Busted! Now the truth comes spilling out: The first two chords after the solo are wrong. I almost stopped but I liked the take pretty well to that point so I jumped back on the right chords. That same progression happens two more times so I got a chance to redeem myself a little. Oh the perils of live performance! I'm glad I got that off my chest.

1970 or 71. I was 15, a sophomore in high school...at my buddy Rex's, where I heard a number of things for the first time. Tarkus was strange and wonderful. Somewhere during the B side I got a feeling I'll never forget: I felt like I was related to Keith Emerson somehow...like we had a common ancestor in Ireland or something...even though I was way out in Calif. in the middle of the desert. I became kinda like the guy in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind: I had to reproduce this thing..

I get it. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard "song for america" for the first time on the radio (written by a different Kerry). it was life changing. Something in the ungodly chord progression and subsequent tension resolution connected with me on an atomic level. Can't explain it.

I never missed an ELP tour. Saw them about 70 times. It was always Yes and ELP for me. Saw Yes about 90 times. You are an amazing player. Dream Theater, anyone?

I'm almost overwhelmed. This magnificent performance has reminded me of why Emerson was my musical hero back in the seventies. The combination of technical mastery with sheer musicality remains awe-inspiring and your rendition is as good as I'll ever hear, I suspect.
    You have inspired me!

Got my first set 4 years ago. My feet were pretty much beginners but they're coming along. Having sequenced all the drum parts for my videos I've studied Carl pretty thoroughly. Most of his stuff is not complicated beyond the basic rhythms of the music (which admittedly can be a little tricky) it's just well placed and executed. That's where years of pounding it out at gigs comes in handy. Kinda wish I'd started 30 years ago.

I suspect he still has the GX1. I read just a few days ago that he sampled some sounds from it for his new album. The Works album was certainly a whole new sound. Remember that the sounds that we came to love were about all that was available at the time. Keith was apparently very happy to have something completely new sounding. I think most of us were expecting another BSS...and probably still are. And why not? The planets must have been all lined up for that one. But life goes on.

Side note: brilliant rendition. Well done on every aspect.
Soo... I read an old story that keith bought a broken GX-1 from maybe John Paul Jones? when a tractor drove through the wall of his barn and bashed the hell out of his GX1? or maybe it involved Benny Anderson. it was a small, exclusive club. I'm so sad keith is gone. It's just wrong he left that way.

Kerry must be one the greatest musicians out there. Alright, I love ELP, but the skill level on display here is beyond mind-boggling.
There’s something more to it though, for me, he gets the spirit of the music just right and achieves an urgency and sheer musical quality that goes beyond just the almighty ability.

this was the song I interpreted for Keith when I was a young boy. I was in music school and I created this with piano and organ and moog I wrote him and included a tape I said I could copy you but you heard it already. Keith met me and he said I was right what is the use of copying. It was many years later Keith told me he was so ego driven to tell me at the time but I had a Ginastera moment, I said when he heard his piece interpreted by you he congratulated you? So you buying me lasagna was your way of saying that? LOL. Kerry you are good and you obviously put a lot of effort in this and I hope you see this I know some time has passed and you are very prolific and so was I. If something ever happened don't follow Keith's end. I had a stroke and lost a good piece of my left hand and Keith always admired me for it. I know at 59 I can make do because that's rock and roll

(continuing)...but, I never have given up the hope of meeting someone who can play the Emerson stuff with such precision such, as you. I play all of Carl's stuff note for note. That has been the ultimate challenge and what kept me on my toes, and why I constructed the replica of his 70's drum percussion set up.One day,I hope to be able to meet someones expectations as a drummer/percussionist who can play ELP as well as they expect. I only hope they are as gifted as you are, Kerry.

Dude! You are THE MAN! You have Tull and ELP nailed! I saw ELP in Anaheim in 73 or 74, right before Cal Jam. I also saw Tull at the LA Forum in 75 or 76. It's been awhile, so kinda hard to remember exactly which years. Great shows. They've been 2 of my favorite bands since then. Something tells me you can probably hammer out some early Genesis and Yes as well. How about Triumvirat or Trace? I'd love to hear it!
Anyway, you performances are very inspirational. I gotta go practice:>)
    Thanx Man!

