Couple of things to remember. First off, Jimi recorded this long before guitarists had a board with a dozen different effects pedals. What you hear is a product of Jimi bending strings, riding the volume control, a wah wah pedal, and Jimi's immense talent. 50+ years ago's technology. SRV was greatly influenced by Jimi, damn straight, but he didn't do a slavish copy, he played Jimi's music through a filter of Texas blues. Solid cover that sounded like SRV. Jimi was a revolutionary player. When he turned up on the scene he blew everyone's minds. Often imitated, never duplicated. The Man.
Stockholm Red House is where he is most dynamic in my opinion. Crazy articulation and expression. It seemed like he was actually frustrated with his phrasing too while he was playing. But regardless you can’t go wrong with anything Jimi.
Ned from Spain saying OH MY ! fellas. There are interpretations by many great players but the original has a magic that is truly untouchable. It's not just his formidable technique but his touch, taste, colors, interplay with his band, flexible tempo, vocals with a true emotion that is remarkable and astounding. These are not just songs but his very personal, unique interpretations, visions and expressions of the world around him. Amazing as well to think of how much music he made in the very brief time that he was around. It's wonderful to see you guys hearing him for the first time you're gonna love him. Stay well and thank you
You guys are the best!!💞 I am SO happy to see this reaction today. The other "Little Wing" versions are fantastic but Jimi's voice is so pure and sweet with these lyrics - brings a mystical element to it and his guitar playing is something else entirely. Yes it is short but it is perfect. Thank you, thank you!🦋
If i only had one rock song to listen to for the rest of my life, this is the one. The soulfulness and lyrics and music make me feel a certain kinda way. Anybody who says Jimi can't sing needs to listen up.
Shout out to Mitch Mitchell, another of the English drummers schooled in jazz, transforming rock n blues in the 60's - always part of the Hendrix sound for me...
Jimi 'birthed' this, other covers are Tributes to the creator. The GOAT!! Now you know...✌🏻🌈 His voice lifts me to another plane. And it's beautiful❤ Miss you Jimi🌹
If I had to pick a Hendrix sone, it'd be Machine Gun off The Band of Gypsies album. The guitar solo is pretty sick. No proper words to describe that one.
Hey fellas. JImi, Jimi, Jimi! So glad you got to this one! It isn't just his playing and singing, Jimi knew how to make great records. His creativity and style are always front and center. You really should check out his first album (yes, I said "album", I'm old -school and proud to admit it!) "Are You Experienced". This was the record that introduced us all to Jimi back in the day. So many great songs on that one. Check out "Fire" I really think you'll enjoy that a lot. I am enjoying your reactions, as always. Peace.
Thank You for playing all the different versions that show how each artist uses different colors to paint a story of the same song. It's like BBQ - so many different styles, but all good.
You can already hear why SRV didn't even try to dishonor Jimi trying to sing Little Wing. But you hear why Jimi Hendrix was SRV's idol. This song I do believe was what changed SRV. He worked a long time to get that tone. SRV added notes in between to represent Jimi's voice.
I love watchin you young cats feelin Jimi in 2023. He would be blown away to know how popular he is in the farrrr future of 2023!! RIP Maestro Jimi! Thanks guys!
Thank you guys! Apology accepted haha...Incredible right! Jeez, there are like 7-8 different layers of Guitar, one of them is being fed through a Leslie AND he sings through a Leslie as well! And you wanna talk about GREAT and inventive drummers, Mitch Mitchell was THE MAN! More please..."Gypsy EYES" or "Castles Made of Sand" will blow your mind, or "if 6 was 9"! Jimi also does not get enough credit for his singing! Such a beautiful & velvety tone...amazing on every level. I think "PM Dawn" based their entire career on THIS sound haha...Their cover of "You've got me floatin'" is pretty awesome...
The best he ever did. This is so mature and beautiful. It’s soaring and majestic and proud and vulnerable. My favorite hands down. Stevie Ray Vaughn’s incredible cover expands the theme while honoring the original.
There is one more version that you guys should check out. Jimi's live version recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 is probably the best version of the song I've ever heard. It's just glorious.
Imho this song is the perfect encapsulation of Jimi's genius. Great singing and lyrics. His guitar work is sublime; everyone focuses on his leads but this shows his sophisticated rhythm chops and good God, that tone (love that swirling Leslie). So, so good. This is my number 1 desert island pick.
Part of Jimi's sole is no doubt in SRV !!! Vaughan Loved Jimi's music and is why Stevie always honored him by playing it on stage, it's not better or worst .... SRV just puts his own edge on the music !! 👍🎼 And now they play off each other everyday !! 🎸🎶🎸
