The theme of this song comes from Murder Mystery novelist Dennis Wheatley who in some of those novels had Black Magic and Satanism themes. Terry "Geezer" Butler, bass guitarist would read them.
Basically, the band wanted to make the music version of the horror movie genre. They were doing heavy blues/folk/jazz music as "Earth" and at some point thought it would be interesting to make something dark and different. They got their name from a horror movie narrated by Boris Karloff, their sound partly from an industrial accident, and the rest is history.
Fun fact: The original 1969 garage version (the one heard from Ozzy's The Ozzman Cometh album) has an unused third verse that goes like this: Child cries out for his mother Mother screaming in the fire Satan points at me again Opens the door to push me in I thought it made the song even better and I still to this day don't know why it didn't make the final cut in their debut album
Yes hello it's me again hey there start throwing it two thumbs up froggy if you ever get a chance to go and see him going to see him I went with the big bottle of CC some smoke when I walked out of there I couldn't even find my way home but definitely the concert God bless be safe you and your family from Canada Toronto Scarborough Ontario Carl
This song was their first hit and it's the very first song on their debut album in 1970. Black Sabbath is known as the first heavy metal band on the heavy metal music scene in the early '70's and the band went through a change in lead singers over the band's career. Ozzy Osbourne was their first lead singer from 1970 - 1978 then after that then Ronnie James Dio took over as the band's new lead singer in 1980 on the album titled Heaven & Hell and he did I believe a few albums with the band then they kinda disbanded for a while except for maybe some reunion tours if I'm not mistaken. Ozzy Osbourne went on to have a pretty successful solo music career in the '80's and long after that then Ronnie James Dio launched his solo career in 1983 with the Holy Diver album then his The Last In Line album in 1984 then Sacred Heart album in 1985 then I did not follow his music after that so don't know what he did after those albums but he has now been deceased now for several years but Osbourne is still alive but reportedly not in the best of health in his older age most likely due to years of drug and alcohol abuse in his younger years that have taken a toll on his health and body. If anyone else can add some more information that I may have forgotten that's fine or correct me if I'm wrong on some things. This is just a brief history on the band and it's former lead singers.
Arguably the first ever heavy metal song on the first heavy metal album by the first ever heavy metal band. People had tried to do “horror rock” before this, but it always came off as cheesy or gimmicky. This song is legitimately dark and scary. Black Sabbath never managed to get as horrifying as this again, and it was the perfect way to introduce themselves to the world. No one had ever heard anything like it before, and it changed music forever.
I watch your channel cause I am a big Elvis fan....but I happen to love Sabbath also. Sabbath never glorifies satan. They always have a clear message of "satan is the wrong way to go."
Wow, can't believe you took on these guys, I know this song is quite dark BUT if you have an open mind they have tons of great songs to react to. This album was the first true heavy metal album when it came out in 1970, it really got no air play from commercial radio and sold by word of mouth. Enough of us gave them a listen that the 2nd album, Paranoid, became a huge hit and vaulted them to superstardom. For more accessible tunes from it, try Paranoid, Iron Man and War Pigs. Great band, thanks for giving them a shot! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎶
Thanks for the review. IMHO better Black Sabbath songs to review and introduce to new generations would be Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron Man. Though their whole "Paranoid" album was groundbreaking.
Hi Dani! I really enjoyed listening to your comments. I did subscribe! I kind of grew up with Black Sabbath and saw them live a number of times, both with the original singer Ozzy, and then with their later singer Dio. A couple of small points: 1) on that original album, we always grouped the second song "The Wizard" with the title track as really one song. Its a natural progression and it is unfortunate that the way they produced the album there is a small break that separates the two. (Or at least I'd love your opinion on that?). 2) As for further watching, interestingly enough there is ONE really famous video that showcases Ozzy, and especially the drummer Bill Ward, from this era, and that is "War Pigs Live Paris 1970" at ua-cam.com/video/K3b6SGoN6dA/v-deo.html (12,896,141 views as of today). Unfortunately, there are not a lot of really great live videos of the early band, so many reactors just use the music. I would probably skip the rest of the first album and proceed to either "Iron Man" on the 2nd album, or "Lords of this World" or "Into The Void" from the 3rd album, or "Snowblind" from the 4th album. Keep well ...
Great reaction! If you want some more good surprises... Black Sabbath - N.I.B / Snowblind Pink Floyd - Money / Time / The Great Gig in the Sky Led Zeppelin - Black Dog / Whole Lotta Love / When the Levee Breaks I dare you to be anything less than impressed 🤣
Hi Dani, a couple of recommendations for requests: Disturbed....Indestructible, Into the Fire (warning, it is graphic) and Rush ....Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio
Dani, I would appreciate it if you can react to Olivia Newton-John's 1974 hit titled - (I Honestly Love You) since the song has very beautiful written lyrics and the music is soft and goes very well with the lyrics and Olivia's beautiful singing vocals. The song made it to #1 on the music charts for several consecutive weeks at the time and it's a song of hers that you have never reacted to as of yet since I have checked. The best live performance video on UA-cam for the song is the 1974 performance since it sounds the best and other reactors have reacted to it successfully but if it gets blocked then you can choose a different live version or just do a reaction to a lyric version posted on UA-cam since those are usually not blocked but a live performance just looks better for viewing. I know you will enjoy listening and reacting to this song. Thanks.
The band was named after this song, Black Sabbath. It was actually the bassist, Geezer Butler’s idea. Check out the song Supertzar. Definitely an oddity from Sabbath you just don’t hear.
I hope you do their Vietnam War song "War Pigs". If you do, I hope you will avoid the version with the animated story behind it. It is not really related to the song itself and reactors end up reacting to the somewhat confusing video rather than the song itself. ua-cam.com/video/PrZFscfJxXc/v-deo.html that should do it, if you are interested. It's an all time great song, also worth looking up a live version. I do enjoy your reactions quite a lot.

Black Sabbath the wizard it's a good Piece
“What is this that stands before me” was a metaphor for heavy metal
Ohh shiiiiit

I’d always heard they got their name from an occult book by one of Geezer Butler’s favorite authors, Dennis Wheatley. What is the real story?
Movie.
I so honestly admire you, to react publicly to this poetry.
So damn heavy for 1970 ❤️
1969
Absolutely!
I was definitely looking forward to this reaction 😄

50 yrs later and it still sounds badass.
Tony iommi (guitar)
Bill ward. (Drums)
Geezer butler (bass)
Ozzy Osborne (vocals)
There's a live version of this song if you are interested
It's from Paris in 1970 I think

This was the beginnings of heavy metal music
As they say Black Sabbath is classic and one of the best.

I watch your channel cause I am a big Elvis fan....but I happen to love Sabbath also. Sabbath never glorifies satan. They always have a clear message of "satan is the wrong way to go."
If he were real, he would definitely be the way to go.
Do a reaction video to The Writ and Into the Void, Geezer plays the Bass like a rubber band. Phenomenal

The background for the song is also dark.
I guess that's what happens when messing with the occult like Geezer Butler did back in the days.
