The dive is primarily used to extend your range when attempting to get to a ball. Meaning when you do not have enough time to run under/through the ball. The dive allows you to contact the ball just before it hits the ground. I will also use the dive as a safe way out of a situation. For example, if I am stumbling or falling forward, I will often dive. I have found that it actually puts less stress on my body, especially my knees.
So my girl, does so many dives, her hips use to be so bruised. And of course they wouldn’t heal before having the next tourney and get bruised again. I got her a hip guard. Which has worked wonders. But of course as soon as I got her the guard (which helps) she began perfecting her dolphin dive. And in practice right before this last big tournament in Gatlinburg, she did a PERFECT one. And it was so funny, because she always compares to you, for like everything. And I said “wow! You did an almost perfect Delaney Dolphin!” I wish I had recorded it because then she coulda seen it. But it was so good!
Also she will love having this video from you to go by. Which she knows how to do it, it’s just getting better at it when you go down. And diving this way vs the old way she use to.
I feel her pain, I used to leave tournaments with literal oozing sores on my hips. Tell her congrats and let her know now that she has the basics down, her dives will only get better from here.
I‘m a setter, so I never really trained diving so much, but this really helped! (Always found it kinda embarrassing, my teammates were so much better at diving than me)

Make sure when you’re dolphin diving to have arm sleeves. Do not use other stuff like long sleeve quarter zips or workout long sleeves as they can burn from your friction against the floor

how do you not get hurt when diving like when your body contacts the ground after hitting the ball? My right knee hurts so bad bc when I dive my knee hits the ground when I fall back but how do you prevent this from happening? Can you do a dolphin dive and finish by pushing you hands to slide more on the ground or should you land on your forearms? I’m primarily asking this since if I attempted a dolphin dive, I’d get serious rugburns on my forearms since I don’t have elbow sleeve pads.

it does not. I am keeping more of the impact/pressure on my forearms then stomach. By keeping my head up, that keeps my chest from impacting the floor. Yes, there is some contact but not really any impact there.

Yes, I have had to do it as a follow-through going off the sport-court tiles at a qualifier. However, I do not recommend doing it until you have gotten really good at the dive.

Kind of like leg lifts, but....... Lay flat on the ground on your stomach, then lift your legs and arms......kinda like SUPERMAN on your stomach. Always think to go backwards on what your end result should seem to be, then go step by step basically.

You do get used to it to an extent, but you are probably landing with more downward force than you should. You want to have as much forward momentum as possible so that the impact is less. I know girls that don't use padded sleeves, but I really recommend them.
I know a lot of players do not typically learn this until much later but I feel the sooner the better so they can continue to develop the skill as they advance. I actually was teaching this to one of our 11s teams last week.

The key to a good pancake is to have your hand flat on the court as the ball hits the top of your hand. There cannot be any space between your hand and the surface. Having your hand cupped can also cause the ball not to bounce well so make sure the palm of your hand is flat on the court. The challenging part is timing getting your hand under the ball just before impact. That just takes practice, practice, practice.

sleeves!! there’s ones that you can buy seperate that are pull ons, or just compression long sleeve shirts. elbow pads can also help with this!

I think when diving u dont really land on your chest because your arms are sliding in front of you so it helps keep your chest lifted above the ground
Does this kind of dive work on concrete floor? Thats what we use for our weekly tournament.
