Shade gardens are my favorite. I grew up in a house with a lot of large trees so I guess they remind me a bit of my childhood. I grew Persian Shield for the first time in a container this year and was very pleased with it. I love your combination with the elephant ears! I'm a total sucker for that tropical look.
I wish I had more sun but learned to love shade and come up with colorful and interesting plant combinations :) Yes, woodland aster is adorable but watch out for seedlings. :)
I am so glad I found this video...I have a patch of part shaded area where I have lots of tulips in the ground, now I can place container and plant the elephant ear or caladiums.. thank you for the wonderful ideas
thank you thank you thank you.... we do have shady parts in our garden, whilst the abutilon and rododendron are lovely, some of your suggestions will lift the and tighten the picture really well. xx
Just found your channel. Sounds like you've been gardening a long time. Everything is in top condition, don't know how you do it! Hope to get some growing tips! 😁😁
I've watched a lot of videos on shade plants, and yours is the best. You point out exactly which plant you are talking about, describe each one and give the botanical name to the best of your ability (which is better than mine!) You have a lovely garden. Thanks for sharing.
Everything is stunning..the contrast and textures make it so interesting!!! Love your descriptions and knowledge..I always learn something. Thank you🌿❤
Beautiful shade garden and thank you for all the information and advice. There were several plants I'm going to try next year that you have introduced to me and love the idea of using potted plants in trouble area. Looking forward to more videos!😊🌿

The Hakonechloa (Japanese Forest Grass) is just beautiful in your gardens. I love that bright color in the shade. I need to find one that is hardy in my zone 5a, at a local nursery. Love the winding path that takes you through that area of your garden.
Beautiful garden.. but please put the names of the plants on the screen which will be helpful for beginners like me who are not familiar with the names and plants. Thank you
Hi Yuliya, Thank you for a glimpse of your shaded garden. Everything looks perfect, love that you explain in detail the ins and outs of your selections. I didn't realize that the elephant ears grow in shade, loved the one called "coffee cups". The Persian shield can it winter over outside? I think I will be shopping for the caladiums, they were beautiful. Those I know (because of you) definitely need to come inside in late fall. Do you have help maintaining your garden, or do you do it all by yourself? Enjoy your videos, thank you so much. Jersey Ann from NJ ☺🍀🌿🌸🌺🌻
Yuliya, your shade garden is beautiful. I used the no dig method to make a new bed, thanks to your video. I will be planting next spring brunnera, maybe helebores and a spirea as it's in a shady location. Thank you for all the informative, helpful and beautiful tips. 😊
That was quite pleasurable & relaxing, yet also mentally stimulating. I too have more shade than when we 1st moved here. Thanks for the inspiration to dig, divide & transplant a few things. My dark green Liriope doesn't bloom anymore & where it is, it looks like a clump of overgrown grass. My variagated Liriope hasn't bloomed in a few years either. It's the only one that survived. I'd built a dry stacked flat, native stone raised, curved bed, & planted alternating Variegated Liriope & Palace Purple Heuchera. Most have died. Do they need feeding or a more alkaline soil maybe?
also just noticed that you have a plant list in the description, that is so useful, thank you for putting it up. Iresine is one I will need to look out for.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful shade areas. Do most of these die back in winter months to reappear come spring? My garden is mostly shade and most of my shade plants are in pots so I can shelter them during winter months. I would love to know that I could plant them in the ground and not lose them. I live in zone 9 and many of my plants are tropical.
I have some seedlings from my neighbors Rose of Sharon plants. Her's never bloom, I guess because they are in shade. Does yours have some sun. They are beautiful!
Beautiful! I tried growing azaleas but no luck🤷🏼♀️ I will try again. I also love Brunnera...they have exactly what u look for: bright colours different texture and bold leaves...❤
Lots of great ideas. I’ve struggled w a part shade bed under my river birch tree for years. Watching your videos I’m realizing now that I’m actually lucky to get sedums, peonies, lavender & geraniums to grow there, everything else shrivels up and meets its maker. I’ll have to try some of your plant combinations which I love, but it’s also a super dry location no matter how much I water so not sure what will work. Oh did I mention we get regular visits from deer and rabbits? Not sure why I don’t just give up already? 😂
River Birch! You are my hero! I have three and the only plants that grow under them are: euonymus, pachysandra, boxwood, Kerria japonica, ajuga and not much else. I planted some stuff in planters tho and those are doing ok. Watering under birches is a must.
