    The stone is called in English either "Flint" or "Chert"- I've got a whole driveway full of it, as it's quite the naturally occurring rock here in Arkansas. Thank you for this video- so the wife is keeping all the "Altoids" cans we've got

    Thanks for the great video! I use char cloth to light my pipe tobacco so it doesn't taste like lighter fluid, works great!
    The fire starter stone that is generally used (the one you have also) is a stone called "Flint".

    "Chert" is geologist's jargon for flint. It's most commonly found in marine sedimentary rocks, particularly in limestone formations.

    You don't need to punch a hole in the lid. It works just fine without it. The gas can escape from the hinges.

      I don't think that is true at all. It would take the same amount of time. The holes where the hinges are are plenty big enough to let the gases escape.

    If you use methanol in your little stove there the flame will be blue and you won't have that messy black all over your Altoids tin. Makes it easier to re-use. Look for a product called Heet: it's a gasoline anti-freeze. It's 100% methanol.

      +jonathan wu ,, It's what we call PREPERATION. Get an altoids can, enjoy the mints, then save the can to store your char cloth in. It's the perfect size for a bugout, or survivalist bag. The cloth starts very easily with a Farrell rod, one strike and the char cloth will catch!!

      I think he goes camping alot. So while these things can apply to survival situations they are also really nifty for when your camping and say you lose your lighter. By having a backup plan like this you won't be freezing your but off or eating cold food.

    Material is Flint my friend.
    Ferrocerium/magnesium rod's do a better job creating sparks i think. And are very inexpensive. You also get incredibly more use from them, weight for weight. 👍✌️👌

    The method you’re using is called Flint and Steele the stone you’re using is very hard and it shaving very small metal pieces off of your steel which is causing the sparks like your char cloth.
