Fabulous, As an atheist I came across Dan McClellan a couple of weeks ago (thanks UA-cam algorithm) and didn't get him, His content is practically identically to many atheist channels (entirely rational and scholarly) but he identifies as a Morman / or long varient) and doesn't think too higlhly of atheists. He makes a lot more sense now and much of what he says is worth taking heed of. His take of " text has no inherent meaning , we just create the meaning in our minds" is a what I've taken away from watching this. Bravo
He doesn't seem to have an agenda or a personal axe to grind; I think that's the best thing. He's about combating misinformation whichever side it comes from - and God knows there's enough of that about.
Did he actually leave the church? I see that comment here and there but I can't find anything from him suggesting he's anything but a Mormon in good standing.
Great interview. As someone who follows professor McClellan for a while now, it's good to see some of his thinking and worldview he comes to his videos with. I also recommend his appearance on mythvision for something more in depth than his short videos.
Dan is a voice of reason the world desperately needs. I applaud his great undertaking in social media communities as discourse is the answer to war and the grave harm it brings.
This was brilliant. I regard Dan very highly, but have sometimes wondered if his video response/takedowns are the right medium for what he aims to achieve. Sometimes I've felt there is a danger in aiming to set some misinformed individual and their followers on a different path (for better) while simultaneously also reaching folks who don't believe a conspiracy but hear his negations and have their own faith worldview challenged to the point of a sort of existential crisis. This particular video is incredibly useful because I got a much deeper sense of Dan's humanity and to really understand the way he thinks about the best way to approach these ancient texts. It has helped to sort of put my head right about some things that I'd previously been feeling pretty depressed about after watching his videos on his own channel, not because I disagreed with his purpose in pouring cold water on conspiracies, but because I probably consider myself as someone in that second camp of passive watchers aforementioned. Thanks for making this interview happen. I'm grateful for your non-combative, safe space / respectful interview style that got the very best out of the opportunity to hear really helpful insights from a very intelligent guy.
Dan is such a calm voice of reason in a space that is sorely lacking in such voices. Thank your for a great interview that answered so many of the questions I had about Dan's approach to faith and the motivations behind his online activity. We need so many more like him in the public sphere.
