I asked people at my school if they knew who John Glenn was. Two people knew who he was. Everyone knew who Prince was when he died, but no one remembers a real American hero.
About 10 years ago I did some work on a house John Glenn owned. I didn't meet him at the time, but his wife treated me with nothing but friendliness. Two or 3 years ago they called me back to do some other work. This time I got to meet John himself and shake his hand. He seemed to be a kind and happy man. I've dealt more with his wife than with him, but the Glenns, they're good people who have treated me exclusively with friendliness and kindness. John will be missed, but his mark on history will remain as a testament to who he was.
True American hero, what a brave life he lived. Proud to say I live only 20 minutes from his hometown and very familiar with the school (which is named after him) as we play them every year in the MVL in sports. Go fighting Muskies.
John Glenn left an amazing legacy of space travel and exploration. His accomplishments will hopefully inspire others to reach even farther horizons. May you rest in space John Glenn
I will always remember going to his ticker tape parade after coming back from space in 1998 (I was 7 and got to miss school. My mom's office at the time was in lower Manhattan). R.I.P.
It's sad that I didn't realize how much of an incredible badass Glenn was until he passed away. Fought in two wars, tested prototype planes, strapped himself to a might-as-well-have-been-a-prototype rocket, then decided that space wasn't scary enough and spent 24 years in Congress before finally deciding he'd had enough at ninety-flippin'-five years old. If I could get a quarter of that done in my life I'd feel accomplished.
William Robert Hixon But he then went up to space again in 1998, I believe they said, and retired as senator in 1999. Unless I'm hearing the wrong dates
A man that, among other things, rode a vehicle with the destructive yield of a small nuke into orbit, all in the days when rocket science and computer tech were in their infancy. This man has earned and thoroughly deserves a very special place in history.
I'm not sure he "made history" or that his "flight changed history forever". He was the 3rd person to orbit earth after Gherman Titov who was the 2nd after Yuri Gagarin. He isn't the first American in space, and not even the first person from the USA, as Alan Shepard got there before Glen, but still not in orbit and after Gagarin orbited already. In fact, Glen was the 5th person in space. I understand that he is more famous in the USA than Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov, but that's just because of lasting celebrity as a result of old cold was propaganda.
You know your argument might actually be solid if you spelled his name properly. His name is John Glenn. with two N's. Also, he did make history. He was the OLDEST person ever to be sent into space. I mean, that's gotta be good for something. He was (emphasis on was) also the last living member of the Mercury Seven (also known as NASA Group 1) .
I love you guys! But as a Muskingum Student, I have a correction. Although he may have been born in Cambridge, he grew up in New Concord, OH where his father ran a car dealership. He was a member of the class of 1943 here at the university. He was also a member of a local fraternity called the Stag Club. His wife Annie was also a student here and was part of the class of 1942. Both have served the Muskingum Community as trustees since the 1960s. Glenn was also awards an honorary doctorate in 1961. The pronunciation of the school is Mu-sking-um. You can still visit the John and Annie Glenn Foundation and museum in New Concord. Godspeed John Glenn! You are very missed by your community.
I don't think Glenn was told anything about the heat shield. They asked questions that pointed to it but I don't think they wanted to explicitly tell him in fear he would freak out.
Does anyone know if at 77 he did the 2 and a half hours of exercise daily that astronauts are supposed to do? That'd be insanely impressive on top of everything else.
how come a lot know who know who Neil Armstrong is but dont know about John Glenn. In face many people think Neil armstrong is th e first man in space who is not ture there were plenty of space missions before him that people forgot about.
I can tell you that a vast majority, if not all Americans, do NOT think Neil Armstrong was the first man in space, lol. We are very well aware that he was the first man on the moon. Getting to the moon is a lot harder than getting someone into space. That is why Neil is more memorable. He and Buzz Aldrin were the first two people ever to walk on the FREAKING MOON.
What about a video for Gene Cernan? I honestly am in awe that there has been little to no coverage or tribute to the last man on the moon (in general I mean). Please it would be awesome to have a video for Geno
I'm so happy that you have diversified your hosts ! I will never understand why there are still people against female hosts... well if you see a female in youtube people are normally more tough on them. Well, kee up the awesome work! I love these types of videos, there always very interesting! Science is awesome! (I apologize in advance for any mistake in the English language, not a native)
Damnit 2016! You're taking every single good person aren't you?
MirceaKitsune :,((((
He lived a great life. What an amazing real American Hero.
Greg Wiens Yuri and him have the courage that no one on earth has had and will ever have
R.I.P. Mr Glenn You are the definition of the word "hero".
John Glenn: Marine, Pilot, Astronaut, Senator. What a legendary guy. RIP
* tips an imaginary hat *
New Message
I will go find my terrible-looking baseball hat just so I can tip it.
m'astronaut
Godspeed, Mr. Glenn.
2016 just won't chill
John Glenn was pro-choice, pro-affirmative action, pro-union, anti-nuke and anti-drilling! So all in all a pretty stand up guy.
Half of those things are terrible.
The only one i really have an issue with is affirmative action, but I would agree he is overall good.
You would have to be a pretty terrible person to consider any of those positions terrible.
runawayuniverse No, disagreeing with a dead person doesn't make you a terrible person.
runawayuniverse you're the terrible person for agreeing with some of those points.
We've lost a courageous man. The world should mourn.
Godspeed Mr. Glenn. Go in peace. We will try go forward with your legacy of hope, wonder, and bravery you gifted us.
Is it me or is 2016 the year when famous people dropped like flies?
Jaden Tapscott its true
There are MANY famous people. I don't think that 2016 is any more heavily populated with their deaths than any other year.
2016 is a psycho killer slaughtering people and no one can stop it, at least we're close to its end
Jaden Tapscott apparently this year we still have a 1/500 chance of the world ending based on doomsday interval algorithms(02%)
Great tribute to a great man.
"We'll leave the lights on for you." gave me goosebumps. Great job.
"No. Just a normal day in space"
Best answer ever! ^_^
Makes me want to watch the movie "The right stuff" again.
kim pirihi first thing I did after I heard he passed. The last of the mercury 7.
I asked people at my school if they knew who John Glenn was. Two people knew who he was. Everyone knew who Prince was when he died, but no one remembers a real American hero.
Implying Prince wasn't a real American hero too.
madmax21st hero no, icon yes
John Glenn was one of my favorite astronauts, and I have followed the careers of many of them. He was truly an exceptional man.
At first I thought it said "a tribute to john green" and had a mini panic attack
Same here
This is an example of having the extreme medical condition called balls of steel.
RIP to you and those who had and are risking their lives for the advancement of science and exploration.
Truly an American Legend! RIP Mr. Glenn

