  • In the latest instalment of Global Street Style, i-D gets to know Shanghai's bold new generation of artists, designers and musicians working their way around China's Great Firewall.
    With a strong focus on nurturing local sounds and producing new aesthetics, youth in China are determined, VPN-savvy and creatively thriving. Forward-thinking music and fashion collectives like Asian Dope Boys and Genome 6.66 Mph are bringing an energetic new Chinese crowd into the clubs, whilst young designers and stylists, like Joey and Yin, are flipping the Made In China label on its head by utilising access to factories to create their own clothing lines. With no cultural nostalgia, and a bright future ahead of them, i-D meets the unstoppable creative youthquake of Shanghai.

      @Shah Bhuiyan Just what I've heard since I haven't been there, but Chengdu has a large underground scene. For example, a lot of the growing hip hop scene in China is from Chengdu (for example VaVa with My New Swag, as heard on the Crazy Rich Asians soundtrack).

    我觉得他们的东西做的很酷,很有想法,回头上淘宝搜一搜不知能不能识图找到。但同时我想说,这些很难成为中国主流,因为这些艺术造型全是基于西方甚至东洋审美的空中楼阁,本土设计师所做的本土化彷佛是在拼命剥离中国元素,而不是融合。在中国经济崛起的今天,包括我在内的广大中国青年想要的是自己的文化自信,很抱歉早些年前那些“美国的就是酷的”“日本的就是好的”的思想现在不吃香了。更主流的青年文化反而是“土到极致就是潮”的国潮和汉服复兴。谢谢制作发布这个视频,但很抱歉我觉得报道得挺主观的,当然,这可能是剪辑的原因。里面传达的这种基于西方视角的愤世嫉俗,叛逆主义从来都是在中国水土不服的,而不是什么所谓“受到社会主义邪恶中国政权的排挤和传统落后文化的不容”。

    Underlying assumption of this video: A Chinese yearning to look and sound western( maybe a fake distorted west that only exist in their brain) are good Chinese while those not are bad.
    Don't forget one thing: every Chinese in this video speaks English and ask how much of a percentage of people in an anglophone country speaks Chinese?

    • @isaacsheu2282
      @isaacsheu2282 3 роки тому +7

      Yeah, I liked this video but got this impression too. Also, some of the people shown in this video are not native Chinese or they came from the most westernized parts of China (Scintii is from Taiwan, that other guy is an American of Hong Kong heritage and etc), so it's obvious they would prefer western aesthetics and music and criticize the CCP too. But it seemed kinda unfair to benefit from the economic burst and technological innovation that the CCP brought while pretending to be heavily oppressed and suppressed by the government when, in fact, it doesn't look like it. I'm not saying that the Chinese government can't be criticized, but this video showed contradiction. Why someone from Taiwan and the US would move to mainland China to be an avant-garde artist if the government censors they so much?
      But, anyways, Scintii made her global debut a while ago, if y'all want to listen:

      I don’t exactly agree with that assessment. The electronic music they are so enamored with draws more on eastern sources than western ones in general, when people like John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen were first experimenting with music they drew heavily on recordings of Buddhist ceremonies. Also the performance art shown draws heavily from eastern traditions. They are seeking any type of creative and youth culture they can find. Actually most of the textile factories near them are creating garments based on western designs and desires, the artists from this video are placing some of the only designs both by and for eastern consumers.

    • @lunino4374
      @lunino4374 2 роки тому +2

      That's 100% in your head, man. Most of the people don't dress "western" either. Sure, they take from some western aesthetics and aesthetics from overseas, but why do you equate that with "wanting to be western"? The people in the documentary seem to have a certain pride about their scene and it's Chinese-ness. You have just allowed your own hyer-nationalism to cloud your judgement. And sure, they are somewhat isolated subjects, but that's kind of the point. Pointing out that they are different, that they dress different, that they have different tastes doesn't assume that they are "better" than others or that they are representative of their country as a whole, if that was the case there would be no point in focusing on them.

    • @lunino4374
      @lunino4374 2 роки тому +1

      @@isaacsheu2282 Where is the CCP criticism in this video? They just vented frustration at certain aspects of censorship, it's not hypocritical at all. Are Americans hypocritical when they criticise police brutality, because they benefitted from the American government's historical prosperity?
      It seems like the CCP bootlicker community are hypersensitive when it comes to Chinese people having non-state fed opinions about anything. People in this video expressed the most benign dislike of the Great Firewall and instantly they are accused of being anti-CCP and chided for having any objections to any government policy just because of economic prosperity. It's absurd and pathetic.