Y Garden I think I’m like you, delusional about the amount of light and conditions I have, haha. See plant, would like to have plant, plant said plant in and empty spot and say a prayer! Sometimes I just get lucky but if you knew the number of plants that have died or vanished from my beds you would not call me a hero. 😂. I’m learning though! I do a lot of musical plants these days, at least moving them around until something sticks. Thanks for your videos, I always look forward to them. My grandmother was part Russian, so I have 1/16th Russian in me. :)
Oh and I forgot to mention, as if it’s not hard enough I have a kidney shaped bed and am married to the idea of having a symmetrical composition there. I.e. one or two of the same plant on each side!! And it’s on a 45 degree bend in the middle which means 2 different lighting situations!!! Signed, Sincerely, Neurotic gardener 🤓
I have the problem with Rose of Sharon, now I pull them as soon as I see them, one grow into a Rose I have, I dig the rose up so I Could get it out and replant the rose, also it's a good idea to remove those grasses, so the other plants have more room to grow the one at 6:30 minutes in, have a nice day
Oh gosh I'm so glad I found this in one of your videos. That is stunning. I have a side of my home that is shade most of the day. So im happy to have found this look on your garden. I am sooo copying it. Hehe. Great video and I'd love to buy that dang pink tree of yours. Lol. Anyways...just bindge watching your lovely videos. Thanks so much. Dana from pa zone 5b
maybe.... with the shady patch. could it be army grubs with the orange heads? try strong soapy water (whashing powder or liquid, in a watering can) and if that's what it is, they should rise out of the grass within the hour for the birds to eat or to pick up by hand. it looks a lot like something is eating the roots of the grass just there. .... perhaps.....
Good morning. The Persian Shield is beautiful. Is there a hosta that can take a little afternoon sun? The rest of the time is shade. I’m in zone 7a and hosta do well here if watered in the hot summers. Love you garden.
I have Sum and Substance which is planted in nearly full sun and it is doing very well. I'm in zone 5a (it's still in the upper 80's & low 90's here) so that might be a good selection for your warmer zone 7a, if it gets part shade. Check with your local nurseries to get their recommendations.
Margie Schaecher thanks for your answer. I have been growing an old fashioned variegated type that came from my mom over 30 yrs ago. Seems like the summer sun is getting hotter around here and the hosta look awful this year.
@@jgwood10 I know what you mean when you say it seems like it's getting hotter, we cooled down a bit from yesterday's 92 degrees. It's only 85 here right now but the humidity is still awful. Hope you're having a wonderful day.
Margie Schaecher we had a cold front come through last evening. Can’t believe it’s only around 80 now and the next couple of days then back up in the 90’s for the weekend. I’m in VA. Where are you?
@@jgwood10 I'm in northeast Nebraska. Just after 5 PM this evening we had a 6" rain ...that's 6" between the raindrops! lol It stayed totally dry under the trees and shrubs. We do however have a 30% chance of rain over the next 2 days with temps in the upper 80's. I'm ready for fall!
Ugh I’m jealous of your zone (I’m zone 5 in Canada). 😭 That purple shield plant and the elephant ears are calling to me. I may try that purple coleus as an annual if I can get my hands on some...
Hi, I am very much excited about your beautifull garden, I am seeing from south of Chile where I think the weather is similar of yours. I want to ask you if those elephants ears, with such nice and breith colors are perennials, and also if those shady plants that you have will soupport the south wind, wich is very heavy sometimes in Spring. Thank you
I absolutely love your stunning shade garden. I am interested in finding the Iresine plant but I can only find the bloodleaf variety. Where did you find yours? Did you grow it from seed?
Y Garden Yuli, I collect Hosta Inthink I have close to 300 different ones. Liberty is very very pretty. Have you seen Sagae? It looks pretty similar, but gets larger and has an beautiful vase shape form. The other one that’s gorgeous is Spartacus. Two colors and the leafs are ruffled. I think you would love it
Ah, great video! So helpful. Yuliya, I have a situation this year that I haven't had before. We took down a large oak tree. And now two areas that were once mostly shade are now part shade. But not the kind of part shade where most shade plants will still grow: The areas get the strongest sun of the day, from about noon til about 3pm. It's too much for shade plants, and too little for plants that really need full sun to thrive. I know a few plants that can probably take that situation, but not many. I don't know if you have an area like this and could do a whole video on it? But I would love that.
Interesting! I have an area that is most shade but get strong afternoon sun after 2pm. Plants that do ok there are echinacea, rose of sharon, clethra, some heucheras, joe pye weed, tree peony. Some other plants that will do well are boxwoods, yews, ninebark to name a few. Basically you look for plants that will do ok in the shade but tolerate sun.
I love your videos and garden! I am in Santa Monica, zone 10b, and have a large Chinese elm tree. Do you know any shade plants that will grow under that? Thank you, Kim
Love Santa Monica! o boy, zone 10 is so different from where I am but I know Monrovia has a very extensive website where you can find all kind of plants for your conditions. :) Give it a try: plants.monrovia.com/search?lbc=monrovia&method=and&p=Q&ts=custom&uid=36426663&w=perennials&af=lightneeds%3apartialshade%20zone%3azone10
Beautiful combinations you've got there in your shade garden! I especially liked the contrast between the caladiums and the ferns (how can anyone not like ferns??)💚💓👌 I was wondering what zone those asters are? I've never seen asters like that, but they're beautiful😍
Sorry, I just realized you have listed the Asters in the description. Zone 3- lucky me! I'll just have to see if I can find them for sale here in Norway😊
This is so beautiful! I am a new subscriber and I am really enjoying all of your videos. I am trying to stick with mostly native plants, Zone 7b in Maryland. Do you have any other perennials to suggest for dry shade besides heuchera, ferns, wood asters and solomon seal? Big leaves or spreading traits in native plants are fine for my area, as I battle garlic mustard and english ivy.
