- Finally got behind the wheel of the new GTI, gotta say its definitely a sharper tool than before. I reckon a Stage 1 with a set of Michelins is more the car than you'd ever need. Maybe I need one now lol.

Finally got to drive one of these, impressive for a ‘standard’ GTI. Wonder what the new Clubsport is like!

I keep a loaded rifle in the trunk and a loaded Glock within reach in the cabin of my VW MK7. Using your GTI as a weapon would just cause to much damage, just carry a pistol and your good to go.
That 2ltr is getting boring at least put a 2.5 in the R

That is exactly why I would rather have the mk 7.5 interior bc it's not as hard to change driving modes
It’s not that bad in reality I have an 8 and love it
There is a physical button under the display to get to the driving mode menu...
Stingy VW replaced Bonnet gas strut with a cheap rod to save a few pence😀😀😀😀

The interior might be two generation ahead, but the prop rod of the bonnet is five generations backward.
how often do you actually lift the bonnet though, not a big deal for most tbh.
@@Umar_1994_ I can do without any rod at all, but it's all about the feel, the look, you know, maybe you don't understand.
I disagree with the two generations ahead for the interior. This buttonless design crap has been going on for the past 10 years. Most automotive manufactures who used capacitive touch buttons have gone back to physical buttons (Honda and Ford come to mind). The only thing that is really "two generations" ahead is the digital cluster.
Owned a mK7.5 GTI pp - all I’m saying is the 245bhp was a very healthy 245bhp. Really well optimised for the diff too. They are quick cars and really well set up for U.K. roads. The new Mk8 seems like marmite ..but I bet it goes down the road well

Great review, slowly starting to grow on me the looks but interior materials look like a step backward, iffy plastics. Also too much touch screen buttons, I feel in some areas VW has tried to cut costs, definitely need the upgrade alloys to make it look better over the horrid standard alloys
Ahh man looks usually grow on us but I can't see the new front end of golfs growing on anyone....such a shame
I liked the font end end more than the back. I think they did an awful job on the back

The designer's love to over design,less is more,the boot lid comes out to much then goes in at a angle,should have rounded the back a bit more.nicer to the eye,i suppose the front could grow on you.but the rear design is a let down.

its great, but starts at 48,000 Euros, which is a bit much for a golf
@@gamm8939 it's not jus a golf, it's a gti, normal mk 8 golf's u can get for 30k-ish one of the problems with the old golf 7.5 was the fact it was bare on the inside, not much tech like memory seats ambient lighting etc, this one has all that I think so makes sense on the price bump
Emil Manoj the mk8 Golf R costs 48,000 euros where I live, and of course it is not just a golf, but considering I could get a A4 Avant it doesn’t really seem worth it

@@gamm8939 correct me if I'm wrong but normal a4's jus a diesel engine not rly performance oriented unless u get an rs4 or sumthin but they'd be worth alot more unless u buy older models , hell the 8R costs about 62k euro here and I'm from ireland

Been trying to find a dealership that will lend me one of these to compare to my 2020 Cupra, I'm too small fry at the moment lol. I love the character of these FWD hot hatches.

Shouldn't cars just be intuitive and you should be able to jump into straight away and not "worry" about how to work the button-less "buttons"?

That touch volume thing will become annoying over time. A turntable knob has always worked

@Bryce Czirr 8 is in my opinion rather hideous and the interior is too smartphone-y. The 7 (and then the 7.5) was an excellent replacement to the 6, even back then...the only thing that took time getting used to was the change in them tail lights as I loved the mk6 tail lights. However, this change has a lot of shittiness to it.
@Bryce Czirr No but all these new cars looks pretty damn shit but there are examples where they do look better in my opinion. The newer RS4s and RS6s look even better than the already fantastic looking older models....
@Bryce Czirr no way in hell does the new supra look better. But hey, ur opinion... Like even the new BMW grilles look horrible and altho they are starting to grow on me and looking acceptable, the older gen looks far better (tbf the m340i looks gorgeous and is definitly up there with the f80 shapes). The golf may become acceptable in due time like the bimma, but it's still not a very nice thing to look at.
@Bryce Czirr meh. The outgoing m4 looks a fair bit better than the e92 but not the new one. The rest of the car perhaps but that horrible grille really ruins it. Only in black does that car look good.
@tr hamza try test driving a bmw 125i lci a bit of newer ones and see what its like compared to other hot hatches i feel like its a bit underrated

Version and the self driving features is the best thing about it. It makes driving effort less

Not a fan of the basic one to be honest. Clubsport rear looks awesome as does the R! Front end is a weird one for me, I think without the middle light bar would be better I think. Will have to see what it’s like in the flesh!

My problem with the design is that the front is too aggressive for the side. It just doesn't fit but I guess you could fix that with a sideskirt
Nice real life review as always. Just ordered one and pretty excited as I wanted an all rounder that my wife won't be intimidated to drive and I can chuck the dogs in the back but still have a bit of fun with.
Nice cars and the GTi must be the only way to get a manual so it’s the way to go.

Forget about buttons people. I always remember trying to buy a phone with buttons about 10 years ago and I had to live with no button's. But I haven't looked back 👍
Issue is, you look at a phone while using it. While driving you don't want to be looking at the buttons to know what you're pressing and if you even pressed it etc, distracts you from driving.
Boring auto, I have 6 spd MK8, what a waste.
Great review, thank you Hamza! I appreciate you not being overly negative and ripping on it left and right like some reviewers. It is good to keep an open mind - looks tend to grow on people, and while unusual that button-less interior I imagine would really pop and impress people that first step into it.
PS: I'm jealous you get to drive on those beautiful backroads there in the U.K. :)

In canada i have a 2018 Golf R top spec, and below freezingmy dash buzzes from the soundikator,...wverything is cold and when materials are cold we all k ow they shrink this thebuzzing. In summer its perfect.this is a problem.

Everything's clean Abit too clean. I miss the buttons and center console in the mk7.
They are cutting corners. No more hood struts. Steering wheel buttons look cheap.

Considering they start from over 30k, for a performance car i would expect to get 19 inch wheels as standard. It's a nice car but there's much better for much cheaper.

So the only way to change gear manually is by the steering wheel paddle shifters or can you nudge the gear sellector?

Thanks, enjoyed the vid very much! I bought a one last week (had a 7.5 before...no complaints with that, just needed to change). Never had an auto box before, but must admit, I love it. As I live in the Lake District, the roads are pretty shite, but there are many back roads where you can wellie a car a bit and hurt no one!
