To all of you who thrash American football with the typical "arguments" like "breaks for commercials", "pads because they're scared", "a few seconds of action and 5 minutes of breaks", "stupid sport" etc. - you sound exactly like Jim Rome when he talks about soccer.
I always laugh when he mentions urine bombs because I remember my dad telling me stories about how when he was a kid he was at a soccer game in Mexico city and he was hit by a rouge urine bomb. Classic
He is absolutely right about everything. Futbol is the only sport where the athletes make me feel manlier about myself. And before you start, I'm not even American.
It already gives me enough pleasure that everyone calls it soccer lol. At least they get that part and don't call it football anymore. It was annoying when they did because I always thought they were talking about the NFL. But at least this younger generation gets it. It's called SOCCER!
This is probably the most accurate and true thing that Jim Rome has ever said about any sport. Hate the guy but I agree with his points about that shitty sport called soccer.
It's more equivalent to like 3.5 - 2.5, which is a very important distinction, because you can win without scoring a whole point, something that's impossible to do in soccer. If soccer adopted Rugby/US Footballl scoring, and awarded 7 points for a goal and, say 2 points for shot-on-goal, that would make it a hell of a lot more interesting. Obviously some subjectivity would come into play for determining a "shot-on-goal."
farfolomew Lol that wouldnt change anything beyond the presentation of it. There would still be the same amount of goals and shots on goal (lol @ suggesting awarding points for a shot on goal btw!) in practice. Also RE: the low scoring. Football games usually take around 3 hours to finish, sometimes more. The typical soccer game is done in around 2 hours with halftime included. In other words, the actual number of goals vs touchdowns for every minute of viewing time in football/soccer is probably not much different at all.
"how very soccer of you" hahaha I play soccer all the time and I just think this is funny. People take this stuff too seriously, he's just an entertainer lol
***** Mate, if American Football don't change quickly - hint: get rid of the helmets and learn how to tackle properly - soccer's going to take up a lot of the slack from parents who don't want their kids getting concussions.
***** Mate, I played rugby for 15 years and I coach Union. I'm Welsh. I know rugby thanks. And I'd be highly surprised if you watch anywhere near as much rugby as I do American Football. Why this need to talk shit when you've no clue whom it is that you're talking to? And nowhere have I said that American Football should remove the padding, just the fucking helmet.
I don't know how to explain this to you clearer: the helmets c-a-u-s-e head injuries. The helmet gives the tackler license to lead with their head. It would not happen without helmets. It's that simple. As for the rest, how are you not getting this?! I've never said they should take away the rest of the equipment! As for the hits. Watch some Rugby League. Completely different sport to Union. The hits are huge, in part because play restarts after each successful tackle so the opposition are almost always ready and reset for each new phase of play. Much like American Football only much more relentless.
Nope. If you don't get a try within five tackles in rugby league the opposition get the ball. No need to force a turnover at all. And you think that there aren't moments in rugby where the defence has to hold inches?! There are often long exchanges when the defence are literally camped on the try line. They don't lead with their heads in those instances because to do so would be idiotic. They probably would if they had helmets. Helmets absolutely cause these problems. Football players often literally lead with their heads. They would very quickly stop doing that if they weren't wearing helmets. It's that fucking simple
They don't change how they hit. They go with the shoulder. Always. Because there's absolutely no benefit in tackling with the head. There is literally no benefit in leading with the head. None.
Great comeback, I can see I'm dealing with either a real genius or a soccer fan. Don't worry we'll be there to bail out your part of the world out next time it gets into trouble. Cheers...Mate!!!
Just got done watching the Rio Olympic Soccer finals. I couldn't believe how many of those games ended in penalty shootouts. The low-scoring is one thing, and that's something I could grow to accept, however, there's something inherently wrong with the sport when so many games are ending by seemingly arbitrary means.
It was disgusting seeing all the flops. Nearly every Brazillian player went down faking serious injuriy on each foul. As someone who rarely watches the game, I felt bamboozled, because the first few times that happened I felt legimiately concenred for their health, only to find out I was being played, just like the ref. Americans hatred for soccer comes not because it's a "wussy" sport, but rather because it's a dishonest one.
