet. Maybe one day
@@mercyln6646 If I had no other way of cooking other than cutting down trees for firewood, I would be cutting down trees for firewood with the best of them.
I really don't think we have any real alternative other than trying to plant more trees than we cut down.
Energy is a major problem on this planet, and there is no real solution to the problem that I can see. The only reason we don't cut down trees in Europe now is we have alternatives but this winter, there will be many more wood burners going due to shortages of gas. We are all just one step away from falling off the bottom rung.
People can plant trees, but they will never be able to restore an ecosystem.
Once a forest is clear cut, we lose the diversity of the forests, and the subterranean species are no longer in balance. Each species of tree has a universe of species that have a symbiotic relationship with the tree. If we just replant trees, we are not replacing what was there before a virgin timber, old growth forest was clear cut.
No , but theoretically if they plant enough trees they won't have to cut the virgin forest any more. But there is still huge logging for the timber industry...
you apparently did not get what they are doing and sell as wisdom what they already know. The managed forests allow not touching the rainforests so much. Thus the goal is to have that as resource while keeping the remaining wilderness alone.-
*People will be kicking themselves in few weeks if they miss the opportunity to buy and invest in crypto as it's retracing.....BE WISE*
I got 80% of my total portfolio in Crypto and it has been great Returns
For real Mr Peter Delgado trading services are really great, I invested $40,000 and cashed out $85,700 on just 3weeks
That sounds like the worst business plan I have seen in a long time.
@@online3010 that sounds like a plan - and you get wood for fire from the unusable parts.
Now you guys need to come up from the lowest live expectancy in the world and the country might have a future.
I find it strange that somehow coal is somehow green 🤨, I know replanting the trees to reabsorb the carbon dioxide emissions helps. Hmmmm it is strange and somehow sits in the grey area of how the Congolese are adapting to get energy and revenue
Mining ancient coal from the ground and burn that will produce a net increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Burning coal from farmed forests that regrows will potentially produce particles in the air that can be harmful, but there should be close to zero net carbon dioxide emissions. Burning ancient and pristine forests will wipe out biodiversity, making many animals and plants that has existed for maybe millions of years extinct forever.
It's not an easy problem to solve.
@@SlimJongUn make a better suggestion, like solar⚡️power on every 🏡 and charcoal as a backup only
You mean charcoal
And deforestation is also being caused by the logging of hardwood for the timber industry - especially by China.
Especially for the consumers of Europe and US.
We need to get clean electricity to these villages for power-hungry things like cooking and refrigeration
No need of rethorical questions in the video title, people are always our planet's biggest problem.

Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger.
Population needs to be in balance with nature and the environment.
we are far past that point I reckon.
nearly 4 million hectares of African forests are being cut down each year
40000000000 m2 or how you calculating it
Save every tree.
Yes
The whole country of DRC uses less electricity and "charcoal" than Frankfurt.
Maybe Frankfurt should replace all their forests.
Germany is increasing the size of their forests.
Wow! It's takes a great man with a great vision to see through.
God continue to bless you more and more man of Tanzania for your good work with the children for their support👏👏👏.
How to stop it? Germany stops with burning BROWN COAL!!!!
See How China efforts in desertification. lessons learnt
Europe has also to spend decades restoring the environment from years of degradation. Its not easy.
@@grahamt5924 I agree the reason I used China were two fold, 1. It was the largest it has desertification the size of Denmark. and 2. it was based on cummunity assistance and China is a developing country thus the synergies with Africa. But learn from all is my take.
@@silafaupaulmeredith7251 Europe was the first to Industrialise and the first to almost wipe out their forests and rivers. It has been a very difficult task to sort out taking many decades and still requires a monstrous amount of work.
@@grahamt5924Thanks for the input
It's time for African governments to cut taxes on Cooking gas and electricity so that People can resort to them on Cooking
They also need money for their treasury, so cutting tax will only be temporary, they need to find sustainable ways for their population to live, prosper and succeed in their lives.
