Oregon Coast Trail FKT: Neskowin to South Beach

- In August of 2024 I attempted to set the first Fastest Known Time (FKT) of an unsupported woman on the Oregon Coast Trail. While this would be my first ever speed record attempt, it was a somewhat casual endeavor in the sense that there was no current record for unsupported so I just needed to go at a pace I could manage from beginning to end. That said, if I needed to seek external support for gear, food, etc, starting out unsupported would afford me the opportunity to pivot and transition into setting a new self supported women’s FKT, which has been held by Lucia Powell since 2018 with a time of just over 13 days. Outside of thru hiking, I have zero background in endurance sports so I’m not quite sure what business I had trying to see if I had it in me to break into the FKT community, nevertheless in the pursuit of an unsupported attempt, but I’ve experienced a building, persistent attraction since learning about this type 2 (type 3?) fun. Part of it is definitely the women who’ve come before me: the Ashly Winchesters, the Ivey Smiths, the Tara Dowers, the Liz Derstines, the Nika Meyers, of course the Jennifer Pharr Davises and Heather Andersons, and many others. Their wild undertakings have stoked a fire and inspired me to test my determination, grit and strength by pushing beyond my comfort zone in my favorite style, traveling solo. These women have shown me that you are enough and so much more capable than you give yourself credit for, all of which can be discovered in the pursuit of a challenge like an FKT. As they say, you’ll never know if you never try.
I’m still partnered up with @HyperliteMountainGear as an ambassador so if you want to take advantage of 15% off your order, use “BECCA15” at checkout! They have a lot of great new gear, like the Unbound 40L pack I brought on the AT and OCT, and also the Aero, their newly released 28L fast pack for those who want to go further and lighter.
Shout out to Bonnie Henderson who has done a wonderful job documenting this trail in her book "Hiking the Oregon Coast Trail." She makes regular updates about detours, campgrounds, river crossings, and trail conditions on her blog. She responds to emails while you are on the trail to keep things updated.
The seagull dispute was a young bird (brown), harassing an adult (white/black) for food. Lovely vid, as usual!

Having lived in Oregon most of my life, I enjoy seeing all those familiar sights through your eyes.
Lovely day. Ouch for your feet with the rash. Thanks for sharing.
My grandparents live in Siletz! Every time we visited we would go to the Newport board walk and go to the punchbowl and Yaquina head light house. It's absolutely beautiful up there!
Hey Skittle. Great to see you back on a trail. We met at Trail Days in 2023. Take care!
Love all your content
Thanks for the share Becca! Could use some fresh cool ocean air here in Texas! Saddle up!

walking highway 101 can definitely be very trying. I am reliving all these places I have walked through your videos. I'm looking forward to seeing the section between Hobbit Beach trailhead south to Florence, as that is my next section of walking the coast to come next month hopefully.