So many great hendrix songs, many versions of little wing live, bold as love gives me spiritual chills, stone free, 51st anniversary, highway Chile., castles made of sand the list goes on.
Those who played this song were showing respect to Jimi. His voice calms the listener doen. He took a right handed guitar, flipped it, strung as a right handed guitar, and played it left handed. In 1967! The world lost a true talent when Jimi died.
Awhile ago I made a mix tape of Little Wing. Jimi, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray, and Carlos Santana. Each put their own heart and soul rendition into it. 20 minutes went really fast listening to it.
This is the incredible song that made me fall in love with Jimi and his sound. This short tune featuring Jimi's sweet, gentle and magical voice that almost whispers into your ears like sensuous laughter. I've looked at Jimi and Stevie as almost Polar opposites only because I see a very tall left handed black man and a shorter right handed white man; both were guitar geniuses in their uniqueness and natural talent. Both will always remain legends. I'm pretty sure that they have shared the stage at some point in time, maybe more than once.
Hendrix's version comes alive inside the listener. It grabs hold of you. It's such a great chord progression that lends itself so well to solo parts. Sting does an awesome cover of this song you should check out. Thanks for this one!
If this means more Jimi Hendrix reactions then looking forward to that by itself but it also means you're going to discover more Mitch Mitchell. I think in any other band he might have been more famous as one of the great drummers but the Jimi Hendrix Experience was mostly about experiencing [arguably] the most gifted guitarist of all time so Mitch didn't get as much popular recognition as he otherwise would.
I was 11 when this album came out and I purchased it and still have it today. Jimi Hendrix's music is such an important part of my musical consciousness as it was to SRV.
Well done as usual. Thank you. I am a long time Blues/Hendrix fan. A favorite of his is a track called THIRD STONE FROM THE SUN, from the ARE YOU EXPERINCED ALBUM. A great Blues piece. Thank you..........Good Luck BP
Les Paul amazing guitar player and the man who invented and developed the electric guitar back in the 40s said the Jimi Hendrix was the first person he heard and saw that played his invention the way it was supposed to be played . Up until then everyone even himself was playing the electric guitar like an acoustic that was amplified . Guitar was never the same after Hendrix showed the way .
My parents and relatives had most of the 60s albums so I got to hear a lot of them. Full albums were amazing back then. Even if it only had one hit song it was all good. Jimi easily made emotions and thoughts come out of him
- "I apologize for playin' this one last." - Your sheepish delivery had me literally LOLing, and w/ great amusement/joy :) Thx. - Many have covered Jimi, and done quite well, but no one can "re innovate" what's already been done! - More Hendrix :)
Hi La and Che. Thanks for another great song and reaction. Although I agree that it's good to start with the original great performance of a song, I think your sincere apology is kind and unnecessary. Thanks for being you, and for helping me re-experience--and learn about--the music that I've enjoyed for so many years. All the best to you and yours!
Still one of my favourite songs of all time 😍such a beautiful composition. I once read that Hendrix was a bit embarassed (or not confident) about his singing abilities/or quality of his voice, so he would try to keep in the low in the mix in terms of the recordings. I don't know if that is true or not, but I have always loved the warmth of his voice, especially in this song (among others) 😍
These songs were released after his death. The album have hadn't been finished and all the songs still had work to be done on so just they released what they had from the recording sessions . I saw Hendrix in 1968 in Toronto at the CNE Coliseum
Jimi was a Creative force, who played. We forget that music is "playing". We all play, if healthy, and we laugh with joy while playing. But few played with an instrument or tool like James Hendrix. He was such a lovely, beautiful human being, and his gifts to us reflect his soulful creations. He played, and we all wish we could play like he did.
Great reaction to a tremendous song. Three versions mentioned, doesn’t really matter what sequence you reacted. The important fact, is genius of “ little wing “
My dad had an 8 track, i think live at the fillmore east or something like that, and that live version is my definitive version. The solo in that version was out of this world...
Great reaction as always guys. Jimi was unique. He's truly uncopyable since he never played the same part the same. A true genius. The story goes Eric Clapton jammed with him with his band Cream. He walked off, smoked a packet of cigarettes before saying Jimi was the greatest. Even Pete Townshend said every guitarist had to find another way of playing when Jimi came along since no one could copy him. All the British guitarists loved Jimi. His drummer Mitch Mitchell was only 19 years old when he was playing. What talent!! Keep up the great reactions, but you need to Listen to Zeppelins In My Time if Dying 😊