I thought I'd mention that I generally give my Liriope a hair cut in the month of March, cutting just above new growth. It all comes back wonderfully mounded and blooms a lot. If I skip a year, it tends to get messy looking.
I’m thrilled to have found your channel. I’m curious about the iresine, do you plant that every year or do you have luck with it returning each Spring?
Your shade garden is beautiful. I’m getting great ideas from you. I have a few shade areas I’m now ready to take on thanks to you. I am confused by the peonies in the shade? Can you tell me what type they are? Thank you
Hi Linda! I grow some of the regular herbaceous peonies in the shade. They do fine, just don't have as many blooms. However, you can grow tree peonies in the shade. They do quite well there :)
Lovely garden. Have you suggestions for plants for zone 4? Too many deer eating hostas, so I have planted hellebores, astilbes, bleeding hearts, brunnera. What is hardy enough to survive our very cold and long winters here in central Ontario?
Maybe try some of these: Solomon's seal, pulmonaria, goats beard, tiarella (I especially love 'Running Tapestry), bergenia, cimicifuga. I love finding and growing unusual plants in the garden. Good luck!
What am I doing wrong? I’ve had a Persian shield in a pot for 2 yrs in potting soil, it’s 2” tall and only have 5 leaves. Bright light, no sun! I absolutely love this plant and have a wonderful place for it but I’m afraid it will die if I put it in this terrible soil that I’m going to do the no dig this fall. I’m in zone 8a in Texas with a lot of shade on the northern side! HELP!
Hi Jan! Did you try fertilizing? Mine do amazing in the shade outdoors and one that i planted in ground is almost three feet tall. I do fertilize them with plant tone once a month. They need high humidity! How is your humidity level?
I have fertilized it but with liquid fertilizer and it seems to respond a little. I have a 25lb of Plant Tone. I found I can add a little water to it and use it as a liquid. I’ll try that! All my fertilizers are Espoma.
Thanks, Yula. We have a lot of humidity, around 70 to 85% most of the time, especially in summer! Since it’s so small and we’re going into fall, do you think I need to repot it in a larger pot with plant tone? I also have a pink climbing hydrangea that’s done the same thing. I think I have a lot of repotting to do! When I order plants they usually send 4” pots. I can’t bring myself to put those babies into the soil because it’s so bad.i have a closed in back porch with a wall of windows facing south and I put a lot of my pots there during winter! Things winter over beautifully. Thank you so much for you’re advice and concern! 😁😉
@@greatgardensforall It's all good. Hey, I noticed the Persian Shield seems less iridescent in (which is it?) sunnier areas or shadier areas? And they're an annual right? I'd *definitely* bring that in as a house plant. It's beautiful.
Yes, it has more coloring in brighter location. I tried to overwinter but was unsuccessful (and I overwinter a lot of stuff). I think they really didn't like low humidity in the house. Will try again tho
@@greatgardensforall Yeah, we know you overwinter a *lot* of stuff since you told us your husband was like " *Yulia! Get these plants out of the house NOW* " Ha ha ha ha. But just so I'm clear, it's more iridescent (and has more of the deep, beautiful purple) in *less* light or *more* light? I've noticed it looking more silvery in more light (and I don't like that look). Thanks. Love the videos. Please keep 'em coming.
Thank you for listing these plants and for adding the zones for each plant!

Thank you for watching! Maybe try seeds in your area, those are usually easier to find. :)
Y Garden thank you for clearing that up for me. Have a great evening 🍃😃
What is the plant with the pink stems. Transcript says ear sign.
Do you leave the elephant ears out in the winters in NJ?
Store them in the basement :)
It’s in the shade but I can’t keep the roots in the soil. I’m thinking I should put it in a whole new pot with fresh soil?
I have fertilized it but with liquid fertilizer and it seems to respond a little. I have a 25lb of Plant Tone. I found I can add a little water to it and use it as a liquid. I’ll try that! All my fertilizers are Espoma.
I absolutely 💗 this video, I think I’ve watched it 5 times, I see something different every time I watch it!
👏🏾🥰🙏
I would take those peonies out of there and move them where there is more sun and space to "breathe"
The Persian Shield is *iridescent* (was that word you were looking for)? ;)
Haha! Yes, my second language still getting the hang of it 😂
@@greatgardensforall It's all good.
Get these plants out of the house NOW* "
Ha ha ha ha. But just so I'm clear, it's more iridescent (and has more of the deep, beautiful purple) in *less* light or *more* light? I've noticed it looking more silvery in more light (and I don't like that look).
Thanks. Love the videos. Please keep 'em coming.
What is the plant at 5:46, please? I can't understand. Thank you.
Iresine 😊
Sim conhece .tem
Iridescent
The tree is taking all of the water so that's why the grass can't grow. It's too dry.
Sorry about you’re name, I meant Yula! Right!.
No worries! :)
Transplanted it! It died 😥
