Glad I ain’t the only one who noticed the spear through the eye part and how similar it is tae the Irish tales.
Is there a reason why you don't begin videos with "Fàilte [...]", anymore? I just started learning Gàidhlig (Scottish one) partly inspired by the desire to understand what you say at these points.
Not really save perhaps a fear that people were thinking the video wasn't going to be in english and click off quickly. Maybe ill resume it and start trying to splash some stuff in again.
@@FortressofLugh That is actually a decent point, I didn't think of that.
@@FortressofLugh Good video series. Would you provide some references so that I can do some reading on my own. The Celtic Pantheon is hard to find decent stuff on. Thank you.
@@FortressofLugh Also, what was/were the full phrase(s)?
@@FortressofLugh you could always beging the greeting in English then switch to a Celtic greeting.
Maybe that would help ppl
It's been a while since I read this story, but it seems to me that their killing of the giant at the end was unexpected. The giant only asked to be shaved, but this is how it turned out: "And Kaw of North Britain came and shaved his beard, skin, and flesh clean off to the very bone from ear to ear."
No
@@FortressofLugh I would have preferred no response at all rather than an ambiguous "No".
It's stated earlier in the story that the marriage of Olwen will bring about Ysbadaddan's death. That's why he's making the tasks so hard (to avoid dying) and also many of the tasks are preparation for his funeral feast. And he asks for the birds of Rhiannon (who can "wake the dead and lull the living to sleep").
culhwch.info/index.html There's a good translation at this link and the bit we're talking about is about line 328
@@KrisHughes Thanks. I reviewed the story. I still think that the way the story ends is a bit puzzling. The giant makes Culhwch promise to treat him justly before promising his daughter. Is this how it turned out? Was there a disagreement in the understanding of what is "just", or did the giant already think that he deserved to be killed? It is not clear what Kaw's motivation was to maim the giant at the end. The motivation of the herdsman's son to finally chop of the giant's head was clear, at least.
Funny you should post this now, because last night I was writing about King Arthur and researched this story.
Man I remember this story and it might as well be call the Ultimate Fetch that man has ever thought of in mythology. I know it from a book that told a few stories of this mythology but I really didn't expect that they really mean the most ridiculous quest just to marry Olwen. I lost myself halfway through the listing of things of you must get before get this then that and that and also that and don't forget that one person you're going to need to find this one or get this one thing so you can get the other thing. All just to shave someone's beard! Kingdoms and lots of people died from that one boar just to get those specific shears if I remember correctly.
Skyrim music is great
C’mon Fortress, you’re using the same Skyrim music in every video now, it’s getting old.
There’s a bunch of good music out there which can make for good ambiance.
The album "Celtic love songs" by Casadh An tSúgáin is wonderful. If you're Celtic. I highly recomend
