I wish we had high public trust again. Now there are too many druggies and messed up people. I can barely relax going out most the time. I know I'm not the weird one when I see videos like this. We live in a sick society. It was fun while it lasted I guess.
Priceless footage for sure. A lost generation in terms of their fashion, entertainment, and attitude. Even the cars looked so vintage & yesteryear compared to modern vehicles; it's a trip just seeing those models fill up the roads. The sad part is, our own generation of video games & internet will seem so archaic, if not obsolete, after a hundred years or so (provided technology keeps advancing). Truly, where the hell does the time go?
I've read A Tree Grows In Brooklyn many times in my life and never before seen a bona fide illustration of some of the sights/experiences the author talked about. Wow! Those incredible rides! Dangerous or not, everyone was having a riot.
Bahaha! I love the rides. Today people sue over broken shoe laces. I remember Woolworth. Looks like subways or Empire State bldg wasn't made yet. Today buildings are twice the size, rides have all kinds of safety, and people wear a sliver of clothing to the beaches (if we're lucky). :)
I know I'm with you on this one those carnival rides would never pass code today pretty dangerous LOL and at the end with her dancing around in the water like it's a real big deal to get into water
He likes to mention being black because he wants to keep the old hatred alive. If a time machine were to become available in the US, you could safely bet that preference would be given to non-whites who chose to use it. Racism? Yes; but that's how things are in America today.
bingola45 he didn't state that he was black because he thought time traveling would be for whites only. He stated it because there was large prejudice against black people in that era and going there would not be a good experience for him.
OMG! Coney Island had a spinning ride that threw kids off into a ditch, and a sidewalk that moved up and down as you walked?? Awesome. They were never that cool anytime I went to Coney Island.
(guest).Hi, firecracker3240,_Coney Island rides were amusing, weren't they. Bit concerned about where the people landed when they were flying off the revolving platform........the "horse race" one looked fun.........and how about the one where they slid down a tube onto lots of ground level , flat revolving discs! (young men have been seen nowadays doing spinning on escalator hand rails, where they lie across two rails that are moving in opposite directions...rather similar....?....). That should be brought back ! Ah I forgot, "Health And Safety" probably wouldn't allow it now, especially the revolving platform that flung the people off...hope the "riders" had a soft landing, maybe soft sand, or piles of soft cloth, perhaps?
+Brian Russel Haha, I know, the rides looked FANTASTIC! Safe? Mmm, not so much, but who cares when they were that much fun. I especially love the horse riding one and the one that looked like teacups on a roller coaster. You are right... they would NEVER make rides like this in this day and age. And yes, let's hope they had a mat beneath that revolving platform to catch the children. Otherwise, there were likely many broken bones.
They landed in a trough around the turntable. The "horse ride" was The Steeple Chase" The park was allowed to just deteriorate. Every spring the two roller coasters would have to have massive repairs as the wooden parts fell off during the winter. Many safety violations that would have cost a fortune to remedy. My Grandfather and I would go down there to a place where you could buy all kinds of pickles out of huge barrels and sauerkraut. We'd eat the sauerkraut fresh out of the barrel. It was cold and crisp. Smoked Herring and Whitefish, Herring in cream sauce.
Today, this park would never be allowed to even open up, let alone operate. Although life was so much innocent back then, it was also more of a crapshoot since there were literally zero safety regulations. Sometimes it seems like we endure too many regulations/precautions today, but I know the majority are there for good reasons.
It amazes we how ahead of its time New York was 100 or more years ago. Considering the year, it had modern infrastructure: public transportation, highways, parks, housing, etc. It had what many places in the World, including parts of the U S. dont have; in 2018
Dang, Coney Island had some wicked-looking rides! Today's insurance companies would have heart failure envisioning all the lawsuits 21st century softies like us would be filing if, heaven forbid, we got a boo-boo!
awesome footage! Back in the day immigrants came here , they learned to speak English, they took pride in their homes they didnt demand welfare, people were once really proud to be American! Today, different story,,gimme this gimme that!
Ain't that the truth! My father with his cousins came here in the 40's from Greece , started as a dishwasher to owning 3 diners in NY which led to the opening of 12 Greek fast food stores on the east coast. He served in army during the Korean War , loves anything western (Cowboys , gunsmoke) Yes he is proud to call himself an American and grateful for all this country has done for him!!
It sucks the baby boomers let it go to shit. We gotta make this place something to be proud of again. Somewhere where people trust each other and like to be around each other for the most part.
As an asian. Asian immigrants currently do better than other immigrants of other ethnicities statistically. We usually do get educated, and get a white collar job. So not all immigrants are burdens
It is reminded that the footage is from the first two decades of the century. It seems as if the human pool table is outdoors before it was moved indoors after the 1907 fire. Also, the Hippodrome, opened in 1905 seems to be in its early days, so at least part of the footage was from 1905-1907.

By 1930, the beginnings of the great migration from the South and the influx from downtown Manhattan neighborhoods where blacks were feeling less welcome transformed them into a 70 percent majority." Again, early twentieth century Harlem was primarily Jewish and Italian.

