- This is a clip from one of my favorite movies "Banjo On My Knee" from 1936. Yes the storyline is weak and some of the acting is horrible, but I love the story anyway and I love all of the great music! It is set in New Orleans. This clip features Walter Brennen (Newt Holley) performing a song medley on his contraption (one-man band). Song medley includes: "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover", "Oh Susannah", "Swanee", "Oh Christmas Tree" and "Dixie". Barbara Stanwyck (Pearl Elliot Holley) is in the audience.
Love Walter Brennan first time I recall seeing this. I do have one of his Christmas albums in my closet break it out every year. thanks for sharing it have a blessed life.
I am glad that there are still people out there like you who appreciate this video. Thanks for letting me know.
Walter Brennan could steal more scenes than anyone I know. He was a great performer that is for sure.
It is an awesome treasure that few even know about. I am glad I can share it on UA-cam.
i had forgotten all about this. i think this generation is not as blessed as we were to have experienced this "down home style" entertainment. the has changed, but we don't have to -if we choose not to!" thanx for the memories
Never saw this, but it is AMAZING to see two great about to be pros get together in the same scene!
It sure looks like he was actually playing all the parts and instruments.
this has got to be one of the best film clips of a lifetime
Like photos, freezing a moment in time for us to appreciate! Thank you for this!
Don't think I ever saw this when I was growing up back then. Thanks for sharing this Lorene!
Watching this once-in-a lifetime event is amazing! And check out Barbara at 1:51. She always gave 110% in whatever she did. Thank you, again for this!
It is pure music and movie magic!
Loved it ! Thanks for posting.
Buddy Essen is also in this movie.
Thanks for sharing this clip. What a very versatile actor Walter Brennan was who would have thought he was Musical as well as a first rate actor... Can this film be bought on a DVD???
How cool
I seen this movie on the TCM channel 6yrs ago and tried to find a copy it took me 2yrs to find one copy online so I bought it but was disappointed due to poor quality but never the less still viewable yes it is a low budget film by todays standards but still a wonderful story and I am proud to have it my collection but would still like to have a better quality copy if anyone knows where I might find please let me know thank you ....................
@McGrenzer It is classic! This type of musical art form is all but gone now, so sad!
@Scharpy1 It is a one of a kind! Just simple, how things used to be.
@lucripet It is a real gem isn't it.
There you go again Pepino!
Go to TCM.com, click on shop. You can type the title into the search box. They have it on DVD for $19.99. Hope this helps.
Was that Barbara Stanwick?
I don't remember this scene from Banjo on my knee.
The music is dubbed in although Walter may have played the music.