@@HShango true
It won't be stopped any more than it's being stopped in the Amazon. Humans are self-destructive and short-term. That is a fatal combination.

Have they heard of Haiti?? They are going to have the same problem. No trees. Just hot everywhere. Find another source of energy
Why does this video end so abruptly? Why is there no informtion on how to send funds to those replanting forests?
It's sad indeed
@@babblo1389 Do you know of groups needing funding to replant forests? If so please post a link in the comments. I'm all for sharing the info so those planting trees can get the funding they need and more to replant forests everywhere.
It's a good idea. I need to look into this and get back to you at later stage. Either way don't lose hope! And together we can make a difference!
Rich countries should support poor countries... otherwise no solution
EU is in some shape or form, the UK should dip in a little bit and the USA, New Zealand & Australia, Japan as well should contribute plus China.
@@HShango they are only saying... practically doing nothing...100 billion still not invested which they say on 2010
Yes they did this for many years like dracula
Poor countries really stop population growth and make less child. If african countries destroy their forest now, what the future is for an extra 10, 100 million people? Starvation. and just die.
AFRICA IS RICH, AND YOU FOLKS LETTING THEM STEAL RESOURCES TO GET RICH OFF OF YOU. THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE NOT RICH ON THEIR OWN. THEY GOT YOUR DIAMONDS, GOLD, URANIUM AND OTHER RESOURCES.
Using charcoal for cooking also causes C02, which is a radicalism of global warming argument, Claude Lévi-Strauss a French anthropologist said that people became civilized when started cook meals God of fire Prometheus' immortal liver every day eaten by Eagle. You take one big steel mill in China and coal consumption and compare it to all African charcoal consumption for meal preparation and you see that cooking has no impact on Co2 level at all.
And as always, Family Planning is left out of the solution.....
It is hard to think that there are still societies living in such primitive conditions. No electric, no running water, no sewage systems, few paved roads, and diseases that we've only seen in the history books. Poor education and primitive farming tools. How did parts of the world get into such cocoons of lack of progress?
Development is a tricky thing. It depends on the building of institutions conducive to progress. Poor places suffer from a bad political equilibrium, with elites only extracting the most they can.
European and american imperialism and looting. Just search what Belgian did to Congo , they looted.
Still better than depending on others for such basic things, isn't it lol?
Any effort towards addressing sustainability issues will have positive results!!
the people of Africa should stop whining, and start making smart decisions about their future. almost every female gives birth to 6-12 kids there, with no ability, what so ever to provide them with enough food. that's where the west is at fault. instead of letting them deal with the consequence of their decisions, the west is doing its best to support those kids, and the cycle continues.
stop giving them fishes. start teaching them how to fish. otherwise, the situation in Africa will never change
Africa has the lowest deforestation in the world. We should be taking their advise!
What did they have in that stove [SIGIRI] 0:33? There was Charcoal and something else. Just curious.
How many years this charcoal trees could be harvested and how many families buy this in a minimal prices because this is a local production
We need the trees but people have to live!
But if the trees go, the people WON'T live!
@@gamingtonight1526 balance is the answer
Every day the human total population grows with 210 thousand people, and they will all need wood, we need to take fewer children
Why not saving all Rainforests? Thats why the Torys can not Lead!. GER, Bavaria
Didn't Russian gas become cheap, when will they get their fair share?
Good luck getting anything done for conservation in Africa.
Green electricity can replace a charcoal of any forms for the purposes of that people, imho
czechoslovak contrast agents are UR BFF...
The potential advantages of biogas in this context are huge.
The pristine forest will not regrow in multiple life times. This is so unsustainable - I can't
am thinking about small community solar heaters
The solution is simple. Plant more trees than you chop.
Clean coal!

What is China's role in deforestation in Cango?
What is doing Poland right now....
Why don't u show how much effort Ethiopia is puting to plant Billions of trees?
Save those trees
The Chinese, that’s easy.
