EARL HINES AND HIS ORCHESTRA New York, July 14, 1932 Charlie Allen - Trumpet George Dixon - Trumpet Walter Fuller - Trumpet Louis Taylor - Trombone William Franklin - Trombone Darnell Howard - Clarinet/Alto Sax/Violin Omer Simeon - Clarinet/Alto Sax/Baritone Sax Cecil Irwin - Clarinet/Tenor Sax Earl Hines - Piano/Leader Lawrence Dixon - Guitar Quinn Wilson - Brass Bass/String Bass Wallace Bishop - Drums
There's something really cool and haunting about those horn backgrounds. Playing so staccato with mutes in (at least I think), they sound almost like an electric organ. Really fascinating. Also love Earl sliding into and out of double time on his first solo and playing some super active contrapuntal lines on his second! Very advanced rhythmic ideas for this era.
