  • Time for some steam in the fall!
Today we find ourselves along the Indiana Northeastern Railroad to chase the one and only Nickel Plate Road 765 during the Indiana Rail Experience's Fall Colors Steam Special. I haven't attended much of these runs throughout the time they've been going on, so to finally getting to attend one of these runs, especially when the fall colors were nearing their peak. In addition to seeing the 765 making it's way from Pleasant Lake, IN to Hillsdale, MI and return, we also got some movements of NKP SD9 #358 making some moves towards later in the day to take the train back to Hillsdale to turn it around for tomorrow's run. I also want to thank the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society for a fun day and always managing to put on a show with the 765!
We got a lengthy video ahead of us, so sit back and relax as we watch this magnificent engine make it's way through the beautiful fall colors. Although, this isn't the only Berk we'll be seeing this month. But I shouldn't say anymore, or I'll spoil the next surprise. Enjoy!

One of the best videos I've seen in while! It reminds me of 1982, when I first saw 765 in action pulling an excursion through Fremont Ohio toward Bellevue. That thing was flyin"! My favorite steamer ever since. The 358 reminded me of when I was a kid living near a station for the local freight. My brother and I would walk there and watch the crews start the engines, which were almost always GP7s or GP9s, and some of them still in NKP paint. This was right around the time of the merger with N&W. It was great to see an NKP diesel looking so good and running so well. Well done!

What is going to happen to 765 when Fort Wayne aquires 3001? There's no way they can afford to keep up TWO steam engines. Also, they have next to no place to run 765 as it is.

I’m 100% sure they’ll be fine. They’ve operated two steam engines in the past (2716) and I’m confident they can do it again. If anything, 3001 can not only bring in extra income for Fort Wayne but also serve as a backup in case 765 goes down for some reason. 🤷‍♂️

@@mylesspear 765 wasn't in operation when 2716 was owned by Fort Wayne. In fact 765 had been taken out of service following the 1994 New River Train excursions after mechanical difficulties sidelined it. That's why 2716 was briefly leased by Fort Wayne to begin with: because without 765 the FWRHS had no operational steam locomotive.
Once 2716's flues were close to expiring, they had to make a choice between giving 765 a complete overhaul, or putting new flues in 2716. In the end they decided to rebuild 765, giving it a brand new lease on life, returning to the mainline by 2006. 2716 was returned to the Kentucky Railway Museum shortly after the decision was made.

The same thing that is currently happening. 765 will continue to operate.