I don't see any logic in that, for I can't see how you can imagine that everyone born 'must' somehow have a passion for sports, want or love to play sports, or just want to play and compete in the olympics just because 'Others do'. I am not the provoker, I was the provoked by the idiocy of the person who commented and being stereotypical, and YOU'RE provoking me to retaliate further by mere pitiful statements towards a sport, why my opinion in a joking-manner are important to you puzzles me.
@415jdookie sorry it was a typo I meant if you don't think its excited you must not have watched it properly and I don't watch baseball. I disagree with what you say about world cup, in South Africa it was just great to watch great teams play against each other and it was just a joyous occasion with great football being played.
@CMB3864 tactics i will probably agree with you that football requiers more but technically soccer requires way more you need to have a fantastic touch with multiple parts of the body strong enough to not get knocked off the ball have good field vision to be aware of your surroundings the right technique to cross, pass, and shoot the ball be fit to run up and down a 120 yard field for 90 minutes and you gotta be so versatile that you need to know how to play 10 other positions
I wasn't implying that the pace is slow from perspective of the player...I was referring to the perspective of the spectator. I know that sprinting is involved and that the players are tremendously athletic but so are baseball players...baseball involves sprinting and physical fitness but that doesn't change the fact that the game is very slow paced from the perspective of the spectator. Also, if you know not everyone appreciates ties or draws, why do you decry Jim Rome so much for saying that?
8 ways to improve socker: 1) Timeouts. Count backwards. 2) Coach's challenge/instant replay. 3) Bigger goal or play with TWO GOALS at the same time. 4) Improve the offsides rule like hockey did (or get rid if it?) 5) Red card results in 5-10 min suspension and no more. 6) All dives will be reviewed and if caught player receives penalty as if he commited the foul. 7) All penalties commited within the goal line should automatically be reviewed. 8) Delay of game is more objectively measured.
@DallasCowboysmx popularity, not to mention the thrill of seeing run with the ball, the excitement when a goal, and seemingly endless running going on, seeing guys sweat their heart out, and playing TOGETHER as a team. im a basketball fan, but frankly, football is still a beautiful game, and thats an argument..
Lmaooo this guy is hilarious.! "That's a quote by the way...that is awesome.! It is awesome &...it's predictable. I meam, if I was a soccer player...I would probably be thinking abt porn also on the field" ---- #Deeeaaatthhhh.!!!
Soccer: Two 45 minute halves with NO COMMERCIALS except during halftime. Sport is played worldwide so I can instantly strike up a conversation with a forigner about their favorite team/player. The majority of US population aged 20 and under have participated in a soccer league, but since america has soo many sports, there is hardly any money in it so they stop. And since the last worldcup, more coverage/highlights are being aired more often, IT IS GROWING!
@CMB3864 adequate punishment is given on occasion, with 3 match bans+ added to offenders of off ball incidents or incidents not noticed by the ref, well it happens in the premier league anyway, not sure about other leagues and how they manage
@zaneps151 and im not saying ronaldo is the only one who divesand im not saying diving doesnt happen either it doesnt happen nearly as often as it does in the past because like i said in my previous posts that refs are cracking down on divers and those players are looked down upon by fans and other players the players that get the most respect are the ones who play the game the way it should be, with heart, passion, and determination players hate diving from other players
Yes there is. If you score ONE goal more your team wins. In basketball the best games are won by one point or two. It really doesnt matter if in the end it stands 2:1 or 98:96. Because what you say counts for every sport.
@CMB3864 this video had clips taken from a brazilian league that no one watches the top leagues in the world from england, germany, spain, and italy dont have garbage like that in their leagues
@CMB3864 if it was bad officiating then they wouldnt have called it a handball but the thing you cant seem to understand is that if gyan made the pk awarded to him then ghana wouldve won and we wouldnt be talking about that right now and the reason they try to sell it is because if they dont the ref will just give them a yellow card and next time the actually do get hurt then they wont call it to set an example
@QueEsq1911 Yes! Thank you! Somebody speaks sense here! Of course, american gridie is the only sport in the world (well, popular sport) that promotes the most violent of physical actions. Of course they needed padding, because the rules kept on allowing tougher and tougher and tougher collisions. Rugby football stopped doing this and they don't wear padding, but american gridie kept on going and this is the reason padding is needed for professional matches.