You have no idea how much I loved the final line in this episode. It legit brought a tear to my eyes
Godspeed, John Glenn!
John Glenn left an amazing legacy of space travel and exploration. His accomplishments will hopefully inspire others to reach even farther horizons. May you rest in space John Glenn
What a lovely tribute!
My great-grandfather worked on his ground crew in 1962. God speed, John Glenn.
I'll keep the lights on for him!!
RIP John Glenn you have been an inspiration to many and will stay that way.
Rest In Peace, John Glenn. You were a true inspiration and will be missed.
Sorry - this is universal for all media outlets...
DO THE FREAKING TRIBUTES WHILE PEOPLE ARE STILL ALIVE
InfiltrateIndustries isn't a tribute for a person that died?
Gerbils rawr nah, its the thing you do to celebrate accomplishments - while they know
Gonna rewatch The Right Stuff and cry again
The Right Stuff was the first UA-cam video playlist that i make :')
Godspeed Mr.Glenn! You where a true hero who had the right stuff!
I asked people who John Glenn was in my school, only 30 out of the 500 people knew who he was, but they all knew what Pen Pineapple Apple Pen was.
TwisterLord
What in the hell is Pen Pineapple Apple Pen?
What a great guy... That's.. That's all I got.. A really great guy (and an inspiration to us all)
I will always remember going to his ticker tape parade after coming back from space in 1998 (I was 7 and got to miss school. My mom's office at the time was in lower Manhattan). R.I.P.
Godspeed, Sir
it must have been a amazing feeling to be up there for the first time.
stay in history John Glenn!
To boldly go.... RIP
God bless John Glenn he is a truly good person to aim be like.
God speed john Glenn!
It's sad that I didn't realize how much of an incredible badass Glenn was until he passed away.