Just Gaming diversity back then referred more to culture than racial backgrounds. At that point in time (which was probably in the 1920s) New York City had a diversity of European Americans (whites). Italians, Poles, Hungarians, Romanians and other European cultures made up various parts of New York City. These people brought their traditions, languages and cultures to New York City. By the end of the 1920s, there was a whole bunch of sub-races of caucasians. Although their skin color was pretty much the same and they had similar other phenotypes, they all had other differences such as hair color.
Jesus is our Lord and Savior. Jesus is God in flesh. Jesus is the one true God. We are all sinners and we all fall short of the glory of God. Jesus came to the Earth and died for sins to be washed away so can make it to Heaven. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and the only way to Heaven. U have to do more than just a believe in Jesus to make it to Heaven tho. U have to do the Lord's will. These are the things the word of God told us we have to do be forgiven for our sins, saved, and make it to Heaven. Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Repent from your sins. Get baptized in the name of Jesus. Have a deep relationship with Jesus. Love everyone Forgive others Obey God's commandments. Speak the word of God to the world. Do the Lord's will until the end. There is nothing more important than God. This life is jus temporary but Heaven and Hell is forever. Your true purpose in life is to follow Jesus, have a deep relationship with Jesus, walk with Jesus, learn about Jesus, and lead others to Jesus. God has so many commandments it's 613 of them and it's impossible to obey all of them all the time. U are gonna make mistakes and God knows U can't be perfect that's why Jesus came to the Earth and died for our sins to be washed away. God jus wants U to try your hardest to not sins, to obey his commandments, and to do everything he wants U to do and when U do sin he jus wants U to be honest with him and admit to your sins, ask for forgiveness of your sins, and ask Jesus to help U not give into temptation of sins. Hell wasn't meant for us it was meant for Satan and the other fallen angels. Satan decieved the first humans and caused them to sin and the world become corrupt and most humans choose not to follow Jesus. Satan is decieving people and there are so many people heading to Hell. Satan, the fallen angels, evil spirits, and Satan's followers the Illuminati, the richest families in the world and the Free Masons, they all control the world from the governments, the economy, drug trade, Hollywood, movies, TV, radio, news, science community, schools, and even religion and they are lying to U, decieving U, trying to brainwash U, and trying to keep U from the truth. They don't want U to follow Jesus. Those people are Devil worshippers that sold their soul to the Devil for fortune, fame, and power. They promote sin thru movies TV and music, they try to get U disobey God, they poison your food water and medicine, and they are trying to create a One World Government that Satan will come as the AntiChrist and will rule the world in the last days. And they are gonna try to make U take the mark of the beast on your forehead or forearm and if U take it U will automatically go to Hell. And they are gonna try to kill U. Jesus will come to destroy Satan in the end. Religion is being used to confuse people. That's why there is so many different religions and there should only one religion and that's Jesus. Christianity is even doing things wrong. It has many different religions inside one religion and they are all making their own interpretations of the Bible instead of going exactly what the word of God says. When Christianity was started the Romans took several books out the original Hebrew Bible. Most churches and preachers don't speak the full truth of the Bible they are presching false doctrines. Most of them also follow the traditions of men instead of obeying God's commandments. They are celebrating the Sabbath on the wrong day Sunday the first day of the week instead of Saturday the last day of the week. They are baptizing people the wrong way in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost instead of in the name of Jesus. And alot of them celebrate false Paegan holidays that are satanic. And U don't have to go to church cause Jesus never commanded us to. jesus set his church up on the rock with his disciples and we are suppose to be disciples of Jesus so the us the followers of Jesus is the real church not a building. Church buildings are jus places U can go to praise God, have a fellowship, and learn the word of God but U can do those things anywhere anytime. It's better to make sure U read the Bible yourself and learn the word of God and make sure the church is going exactly of the word of God. If U Love Jesus then U will obey his commandments. U show Jesus U Love him by your actions. Don't live for the worldly things like money, materialistic things, attention, and other stuff, live for Jesus. Dont follow the world follow Jesus. And Jesus is coming back soon.

Wish i could of seen this era myself, looks so interesting.
I wish we had high public trust again. Now there are too many druggies and messed up people. I can barely relax going out most the time. I know I'm not the weird one when I see videos like this. We live in a sick society. It was fun while it lasted I guess.
Can u imagine how it must of smelled 😷
I've always wanted to live in the 1930's-1920's and 1970's-1990's
This would be cool to see in color.
I know someone from that time period I loved the film. Thanks.
rest in peace to all people in this video
I love videos like this, it's a window into the past! :D
So cool to see this! I lived right by Grants Tomb

Can you imagine how simple life was back then. I envy those people
You are so lucky..that person must tell you so many stories from back then :P.I would record everything! hehe
I've read A Tree Grows In Brooklyn many times in my life and never before seen a bona fide illustration of some of the sights/experiences the author talked about. Wow! Those incredible rides! Dangerous or not, everyone was having a riot.
M.R. Storie it was a great book! I remember my Dad giving it to me to read when I was 13. It's a very special book to my family.
I Love NewYork City Forever
Back when people weren't so soft

to be fair, more people DID die because of them. but i agree, western society has become too sensitive and sheltered
I wish I could go back in time and see this era. But two things weigh me down.
1) Time travel technology hasn't been invented (yet)
2) I'm black.
You think a Time Machine would be whites-only?
That's an interesting concept.
He likes to mention being black because he wants to keep the old hatred alive.