Excellent!I sure hope he still has it.I remember reading an interview with Keith a few years back and he said the GX1 was damaged in a fire in his barn.Hope he was able to salvage it-it is a phenominal machine. You do bring up a GREAT point.Keith was probably pleased as punch to have a machine with a completely new sound.(And he didnt have to throw around a 350 pound organ to get some wild sounds-easier on the back.)I was hoping for another BSS,also-hell,ive been waiting for that since 1975!!!

Excellent Kerry! Not too many of us can play thru the full song. Every time I hear someone else do it I hear chords or a few notes I'm not perfect on. It wasn't in print when I learned it by ear.
Again excellent excellent! And good programming.
For one of my senior engineering projects I built a Moog sequencer clone, just to do 3rd Empression. I used 2 Mini's in the 70's, and of course a B. Hauled a Yamaha grand around to. ( I'm too old now to haul that weight around )
I had a perfect Greg Lake vocalist for a few years , and a Carl Palmer drummer too.. We had a great time pulling ELP off live. Lost the drummer to Steve Morse, and the singers somewhere around Nashville.

Thanks, Yeah they lowered parts of the 1st and 3rd impressions, no doubt so Greg wouldn't have to strain for the whole tour. I use those keys in case I ever have a singer with the same problem. I also take liberty with a few of the licks as does Keith. I've worked hard to capture the sounds of the day. Without the actual gear I can't nail everything but I'm close.

  • @kshacklett

I think that was Pat Moraz's band. Another great player, but like Wakeman (and everyone else) he didn't have the magic in his composing as Keith. In my opinion the person that got closest to Keith in musical impact was Eddie Jobson, but as Greg Lake said, it's art; one person will cry over it and the next person will piss on it.

    Kerry,
I love the solo so much so that I would rather listen to you play it than listen to Keith play it. I have always been in love with those chords played with the left hand which, Keith--for some reason-- always cut out of the live performances of this tune, except here and there. The steady playing adds so much, and whatever the setting is that have you on the lower keyboard is awesome.

  • @rodblackwood

So you came in on Tarkus,eh?What a wonderfully complex, intricate piece of music Keith created(with a little help from his friends)Kinda liked the B side myself-"Infinite Space/A time and a place"my favs.I came in on BSS-what an introduction!Vowed to hear every note Emerson played before AND after that.

As a massive Keith fan i love watching you. i was late to ELP by age. i was only 10 in 1973 and so missed the fuss and only came by them in 1978 by chance after seeing the Old Grey Whistle Test Special and i was hooked. Had to wait until 1992 to see them at the Royal Albert Hall. in 2003 i saw Keith with The Nice on the tour and was lucky to shake his hand. finally i saw him at The Barbican London in 2015. i play guitar but never managed piano and so it always fascinates me to see someone like you being to master Keith's pieces. i hope you will ot mind i have posted your links on several ELP Facebook groups.

I love that solo too. But I can appreciate Keith playing whatever he feels like playing, being as resourceful as he is. Since you obviously are an ELP "historian" you probably noticed that I improvised my own licks in the next section, while trying to maintain the style. I hope both of us get our chance to play ELP with real musicians.

I would like to add that it is a pleasure to get to see/hear the Hammond solo actually played (at 4:30-5:09)the way it appears on the Brain Salad Surgery(BSS) album, since Keith didn't play the solo he recorded on the BSS album, during the California Jam. Actually,I like the way you play it much better than the way Keith plays it on the "Welcome Back my friends..." album, because you used the left hand more then Keith did on the lower keyboard, making it sound closer to the sound on BSS!

Thanks, I hate to break this to you but not only did I learn it by ear, I learned it from an LP 30+ years ago. I got to where I could drop the needle on the exact groove I wanted about half of the time. bowserb61 turned me on to the "Piano Bench" recently and I've studied a few pages of Brent Wood's. I disagree with a few things but have also found stuff that sounds more "correct" than mine. What a great resource for ELP students, including me!