If I could get a quarter of that done in my life I'd feel accomplished.
I've just watched some videos about his mission as the first american in space and he's like one of the famous astronauts
A life well lived. Thank you Mr. Glenn.
God Speed Mr. Glenn, I salute you sir!
I have read it like A tribute to John Green and almost shed a few tears
Godspeed!
Wow. That must be hard for Hank. Seeing his own flesh and blood pass away. Man, John was such a cool guy, too.
Thank you John Glenn.
What a good/good man.
Marine, Astronaut, Senator, Astronaut. I'd say thats a life well lived. God Speed John Glenn.
missmyidahome almost President too. Would've been badass for a President to fly to space in the space shuttle
#PrayForGlenn
A real man to be remembered 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Wait, does that mean that John Glenn was also the first senator in space?
Kind of gives me ideas for other senators...
James A Clouder he was a sentor years later
William Robert Hixon But he then went up to space again in 1998, I believe they said, and retired as senator in 1999. Unless I'm hearing the wrong dates
*COUGH PAT TOOMEY *COUGH
love the 'just an ordinary day in space' comment.
John Glenn was a Steely Eyed Missile Man
i am subscribed to nasa and i was so confused why all these john glenn videos where coming out i had no idea he died
A man that, among other things, rode a vehicle with the destructive yield of a small nuke into orbit, all in the days when rocket science and computer tech were in their infancy. This man has earned and thoroughly deserves a very special place in history.
RIP John glenn
God speed John Glenn.
I was fine during the entire video until she said "we'll leave the lights on for you" and just lost it right then and there
2016 is going full throttle right to the very end >.>
I went to the 2nd school in the nation to be named after him. RIP ROCKETMAN
I'm not sure he "made history" or that his "flight changed history forever". He was the 3rd person to orbit earth after Gherman Titov who was the 2nd after Yuri Gagarin. Right, the argument fails because one name was spelled wrong. Right, that makes sense.
Rest in Peace hero !
Yesterday really was a crazy day
A. I love this channelB. There are 2 forward slashes under your name in the credits Hofmeister. Thanks for what you do!
We should be celebrating his life, not mourning. Glenn was a great man who lived a great life.
Holy shit I almost read that as "A Tribute to John Green"
Fuck I read that as John Green.
disturbedhalo117 me too!
R.I.P. Mr. Glenn

His pre-NASA military history as described here is completely different from the previous video on him I saw.
A tribute to john green... took me a while
R.I.P. John Glenn
forever a marine
I don't think Glenn was told anything about the heat shield. They asked questions that pointed to it but I don't think they wanted to explicitly tell him in fear he would freak out.
My history teacher told me about this today in class.
i want to see this movie :)
Does anyone know if at 77 he did the 2 and a half hours of exercise daily that astronauts are supposed to do? That'd be insanely impressive on top of everything else.
See you in space cowboy :')

I want to go and look for that one comment that says "the Earth is flat!"...
the Earth is flat!
There, now you don't have to look.
I love science
Wow 13 thumbs down, eh? There must be a culture where a thumb pointed toward the ground means "I like this."
It's been a rough week at Ohio State
Is that why Motel 6 says they'll "leave the light on?"
Godspeed and ad astra
What about a video for Gene Cernan? I honestly am in awe that there has been little to no coverage or tribute to the last man on the moon (in general I mean). Please it would be awesome to have a video for Geno

At first I thought it was Glenn Fry.
