This was really helpful, Stephen! My understanding of existentialism was mostly through existentialist themes in movies, like the Iron Giant. The Iron Giant struggles between his identity as a weapon vs. a hero, and learns by the end to identify himself with his choices to save others rather than any prior “essence”. You’re video definitely showed me that my understanding of existentialism wasn’t incorrect, just perhaps a little simplistic (which movies tend to do with philosophy). Thank you for the concise explanation to help me understand it better, keep up the great work!

And I just recently learned it was based on a story written by Ted Hughes to comfort his children after their mother (Sylvia Plath) committed suicide. It's a beautiful story, especially with that context in mind!