That's why everyone wanted SRV to join their band. True story. Bowie landed SRV for one tour because everyone else wanted him to be a permanent band member. Stones, Clapton, Zeppelin and many top bands tried to sign SRV. Look it up. He was the only other guitar player they heard on Jimi's level. It's not disrespectful to speak facts.
@Greg yup, SRV was amazing. I liken him to Jeff Beck. Both guys virtuosos that may have been just too damned good to be just a member of a band. Being that goods puts you in the limelight. Andcascee know, singers have egos! :)
@@midnightsun4511 I met SRV. He was kind and humble. Much more skilled than Jeff Beck to be honest. SRV in warm-ups even before final sound checks could do anyone's riffs. He idolized black R&B legends before he ever heard Jimi Hendrix. Once he heard Jimi, he added him to his range. Jimmy Page, Beck and Clapton were in SRV's rear view mirror by the time he was 24 years old. At Cheatham St Warehouse in San Marcos Texas at age 17, he was doing Jimmy Page during sound checks. It took all of SRV's attention to get Jimi Hendrix in his range. Since SRV didn't have the vocal abilities of Hendrix, he would add notes in Jimi Hendrix covers to fill what his voice couldn't do. Jeff Beck is no slouch mind you, but probably Johnny Winter and Alex Lifeson more interesting with more creativity and range going to Alex Lifeson. Tony Iommi has to be above Jeff Beck in my book. Some can argue Beck's abilities in the studio could eclipse Tony or Alex but I haven't heard either struggled to lay down what they wanted to record. Clapton when he was with Cream at his peak abilities was amazing. Because Ginger and Jack Bruce pushed him. His addictions really stunted him. It almost happened to SRV but he got clean for a few years before the helicopter accident. Maybe just 2 years. When he was young starting out just beer and weed he was amazing. And even into his heavy drug use before rehab. But he was struggling to keep up with shows and doing studio work. Tommy and Chris got stood up too many times and laid down the law. SRV loved them so much he went to rehab. He never had a racist bone in his body, no drunken babysitting event required. Why? He was always down to Earth, humble, kind and full of love. I understand Jimi Hendrix was very similar in personality. So they seem to be paired in history for all the right reasons. (No offense to Jeff Beck long way of saying but SRV in another league. Rush probably best live band I've seen, but SRV was the singular greatest solo talent I've seen live. Probably 30 times, maybe more maybe a few less. Too many times to count. He was all over Central Texas and I missed more free SRV concerts than I saw. He made many beer sellers a lot of money. Once all the British bands started courting SRV to join their group, his show cover charges went up, and people from all over the world were blowing through Austin to catch his shows.).
@Greg Thanks for nfo bud. When it comes to guitarists, we've all got our favourites I suppose. My own are Blind Willie Johnson and Charlie Patton (Hendrix for electric) Not because they're the best, but because I feel their playing. Take it easy mate 👍
I love the drummer, Mitch Mitchell, too. I've heard that neither he nor Jimi liked the bassist, Noel Redding, very much. Eventually, Jimi ended up bringing in Billy Cox (his army buddy) on base and Buddy Miles on drums to form Band of Gypsys. I saw Buddy Miles solo show live in the 1970s. He was great. His big hit was Them Changes.
Jimi was a complex, multi-talented artist who was shockingly smart and insightful about the human experience. To get just a glimmer of some of this, check out his appearances on Dick Cavett. I have no idea why he liked going on that show, but he gave some very interesting interviews as well as performances. However, I think Jimi would agree that the best way to discover him is to simply listen. Electric Ladyland from beginning to end in one sitting. It will change you, for the better.
There was a slew of top talented rock talent dying of overdoses. So much bad drugs it has always made me wonder if England's Royal Monarchy's tax collector was getting revenge on musicians on whole because their banking moved to USA. Imagine a time when USA was the 'offshore tax shelter'? For the Brits and their managers we were. Why Jimi? Black guy popular in England no taxes coming in was taking sales away from bands still banking in England. It was a theory back then. Rupert Murdoch-ski's crimes makes me want to believe it.

Hendrix was a whole other level of human. So unbelievably talented. Try the studio of Red House.

It's never too late to hear a Hendrix song for the first time.
The Wind Cries Mary is another beautiful vocal and ballad by our Jimi❤❤❤
No doubt this is a beautiful piece of art, and the best version.
The others are excellent music, Jimi's gives me goosebumps.

This is the BEST version. I was 12 when Jimi died. I cried for a fucking week.

The shortest gem of a song in musical history. Period

Axis bold as love. One of the very best albums of all time.
