I saw them may times in the seventies before they got popular in UK. We were really very lucky as if they had got the true wealth they deserved they would have been adopted by the Americans and be off touring in huge stadiums across the Americas, so we wouldn't be able to see them in small venues in UK.

God I love Budgie. How they never went stratospheric is hard to fathom. When you compare this version to the Metallica cover, for example, this is just so pure and raw. Also, has there ever been a band with a cooler logo than the bandolier!

*The old grey whistle test* was a weekly programme on BBC2 started late 60s early 70s went on for 25/30 years. It was for a long time the only programme on British television where you could see live performances of modern music (pop, blues, rock, etc.)
The name is supposed to come from an EMI executive who said that if the caretakers and cleaners (older people, generally, with grey hair) were heard whistling the songs they heard coming from the recording studios, then that song was gonna be a hit. It had passed the 'old' 'grey' 'whistle test'.

The best band ever to come out of Cardiff. Burke Shelley and Tony Bourge deserve so much respect. I saw them back in 1977 in Wolverhampton… my ears are still ringing. The OGWT is almost as missed as Budgie. Budgie recorded a number of their albums at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth (in the middle of the Welsh countryside) and interestingly Rush also chose to record ‘A Farewell to Kings’ in the same studio.

Saw them live many times in the 70's. Wow, it's rare to see someone react to Budgie. A truly under-appreciated band these days. My favourite songs by them are "Parents", "In the Grip of a Tyre-fitters Hand" and "Sky-High Percentage". I consider their 1973 album "Never Turn Your Back on a Friend" a classic. It sits on the cusp of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. As such it's hard to argue it truly deserves a place in the annuls of either. Perhaps that is Budgie's problem. Never-the-less it should get much more attention than it does.

Love this video, and I have a little story if that's ok. In 1994 I moved to Cardiff and started college as a mature student at Coleg Glan Hafren in the Rumney area of the city. Lovely bunch of similar minded 'mature' people - I was 22 - on the course, which if successfully passed would give you an Access to Humanities diploma - and a passport to university. One of my fellow students was a quiet but very friendly fella who stood out only because of his oversized (sorry Burke :) glasses, and because he drove a cool VW camper van. I then started seeing him around my neighbourhood a lot, as he lived just around the corner in Roath. A mate I got to know on the course informed that that was Burke Shelley, who was 'big in Budgie' a few years back. I'd never heard of him, or Budgie to be honest. I guess it was a bit before my time. As I recall, he went off to do a degree at the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd, but I moved away and as we weren't close friends we never kept in touch. After watching this video I googled him and it turns out that a few years ago he survived an aneurysm, and now has a long-term, life-threatening illness. Wishing you well Burke, wherever you are.

Fantastic choice - Well done, and thanks K'n'R. Budgie is one of my all time favourites. Soooo good. I love your term "Well diggers" - this is so true for Budgie. Also, I urge folk to check out their album covers - the artwork is spectacular: Bandolier, Never Turn you Back on a Friend, If I were Britannia I'd waive the rules, etc - All brilliant music, productions, artworks.
Lastly, did you notice that one of the lyrics in that 2nd song "Who do you want for your love" is "Never turn your back on a friend"?
    Thanks Rich. Thanks Kel xx.

Luv luv the 70's..(10 yo-19yo)my favorite music era. 80's we're also awesome. I Love spending music time w/u guys & ty for spending time w/me. These 2 songs were a 1st for me too. Luv the change ups & rifs esp in the 2nd one..which I liked best.
Music is my everything..can't imagine life w/o all the melodic story telling I've been exposed to since the 60's actually. Grew up listening to my Daddy pick & sing. He used to have jam sessions w/his friends .. wonderful memoirs. He's now 85 & can't play any longer due to RA. Out of all the things he cant do any longer..he misses playing guitar the most. So y'all sharing music w/me here kinda links old memories for me. I'm so happy I found ur site & consider u 2 my framily. As always..luv ur reactions.. live vids..history..just all of it in a nut shell. Rock On!! Kel keep on cooking..can't wait to see what Chef KnR serves up next😉 Much Love Mona❣️🎤🎸🎹🎷🎧🎙️🥁🎻🎺

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a B.B.C. t.v. Show dedicated to underground rock music from around 1971- 85. It was where you went to find the stuff radio wasn't playing.

Lee your so right. But as I comment above, think of he competition at the time: Sab, Zep, Purple, Lizzy, Scorpions, Quo and so many more. It's hard to flourish in the shadows, but talent will find it's voice.

I've absolutely loved this band from way back. One of the best, most underrated bands ever. They were still going great guns until Burke Shelley had a serious aneurism about 10 years ago.Their website lists them as being active still, but on hiatus.I can't find out any more info,i so hope they'll make another comeback.Any info from anyone will be great.

He finds it diffcult to play bass and sing at the same time - it feels sore and uncomfortable to him - but he wouldn't mind sharing twin lead singing duties - him singing one song and the other guy (if they got one) singing the other song and varying it from there. That's as far as I know, mate.

British TV BBC - OGWT (Old Grey Whistle Test) The Old Greys were the doormen outside the recording/radio studios who wore grey coats(uniforms). They would play new tunes to these guys and then test if they could whistle the tune back. Hence whistle test. If they could repeat the tune it would be a hit.
