    What do you think? Am I overreacting on the RE20?
    What microphone would you like to see reviewed next in the #StreamerMic series?

    • @dougtaylor7724

      Sennheiser 421 II. Would love to see you review that one. I know a couple of radio people that do their private studio work on the Sennheiser, but their radio studios all use the RE20.
      I actually like the RE20 color. Wish they used a light grey. It shows off the profile and people know you have pro grade equipment.

    I really like how large the shock mount is - it lets the microphone hang from a boom arm while sitting low enough so I can see my side monitor over it and the shock mount itself is so wide that I can see right through it really well. It's so huge and wide that I can see through it without it blocking my vision. It would actually be annoying for my setup if it was any smaller.

    That explanation of why the EQ curve curves where it curves was helpful. Even if that’s not the official narrative on this mic (maybe it is, I don’t know) it must be the reason it is so useful for broadcasting. Thanks for the helpful vid and insights

    Been listening to you on TCP for over two years now and your recent mention of your mic review brought me here. Great content especially for people like me who know little more than the basics. Looking forward to the continuation of this series, especially if you plan to dip down into some of the lower cost ranges.

    Great, informative video! Been a fan of yours since I got my GoXLR while you were working with TC-Helicon. You posted your SM7B video at the exact time when I was considering pulling the trigger on one as an upgrade from my Rode Procaster (which I’ve loved but I feel like gives a little too much “boom” to my voice).
    Now, instead of jumping in to the Shure, I feel compelled to see the other microphones and where you go with this series before making a decision. Looking forward to the rest of these!

      @@KickedTripodYT Looking forward to it! I’ve been leaning towards the SM7B or the RE20 for awhile now, but have always been a bit turned off from the RE20 for the reasons you mentioned (that should mount is just so bulky!).
      I’m definitely not in a rush to get something, though. So I’m looking forward to seeing what other mics you talk about that I may not even be thinking of!

    Biggest downsize to me is the shock mount size. I’m going to be ordering the RE20 in Black, with the shock mount, and with a black version of the same pop filter you use. Just in case, I’ll be getting a windscreen cover for it as well. My goal is to angle this beefy thing in a way that you don’t see the shock mount. Thanks for an excellent review, you did an amazing job. I’m confident now that for my use cases (work, streaming, and discord), this is the GO TO upgrade from a Shure MV7.

    Been trying to minimize mic bleed between my girlfriend and I as we currently share a room. It's mainly only when one or both of us get loud and I know there will always be some if we share a room, just trying to clean it up as much as I can :).
    I have a shure sm7b and she is using a rode podmic. We have sound treatment up and have the rear of the mics toward the other as much as possible while still being mo more than 20-30 degrees off-axis of our mics.
    Do you think 2 RE20's would help? I know they need less gain and have a lower noise floor.

    For the price, the Samson Q2U is really good in IMHO. The Rode Procaster is really nice, specially with off rejection. I would like to play with an RE20, but can I justify buying one?

    • @KickedTripodYT
      @KickedTripodYT  3 роки тому

      The Samson Q2U is fine, but it's really not a fair comparison to compare handhelds to large-diaphragm broadcast dynamic microphones. If you're spending over $50 on a dynamic microphone and it's going to be used with an interface, you'll gain a lot by looking at the entry-level broadcast dynamic microphones like the Rode PodMic or Presonus PD70 (which is often on sale for $99).
      Audio-quality-per-dollar-spent is a dangerous measurement to get used to because you'll end up getting suboptimal solutions just to save a few bucks.

    • @ellisgl
      @ellisgl 3 роки тому

      @@KickedTripodYT I find the PodMic to be tinny in all the reviews I've watched/listened too, but info think the PD70 sounds better than that. I own both the Q2U and a Procaster, yeah the sound nothing a like. I like the low end and smoothness of the Procaster, but I like the overall clarity of the Q2U. The Q2U has good off axis rejection, just not as good as the Procaster. The Q2U is great starter mic, since you don't have to have an interface. A lot of people, like myself start off down the condenser road, only to find out that you need to do a lot more to make everything sound good, mostly acoustic treatment. Definitely not something you want to do, if you are trying to see if streaming / podcasting is right for you.

    • @ellisgl
      @ellisgl 3 роки тому

      @@KickedTripodYT If I run a chain, use VST host with a gate, limiter and sometimes a EQ. Need to work on the EQ profile for each mic. I have a fairly crappy interface and have to use a Klark Technik CT-1 on most of my dynamics. I have a Tascam US-2x2HR on back order.

  • @mrdereksutton
    @mrdereksutton 2 роки тому

    I'm sorry...you're giving the price a D+??? I'm confused. If the value of the microphone didn't justify the price, I would understand, but the price is $450 because it's it's entirely worth what it costs and its a top tier microphone. As far as a diminishing return, I entirely disagree. Maybe if someone is okay with a lesser quality microphone sound, and that's okay and that's their preference but that's very subjective. It's not like Electro Voice decided to mark up a $200 microphone to $450 just because of their name and because they can. It comes down to what someone is willing to spend and someone's budget. Just because someone is only willing to spend $200 on a mic because it's only a hobby for them doesn't mean that the Re20 is any less valuable. I'd recommend leaving personal feelings of price out of your reviews if you can't look at a price objectively.

    • @KickedTripodYT
      @KickedTripodYT  2 роки тому

      So, you've drawn some false equivalences in your comments that are making it challenging to respond to. My report card based on price is purely based on the value you get from a $450 microphone as far as what it gets you in terms of audio quality and viewership. This is a streamer microphone review after all. This has been proven time and time again across the major microphone review channels that the value of a $450 microphone for streaming has steep diminishing returns. You may not like the conclusion, but there is definitely no personal feelings outside the fact that I can give you two side-by-side recordings of a $200 and a $450 microphone through a GoXLR to a stream and you wont be able to tell the difference-let alone be able to justify the 2.25x cost.
      I love the RE-20. It's my favorite microphone to use and I recommend it to everyone who can afford it. But is it priced well for a streamer? Absolutely not.
      Also, ironically, we know the BOM cost of an RE-20 is ~$100 in materials, so even at 100% margins (about 75% if you account for shipping and packaging), the RE-20 *could* cost $200.

    • @mrdereksutton
      @mrdereksutton 2 роки тому

      @@KickedTripodYT "Priced well for a streamer" is still highly subjective. One person may not care about the sound quality, meanwhile another person could prefer the highest quality sound. If someone wants the quality of the Re20 I would recommend them to save for it rather than to buy something cheap and then have to upgrade later.
      And since when do we take the cost of materials of an item into account for what a business sells the item for? If someone wants to buy the cheapest setup possible then they certainly have the right, but it won't be comparable to a professional setup.
      All in all, it looks like your channel is died shortly after this video so I'm not sure why you bothered replying either way.

    • @KickedTripodYT
      @KickedTripodYT  2 роки тому +1
