Mr. Robin Shaw, in my country, the last name is not the family name, but it's still the person's name. Is it okay if we use the tittles which is followed by the first name, especially for "ms"?
Keep watching. I hope to teach you well.
I became ordained online so now I can add Reverend to the beginning of my name. But, I would rather not use Reverend because it sounds to formal to me. Is it illegal for me to not use the title on documents or is it just optional.
I think optional
Is there any name of English that has 3 or 4 word, sir? How should we use the title?
nice
Hi brother
Good
Welcome❤️
It kinda hit me when I found out that I am no longer called Miss because I am over 20...
thats only formal, most people who are polite will still call you miss nomatter how old , because its more polite ,
Hello Robin shaw
Welcome to the channel.
so Mrs. is coming from which word? as I dont hear there any 'R"?
no 'r' sound
Greeting from south korea. is it okay to say “Excuse me ms.” to get attention from strangers who are women? and i often heard from my american professor “ms ~~ first name”. is it a way to call out someone friendly?
You are a little confused.
There are 2 kinds of miss.
1. Miss - Title - Miss Smith.
2. miss - just a young girl - "Excuse me, miss."
Ms. is pronounced [mizz]. That is not miss.
are you from canada?
Yes, I am. -Robin
Dear Sir,
I was wondering if I might dare to ask you a question? Let me explain presently: May I say excuse me, lady or M'lady or My lady instead of Miss ? Thank you kindly. Yours faithfully. A
Lady may seem rude.
M'lady is very old English.
I suggest you don't say "Lady" or "M'lady"
Mister rimes with sister and water rimes with daughter and brother rimes with mother
can I say dear Mr. Robinson Shaw
i don't think you can add Dear and Mr together before a name
Sir where do u master
I am constantly surprised how the modern British world still address women by "Mrs" and men by "Mr" by default in many places! esp in DIY shops. Women often get asked "Miss or Mrs?" when being taken basic details, which is effectively intrusive but I don't mind so much, but calling a woman "Mrs" by default regardless of whether they know their marital status is another thing! It is old-fashioned considering "Ms" was introduced in the 1960s.. everyone should be familiar with it by now. It looks like "Mx" will have a long way to go, hopefully not as long as "Ms" does which the modern British world still seems to be struggling with after 50 years.. Worryingly, the people are often offended when being corrected.
can i use madam
Yes you can
Can I use 'Sir' with name?
Or Madam with name?
Yes
Is it better to use ms. Instead of ma'am ? What if I called someone ma'am but later I will now that she just look as ma'am ?🤔
Ma'am today is offensive apparently because most women feel old.
Excuse me sir , what about young male people who don't have a title ?
Sometimes our students need to fill an application form and they don't fill the title items correctly .
All me, young and old, are MR.
@@ShawEnglishOnline
Thank you very much for your help .
How u know if they single or married?
In Western countries, maybe check for a ring on their left hand "ring" finger.
Are you Robin, the owner of
the channel?
Yes, I am Robin Shaw. Welcome to Shaw English.
What is the point of these titles? Why does it matter
To show respect
Show respect
ive been called madam by a shop person and I hate it I think its very rude,
Why in today’s world are businesses, telemarketers, doctors offices, etc calling people by their first names when they have not met before and are not friends?
I’m finding this a lot in todays society and I always correct the person because this is wrong
Strangers should use titles like Mr. and Ms.
Formal titles! I have seen such english lessons.always about 'Mr,Mrs,Miss,Ms,Dr,Rev,Prof'! Obviously ,people who can listen to your english at least know about such titles, trust me! What about 'my excellency, your highness, your majesty '? Arent they formal titles? So boring! I'm sure that people who can listen to a native speaker like this need not such basic vocubulary. Improve ! This is just my suggestion!
There are a lot of students who do not know basic titles. You may be at a higher level and of course desire a more advanced level of English lessons. Most people will never use "excellency, your highness, your majesty" so we don't focus on them.
Trust me, even pre middle school students know basic titles because these titles are very commonly used in english movies.Non-native Kids use these titles when they play with each other occasionally. But when we try to read news papers and some english interviews, suddenly we got stuck! With all respect, I would point out that if one is able to understand what you are saying by listening, it is actually very obvious that they no longer need to learn basic titles.I mean not just your videos, I have seen many english video lessons but, the one thing they all lack is the idea that if we non-native can comprehend their videos by using own ears,we no longer need to learn such basic things because we are already past that level, otherwise, it would be a real waste of time for both of you and us.
@@tinmaunghla648 Trust me as an English educator for 20 years - not all ESL students know these.
I m also very aware of people around and that's what I ve found out. It's ok if you don't believe.I am just presenting my suggestion for the sake of not just learners but for the sake of educators as well because we are all involved in this.We need educators who are aware of what we really need, if not, sorry to say , merely a waste of time and Time is precious. We can't spend a lifetime learning a language. We have to do more than this.
Now, Mx is used for Transgenders
Well, the video was made in 2013. I guess I will need to an update for those who travel to America. But for international English, the titles are still the same.
@@ShawEnglishOnline team, I am from India. We use Mx for transgenders because transgender is now considered as a third gender in India.
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
