Serum is possibly the only synth out there (not counting Kontakt) that you might consider buying solely for the third-party content available, like presets and tutorials. There's a huge variety out there. That said, if you want to save some money, the free Vital synth is very similar in sound, quite intuitive to use, and arguably more flexible and powerful than Serum. For someone starting out on a budget it's a great choice.
