Yes, 12 yards each color to make 36”-38” lei. I write a little bit more just in case you want to make a little bit longer or to make a bow. Thank you for watching. Let me know if you need more help, ok. Thank you for watching 🌸🌺
Hello I want to make one for my son graduation next year. I'm trying to buy a wholesale ribbon place. But the size they have is 15mm, 20mm n 25mm. Can I use any of these size or does it have to be 22mm
Yes, of course you can use them. If you choose smaller ribbon, the lei will be less wide. I will choose 25mm. Thank you for watching. If you have instagram, please share your lei later and tag me #momslittlethings. I love to see how people's leis turn out 😉🌸🌼
In this video I used both 7/8". You can also use both 5/8", but the lei will be thinner or smaller. You can also combine 5/8" and 7/8", and it's beautiful. You can see in my video below, in the green section I combined 5/8" and 7/8". ua-cam.com/video/FWZWw70WVco/v-deo.html Thank you so much.
Usually I use 1.5 times the length that I want. And times 2 again, because we fold the thread. Please watch my video 'how to get started...' ua-cam.com/video/sxBdP_fH99Y/v-deo.html Thank you for watching.
Mine isn't turning properly. Doesn't look good. I keep watching the part where you are encouraging it to twist, but mine just doesn't look that way. Any clues? Mahalo!
Usually with this lei, first thing is we have to do running stitches (up/down) every 1cm or 1/2", if we are not used to, it's better to measure the ribbon and put a dot every 1/2" for example. If the distance varied, usually it doesn't come out as nice. Second, when we push down, make sure we make the same movement. Down and to the right side. Keep this direction. If you push down to the left, keep this direction. I hope you can do this. But, please don't worry, your lei will be beautiful anyway!! Love from me.
@@momslittlethings8910 Mahalo for your reply, and so quickly! That may be a problem. I was just doing a running stitch, not noticing whether it was even. Sounds like I have to start over. I'm in Colorado, so nobody close who could show me. I was amazed at how easy you made it look to hold the pieces together and still stitch. I think I need a third hand to do it well. 😊 I don't think I'm clear on what you mean about going down to left or right. Do you have that in a video somewhere? Some of us need remedial tutoring. 😄 I so appreciate your help! I've made lots of the standard ribbon leis and wanted to do something a little different for an indigenous friend of mine in New Mexico, where I am right now. If you're ever in New Mexico after Rona goes away, I'd like to introduce you to some of my friends and watch their dances. They live Aloha with different words and traditions. Again, Mahalo! Hope you have a fine Monday.
@@momslittlethings8910 I meant to mention....I was watching your video on the peach lei, with all the little pieces. It looks like the Japanese kanzachi (sp?). @@auntiebobbolink You are so sweet!! you called it 'Rona', 😉 it sounds pretty 😘. I mean after you stitch several stitches, then you push the ribbons, it will spiral itself. It depends how you hold the ribbon, if it spirals to the right, keep it spirals to the right side. Mine usually goes to the right side. I hope this helps. I want to let you know, if you didn't stitch even length, usually it becomes carnations, or if you put long stamen in the middle it can becomes hibiscus. Wow... you can make 3 flowers already 😘😘.

So beautiful, thank you! Is it fine to machine sew the single thread that binds them together? Or does that not work with how it had to be gathered to make it coil around?
I never tried to sew both ribbons together with a sewing machine. For this lei I manually sew them by h and. The 1 cm/0.5" distance makes it coil around, when you push the ribbons down. Let me know if you tried to sew it with sewing machine, ok. I'll try later after graduation season 😉. Thank you for the idea 😉🌼
@@asaelee86 hi Alison, I didn't try it. I couldn't find a sewing machine with thread length that long between each stitch, nor a hack to make it work by changing out the needle type with what's currently available on the market.
@@reginagibson3847 I have a sewing machine now, as of a few days ago, that can sew 30mm long stitches maximum. It may be worth trying!! thanks for commenting when you did, this is serendipitous!
It doesn't really matter. I started with just regular thread and regular sewing needle, too. After making few leis I realized that stronger thread (for upholstery/heavy duty) is better, so it can hold the lei better. And longer needle is better, so easier to hold the ribbons while making the lei.

How many yards do I need to make this for graduation on a 5'1 girl??? The ribbon I bought says 18ft or could it be 1.8 ft I only know it's a spool.
If it's 18ft, you need 2 spools each color. It'll be enough for 5'1" girl.
