  • The 'Surfmaster™ Thinline' is an original Vintage REVO Series guitar, designed and created by the UK Vintage design team and Alan Entwistle. Since 1993, Vintage has enjoyed an excellent reputation around the world for creating guitars which use a blend of classic timber selection, premium branded components from some of the biggest names in pickups and hardware, and an approach to design which lets Vintage instruments perform way beyond expectation. Nick Jennison tells us more.

Groovy guitar! Would love this in a hard tail version as well.

Alan is literally on overdrive these days with the number of guitars he's knocking out. Great stuff :)

Are these tuners really locking ones? Where do they lock?

It's cool that Nick remembers the discontinued (and missed) Charvel Surfcaster. As always, he makes a 500 euro guitar sound like it cost 5 times as much. 😎👌

I allways hoped that Charvel or Jackson would revive the surfcaster but with filtertrons or dynasonics on it and without the diagonal fretboard end. (Though it looked cool with those lipstick pickups)

@@bartvschuylenburg I had once one in my hands with the firm intention of buying it (*back then they had been already discontinued), but the neck was sort of twisted (*very subtly, but tuning was a nightmare). Just one thing: the lipsticks did not only look but also sounded great if you were looking for single-coil-chime. I think filtertrons would be a matching option too!

@@Asado69 oh I love that glassy twangy sound of lipsticks as well. I have two and a half Charvels from the CX line (Strat like guitars). Same years, same factory but build cheaper. The playabillity of those is awesome just replace the cheap pickup’s and bridge and they play and sound expensive. I bought a CX neck on eBay and put it on a mahogany telecasterbody. Crazy good guitars. The neck profile is the same as it should be on a surfcaster just another headstock and inlays.
Did you know that around the same time there were also some surfcasters with a Jackson decal at the headstock that had a humbucker at the bridge?

@@bartvschuylenburg Yes, i knew! I think that was the last series in the late 90s before they definitely disappeared. But, hey, they had only a "profane" humbucker > not even a hint of the lipsticks' charme, so I didn't consider taking them seriously 🙃

Very curious about those “locking” tuners. They look cool and vintage, but I couldn’t see how the lock mechanism would work. I didn’t see the typical knob/bolt that you spin to lock the string. Please explain, I’d like to find these and put them on a guitar.

Wow! Great job of showcasing the full range of this amazing guitar. To my ears, it’s the combo of two of my favorite types of guitars- Gretsch semi hollow bodies and Jazzmasters, plus an incredible bite. Hoping to get one someday.

Thanks for the demo Nick; I love Alan's guitars which I am a collector of...having Alden, Jansen, Revelation & Rapier guitars already in my collection...my latest is a Vintage REVO Colt HS Duo in Blueburst, which is lovely.

Love the James Bond chord at 13:08, other than that, that guitar is absoluetly tempting, sort of perfect hybrid for me

Why are the sounds so muffled?

Thanks very much for this excellent review, particularly the fuzz demonstration! I would really love a review of the Vintage REVO Integra, as I am curious about whether its pickups are a nod to Willi Stich (a.k.a. Bill Lawrence) and whether its nut is sufficiently narrow for me: Vintage does not list the nut width.

It looks very like a Revelation guitar Alan Entwhistle designed a few years ago that had humbucking P90s. I nearly bought one, sounded amazing but the build quality wasn't quite there for a £400 guitar and the neck was a very sticky gloss finish. I would be very interested if this better made