Give them proper job to earn money. And they will stop destroying forest
But "THEY" arent behind "Destroying Forests" , the OUTSIDE Employers are! ..African been in Africa for 1000's of years! if they were destroying Forests, there would BE NO AFRICAN FOREST by now!🤨🙄 ...Nuff Said!
The worker needs $.
A person needs heat..
A person needs wood.
Replace all 3.
Human methaine septic system. For heat
Each home has one unit like a septic but produces methaine gas for home, or business.
Composite , resin, and earth building construction. Or reclaimed dwellings ...
A different work to pay the bills.. charcoal can be made from human and cow poops...
Look to the old ways and add new technology..
So 9/20 people use charcoal. That's...... We need to put into action making charcoal from other materials such as rice husk
Better still, is tomake charcoal from coconut and other agro-product waste into charcoal.
Good!
We need more of this.
Let the government go into reforestation planting trees to avoid flooding when big typhoon comes, only the government can proclaim regulatory order to the community especially those who are engaged in wood industries
Africa is depressingly hopeless.
@GN28 may be. But my aura has no effect on you or the world. I am not demanding handouts while contributing nothing but crime. Also I am not filling the world with billions of 80 iq.
All foreign aid to poor nations should require that they stop deforestation by their farmers. It won't be easy, but it must be done.
Cocota - a beam of light in dark times of decline
Its simple! Where I live... Every tree is chopped for firewood as far as the eyes can see and beyond
They should plants the fruits trees they have a harvest the fruits
One of the issues here is rampant expansion. This plantation project won't fix all the issues with charcoal cooking. Also, I don't love what's done to the soil when you repeatedly strip it of nutrients like that.
Not a plantation project it is a model for the entire country. I think you missed something very important there. The trees do not strip the soil of nutrients they do the opposite. Yes the smoke is still an issue. Even with better cookers and chimneys in certain weather conditions esp. without wind it can be devastating. And there is also the rising temp. to consider. The benefits are very substantial though: Be able to generate electricity during the production of the charcoal, make the production of the charcoal more efficient in general, help prevent soil degradation, shade from trees means less water evaporation and lower local temperatures, a natural habitat for wildlife.
How does Europeans cook their food? Using solar energy?
I know you're being sarcastic 😶
Europe has no solar energy
@@HShango yep. I just wanted to expose the hypocrisy of DW. How conveniently they blame a nation where people struggle to make a meaningful living, when Europe is almost entirely running on fossil fuels. This is in addition to the historical emissions of developed nations.
This is just how these europeans keep other regions poor. deforestation for food and cooking oil is bad but deforestation for mining goods needed for european industry is good. I live in southeast asia i knew their game.

Just go for nuclear
Population needs to be in balance with jobs, resources, nature and the environment. Having a bigger population in any country than the country can support makes no sense. Access to food, water, shelter, energy and jobs should guide population levels. The worlds population is still expected to add another billion people to feed, clothe and produce pollution. Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Countries need to focus on quality of life for their citizens and not just quantity of life for cheap labor.
The world is doomed, we went over the tipping point, the point of no return
Good luck!
And, while the trees are little, there can be produced several crops between the trees. It helps to maintain original micorhizae, who are generally the best mean to empeach abnormal growth of insect-populations into plagues, to avoid erosion and the washing out of biogenetical mineral salts. Even... there can be thougth to produce other woods , for construction , food, whatever pruposes, as wenge, limbali, ...., supporting vines, as vanilla, peper, fumbwa,.... etc... It is the best way for sustainbale farming with low capital and high qualitiy production on relatively very little farms - a few hectares each -. Maybe sick jobless urbans make more sense for Bill Gates, but not to me....
Solutions not anytime soon.
Solar system would help
Ohh
They can call putin
If we had adopted nuclear energy decades ago, so many more people in the world would have clean, cheap, reliable electricity and we wouldn't have to rely so much on things like charcoal. We also wouldn't be in such bad shape with climate change right now. You can thank radical environmental fundamentalists who killed nuclear energy for that.