Racism? Yes; but that's how things are in America today.

It would be an interesting experience for him. It might do him good to see what 'racism' actually means.
bingola45 Dude. You are really stupid.

60 stories high. The tallest in the world.
ياعالم لو تعرفون شلون قلبي متعلق بهالمدينة 😭💔🖤
Holy crap what is that death ride at @2:04? You think in the 1920s they're just flung onto a hard cement surface because that's how they rolled ? :p
It would be great to go in time to new York city at the turn of the century
The rides look so fun. Human pool table LOL
Dang, Coney Island had some wicked-looking rides! Today's insurance companies would have heart failure envisioning all the lawsuits 21st century softies like us would be filing if, heaven forbid, we got a boo-boo!
caspence56 lol. How true.
Probably brought on by some fat bald dude who’s too lazy to take care of himself and that’s what caused the accident.
those rides look dangerous!
spwilkey w They sure do. Sigh. They just don't make them like they used to. ;-P

To do that, you would have to be proud to be white.
And THAT isn't allowed.
Even TRUMP daren't say that!
Richard Head at least the old irish italian gangsters had honor and would help there own people when they could.
As an asian. Asian immigrants currently do better than other immigrants of other ethnicities statistically. We usually do get educated, and get a white collar job. So not all immigrants are burdens
Trying to guess the year.. Maybe the 1920's based on clothing style.. or cars??
You sure you didn't read the description section?
It is reminded that the footage is from the first two decades of the century. It seems as if the human pool table is outdoors before it was moved indoors after the 1907 fire. Also, the Hippodrome, opened in 1905 seems to be in its early days, so at least part of the footage was from 1905-1907.
conigjo62 judging by the fashions I'd say it was earlier than that.
@@kiranolan7104 no because of the cars
Check out the Prelinger Archives. Not sure what the name is, just do a search on New York City and you'll find it eventually.

What language was the old lady speaking at 0:06?
Those rides at Coney Island looked like death traps!!
im happy to be a new yorker
It’s creepy to think they are all dead
which year is this?
Nostalgia
I see a lot of lawsuits coming from those rides if they were around today lol. Man I wish I lived back then.
good old times!
New York is the best
Ahhh... The 80's.
but oh so much fun :)!!!
The Third Avenue El still existed in the Bronx till the 70s. The rest of it was shut down one night in May 1955 and demolished because it was depressing property values along Third Avenue in Midtown and the UES! It had a stop at Bloomingdale's and went right by P. J. Clarke's, of course. You can see it in 'The Lost Weekend.'
is this copyright free
Yes it is, it's public domain for archived footage. Can be used freely.
They should bring back that Human Pool Table...if for no other reason...just to watch someone's clothing get ripped off by one of those spindles.
First 2 decades of the 20 th Century NYC > (beautiful 'n Clean) > First decade of the 21 st Century India
looks like New York back then in the 1900s are much more entertaining. even the people were not that scared with thrill rides! nowadays?! yeah, some people that I know even disliked ferris wheel and carousel.
and those outfits, man they did really dress to impress!
This had to have been between 1913 and 1930, since the Woolworth Building was built in 1913, and 40 Wall Street surpassed it in height in 1930.
Ayeee I go to school in the lower east side
This is from a NY Times article..."In 1910, blacks constituted about 10 percent of central Harlem's population. Most of the film clips are c. 1917-1918 as far as I could tell
was that 1901 ? or 1898
No but probably on late 1910s or 1920s

Where’s the diversity?
Just Gaming diversity back then referred more to culture than racial backgrounds. At that point in time (which was probably in the 1920s) New York City had a diversity of European Americans (whites). Italians, Poles, Hungarians, Romanians and other European cultures made up various parts of New York City. These people brought their traditions, languages and cultures to New York City. By the end of the 1920s, there was a whole bunch of sub-races of caucasians. Although their skin color was pretty much the same and they had similar other phenotypes, they all had other differences such as hair color.
Just Gaming Diversity was in other boroughs of nyc
hahaha.... yeah, you are the official gatekeeper of all that is truth. sitting there in your undies in your trailer.
Why did everybody dress like jews in those times?

Church buildings are jus places U can go to praise God, have a fellowship, and learn the word of God but U can do those things anywhere anytime. It's better to make sure U read the Bible yourself and learn the word of God and make sure the church is going exactly of the word of God.
If U Love Jesus then U will obey his commandments. U show Jesus U Love him by your actions. Don't live for the worldly things like money, materialistic things, attention, and other stuff, live for Jesus. Dont follow the world follow Jesus. And Jesus is coming back soon.
