I feel where you are comming from. This video made me think about it in a different way.
I've heard some describe the role that we humans can play in nature like this:
In nature the element of movement is very important. (animals move seeds around etc).
Only we humans can do it in a conciuss way with intent behind it. And by doing this - we can have a very positive symbiotic relationship with and impact on nature.
When it comes to thinning seedlings - we might play the role that the animals and weather conditons would normally play if the seedlings were starting outside - only we can do it deliberately with the intent of creating the strongest healthiest plants.
I hope this makes it easier for you if you thin seedlings.
I feel similar ways when cutting branches, cutting down trees and pulling weeds. It can seem harsh sometimes but the mindset that somethings comes with permaculture perspectives really helped me a lot

I threw a whole pack of old Beefsteak Tomato 🍅 seeds in a large pot and was shocked to see almost all of them sprouted AND LOOKED STRONG AND HEALTHY!! Sooo....I called neighbors to offer to bring them some baby plants. 🌱 They were thrilled. And I felt better, knowing that I had found some seedlings good homes. The rest I culled and put the weakest plants into the compost pile. ❤️ your videos!! Please keep them coming!! God bless and keep you and yours safe and well!!

I love that you’re putting out basic starting info - this is what I really looked for in the beginning of my gardening journey so thank you! I’m at a place now where I’m 4-5 years in. I made a BILLION mistakes (and still continue to) and I’m needing more guidance on specific crops and looking for info that’s more scientific like ‘what to add to my soil when my leaves start to go yellow’ or like what crops like what type PH values or if I should always keep my tomatoes and potatoes separate (literally just made that up) etc... I start seeds (and have bought a ton from you so thank you!) and am decent at keeping things alive now. I guess I’m just in that not quite beginner but still don’t know exactly what I’m doing - if that makes sense.

This video gives me courage. I was also wanting to know when and how. When I saw you pull some and "clip" some with your fingernails, I wondered how to know which method to use. Later you explained. I believe I understood correctly that if the plant has grown enough to already have a strong root base, then the seedling needs to be clipped as opposed to pulled out. Thank you for producing such helpful videos!

Newby gardener here 🙋🏻‍♀️ and this video was very easy to understand and helpful. Just planted my sage seeds so I will be saving this video to remember later, if I can get them to grow for me. Thank you!

Great video. I'm saving this for later; I think it would come in really useful in training new gardeners and volunteers in our greenhouses.

This was super beneficial for me! I’ve only ever had to thin seedlings once and it was for sweet peas, but this year we’re starting cucumbers and peppers and I’ll admit I’m a little nervous to thin, but your video gave me some confidence and really great tips. Thanks, Luke!

I thought this video was very helpful because you showed a variation in plants, and also gave visual examples of when to snip... I have had difficulties finding this kind of info in the past. Thank you!

Thanks for all your hard work Luke! I really appreciate all the knowledge you share. This is probably one of the first videos of yours that I (personally) thought was more on the basic side, but I think it’s important to share this kind of info with new gardeners. I never used to thin my plants for all the reasons you listed. I thought it seemed wasteful. This is my fifth gardening season (as an adult... I gardened with my mom and grandmother as a kid) and I’m just gaining confidence in thinning. Great job and keep up the great content!
I’m going to start a vermicompost bin this week when my worms come in. Looking forward to that adventure for the first time. My compost bin just got maxed out so it was time... any updated advice you can share would be great!

This year is my first time trying to plant seedlings. So far, so good and this is exactly the stage I'm at.
With limited space and grow lights, I've sowed some seeds outside into containers. Others, like tomatoes and peppers are under lights. Looking for clarification on which crops would benefit most from an early start indoors and which might do just as well directly sowed outside. (Zone 4b here) Nice work on your videos. Articulate and informative!

I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you! This was my first year starting seeds and I’m wondering about the hardening off process. We have an unheated sunroom. My seedlings got too big for the little 1” squares and I moved them up to larger pots yesterday and placed in the sunroom.Hopefully I am not shocking them too much. I’m in zone 6B in New England. Maybe more content about that process would helpful.

this is so late but ime of a similar situation i got a fan and let it lightly and indirectly blow over them from a distance and then moved it closer after awhile but not making them flail around. or hand fan often w thick cardboard. the wind and light gets them thicker and taller from what ive seen

Out of laziness, I multi-sow Coleus. Of course, I get a dozen sprouts in a 1 inch cube. I then move them to a 2 inch cube. When they are 2 inches tall, I start to regret not carefully planting one seed per cube because I want them spread out. My work-around is just to water the cube, then pull it apart. Each half then goes into it's own 2 inch cube. I can even do that again when they are around 3.5 inches tall. The end result is 4 2 inch cubes, each with a couple of healthy plants.

I tried to do the same thing with Portulaca's and Pansies, but their roots seem too fragile. Maybe a good indicator of whether this will work is the fact that a Coleus cutting will easily root in water in 2 weeks?

Excellent, I just thinned our first EVER seedlings a few days ago. I'm going to have to thin them again either tomorrow or the next.

I am comfortable with thinning but found your video very informative. I've been gardening for decades. My daughter is new to gardening and I'm sharing this with her! I was planning to step by step help her put in her first garden but with every thing going on I unfortunately have to try and avoid gathering together with her 😔 my oldest is in a higher exposure job and my youngest who is still at home has a very week immune system from her JIA so we need to avoid exposure 😔 thanks to videos like yours she can learn without my guidance. This info is golden for an inexperienced grower. Well done 👍🏻

Thanks so much for this video. I’ve been gardening for about 10 years now and never really knew what it looked like to thin out the plants. I originally thought it meant to separate them so you can have more than 1 plant boy was I completely wrong LOL this video was very informational
