I love the way you take a rather dull or muted photo and make it come alive with color in your paintings. I learn a lot watching your videos, Rick. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us.
Rick, you are one of a few teachers on UA-cam who generously shares with your audience your whole painting process, end-to-end. It is really enlightening to watch your work with your well thought over explanations, without rush and speeding up the recording and of course without irrelevant annoying background music. This is exactly what we need to get better with your kind help and guidance. Each of your videos is a real treat.Thank you!
A pleasant fall composition..a favourite season to paint...a logical progression as always...showing how you interpreted the photo is very helpful, also why you concentrated the darks in one area
Nice process, esp. your ground handling! Trees and their branches will tend to lean in and grow toward the empty space of the water path where there's more light.
It was fun and interesting to follow and See how You mastered the different sides and how You combined the colors to get the effect You wanted. One thing I need to remember is the way the colors got more pale when it dried, a good knowledge!
Beautiful. I loved that you created a different color palette and mood than the reference photo, creating a very inviting autumn scene. We are going to Starved Rock next weekend and this is a great inspiration for a fall landscape.
Watched this one from New York. Beautiful. A good lesson in interpreting a photo rather than copying it. Probably the most difficult skill. I discovered the Blick stores and saw your Holbein colours after having bought my Cotman supplies!!! My son can bring some over. We amateurs get fixated over what artists use. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Rick, I started the video and when you said, Halloween Orange my head popped up, just one of the colors I love from Cheap Joes. They have given their paints fun names. I paid close attention to the water fall, I have trouble there. Then when you talked about tangents I remembered your previous video. It’s always good to be reminded. It looked great with the white mat. Someone will really enjoy it.
That is one beautiful photograph and you painted a lovely interpretation of the scene. The color of the water is amazing! I appreciate that you focused on the middle ground however, the background trees are just as pretty. I really enjoyed watching you use the side of your brush on the rocks, before you even brought it up in your narrative. Thank you for showing us the process!
Hello Sir, waking up to your painting on Saturday morning is one of the happinesses in my life. Following you has made my life happy and beautiful. thank you very much for that. I wonder how you manage to upload so early in the morning. And wonder even more at your sense to look at nature, it is so beautiful and yet so simple. They say simplicity is the most difficult thing, n you do it so easily. Painting is as usual awesome and so real. Beautiful colors. Thank you so much for this video! Good day!
Thank you Sonali ! I'm pleased that you find happiness in my videos !!! I agree that simple things can be the most difficult to grasp at times. The beauty with UA-cam, I can schedule my video to post any day or time that I choose....normally that's Saturday morning.
When did you remove the salt? Did you leave it on until the end? Also the finished painting has more saved splashes of white along the rocks. Did you use more masking fluid? Watching your tutorials are always so inspirational and motivates me! Thank you as always.
Hi Didi ! At the 11:35 mark the video fades. At that point I dried the paper with a hair dryer. Once dry, I lightly brushed off the salt. After using salt, I usually dry my paper right then and remove the salt. I did use masking fluid on the edges of some of the rocks..... Hope your getting a chance to do some painting !
Beautiful technique, composition, and color!
Thank you, Rick, for your precise and simple (appearing) process. Love watching your paintings grow from nothing into something gorgeous.
Thanks Judy !

Beautiful!
Do you paint most everyday?
How much time does an entire composition like this take?
Yes, I try to paint every day, but I'm not always successful. A 1/4 sheet painting such as this normally takes about 2 hours
Learn (or retain) something new from each video - thanks
That's great Audrey !
