This is my favorite representation of the Annunciation. Fra Angelico's work has some of the aspects of the old Byzantine art - such as the exaggerated size of the figures, and the beautiful, glittering wings of Gabriel - yet, also shows the artistic transformation to a more naturalistic 'Renaissance' look. And, oh! - those wings!
Just a painting of astonishing loveliness. The angel's wings, the expression on Mary's face, the grass in the courtyard and the trees beyond the fence: I could look at it all day. Thank you for yet another wonderful video!
One of the greatests paintings of all time!
Thanks for the amazing work!

I could also look at it all day!
I have admired the fresco so many times during my years living in the most beautiful city in the world. Your analysis is fabulous, thank you.
The view of that painting when walking up those stairs is amazing. Great conversation, thank you!
Thank you of this beautiful video. Truly my favorite place in the world. You can feel the centuries of prayers in this magnificent space.
Beautiful. As a believer, hearing about pieces like this does a little something extra for me. I look forward to learning more.
Thanks for revisiting this fresco. One of my very favorites. Great had images also
Beautiful fresco!! Fantastic video!! Love all of your analysis of art and architecture!
Incredibly beautiful. Must seek this monastery out when I next go to Florence.
If you're ever in Florence, take time to go here. It's so worth it and is fairly quiet. Beautiful art everywhere you look.
to see these pieces in situ is LIFE CHANGING for an artist
Really I have to say this is a painting you have to see in person to fully understand. It's hard to fully describe why but so much is lost in photos.
Dr. Harris- I don't understand when you say at 2:05 that the angel lowers "her" head. Is not Gabriel thought of as a he?
Good point! Generally speaking yes, but angels are also understood to be neither male nor female...
If the angel casts light, why are the columns behind it in shadow?
Anyone else that used watch this in jail?
