The journey of legong as a performing art has been quite long and has formed regional styles like today. Although there is no definite source, a number of dance observers believe that legong originates from Ketewel Village, a small village in Sukawati, Gianyar Regency, Bali.
According to I Wayan Dibia, a dance observer from the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar, the Legong dance which has now developed into the palace Legong began as a sacred ritual dance at Pura Payogan Agung, a temple in Ketewel Village. The form of Legong dance from Ketewel Village is very different from the current Legong.
The Legong dance from Ketewel is usually called the masked Legong dance, because the dancers are required to wear a mask supported by their teeth. In contrast to the palace Legong dance which is now known as graceful, energetic, but punchy, the masked Legong dance movements are far from impressive.
The movements of the masked legong dancers are very graceful, calm, without anything fast. Everything is rhythmically regular. "Because the play is about angels, yes, the dance depicts the movements of angels in heaven," said Jero Mangku Ketut Widia, regent or Hindu priest at Payogan Agung Temple.
Mangku Widia added that the emergence of the masked legong began with a knight at Puri Sukawati named I Dewa Agung Anom Karna. He got the idea while meditating at the Payogan Agung Ketewel Temple. The knight reportedly received orders from Hyang Pasupati to create a dance with existing mask characters.
Indeed, long before Dewa Agung Anom Karna meditated, a number of angel masks were stored at Payogan Agung Temple. The mask, which is hundreds of years old, is thought to have been made by Ki Lampor from the Daha Kingdom, Kediri, East Java. Lontar Raja Purana found at Payogan Agung Temple revealed that the masks were presented by the King of Kediri during the guardian dance on Mount Semeru.
After the offerings, the masks were brought to Bali and placed at Payogan Agung Temple. It is not clear when the masks arrived in Bali, but it is thought to have been hundreds of years ago. Based on this idea, with the help of the people, Dewa Agung Anom Karna created the Tri Ratu Dari.
This dance, which was composed complete with the Semara Pegulingan percussion as accompaniment, is thought to have existed in 1811. This dance is what is known as Legong Mask. The name "legong" is thought to come from the Balinese root words leg which means flexible and elastic movement and gong which means gamelan.