Dude, California alone is as big as your entire continent. And I have been outside of the U.S., and loved when I came back home. Name me one other country that people want to immigrate to as much as the U.S.
in america they talk about how boring is soccer, most of the world those not talk how boring is baseball because they don't care, SOCCER is everywhere.
@ZONAZOMA I understand why you hate it. But you gotta understand soccer is hard ass game that's why they flop. That's why games end at 0-0 or 1-0. I'm not bashing the NFL or anything but the NFL is easy to score because you have to carry it with your both hands and zigzag and not use your foot. In Soccer you have to control the ball not only with your foot but with your head and your chest (when you receive it from air) and it takes months or not years master it.
@LUVFAMILIA If you're defence of soccer is that "it is played by a lot of people so it must be good"...maybe that's a sign that real arguments in its favour aren't very good.
In the USA, there is not a franchise team other then maybe the packers that actually reps for their own city. If you look at a team from D.C, NY or L.A - you wont really find playersfrom those cities playing on those teams. Soccer is different, even with globalism. A player from a city, will play for the cities pro team. its truly one city vs another. or one country vs another. truly representing that regions character, values, and identity.
Americans like soccer. It's just the stupid media that dont like airing soccer games because the game won't stop every minute and they can't air their commercials.
@QueEsq1911 Yes people forget that for the majority of the history of American football they didn't wear padding like they do today. Broken noses, bones, and concussions back then were an everyday thing. Even today retired football players don't live very long and have all kinds of physical problems because of the years they've taken being hit.
@Hakers6 can you actually name a riot in football? maybe there are in some parts of south america but i have a feeling thats more down to that area being highly volatile. there are very few riots in Europe and i feel that this is just a way for the US to undermine something. there is nothing greater than knowing you are competing against the world and i for 1 with that the US and Canada would get involved because they could bring a unique aspect to the game
And now Jim Rome LIKES soccer.
Truly a sign of the apocalypse.
american football is the only sport where you will see a 6'5 240 pound man running like a cheetah, best athletes in the world
"how very soccer of him" 😂
How very soccer of you. I've got to use that.
"Soccer is the reason to start using drugs"
Romie, you are the man!!
To all of you who thrash American football with the typical "arguments" like "breaks for commercials", "pads because they're scared", "a few seconds of action and 5 minutes of breaks", "stupid sport" etc. - you sound exactly like Jim Rome when he talks about soccer.

People like to hate on Rome, but they can't dispute what he says.....Jim Rome is 100 percent correct, soccer will always suck!
"who goes down like he was shot"
hahahaa
go jim rome! totally agree with him!!
AMERICAN FOOTBALL FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!
He is absolutely right about everything. Futbol is the only sport where the athletes make me feel manlier about myself. And before you start, I'm not even American.
***** I'm Finnish but granted, football doesn't seem to be THAT popular here either.
i couldn't agree more with you!!!!
It already gives me enough pleasure that everyone calls it soccer lol. At least they get that part and don't call it football anymore. It was annoying when they did because I always thought they were talking about the NFL. But at least this younger generation gets it. It's called SOCCER!

12yrs later 😂😂 legend
THIS GUY IS SO...SO STUPID....ITS UNREAL!!
You should watch a video called "John Cleese rants" or something like that. It's on the same level of stupidity and ignorance as this is.
jim rome speaks the truth
freaking hilarious. Rome is the best.
Dear Rome:
Make a world a better place, kick a racist soccer fan in the face!
Signed,
The Clones
Actually, a 0-0 game can be very entertaining. It's not just the goals that makes a match good, it's also the saves, chances, and the fans.
Why settle for 0-0 scores, when you can instead have the 24-17 scores in football, or better yet, 109-101 scores of basketball?
You know a touchdown is counted as 7pts right??? lol, which means 24-17 is actually 3-2 plus fieldgoals
It's more equivalent to like 3.5 - 2.5, which is a very important distinction, because you can win without scoring a whole point, something that's impossible to do in soccer. I dont think I have ever heard a more stupid idea about sport than this one. This is possibly the most oblivious and ignorant thing in the universe.
...best take ever
"how very soccer of you" hahaha
I play soccer all the time and I just think this is funny. People take this stuff too seriously, he's just an entertainer lol
Rome is a god.
soccer sucks!
Love it, thanks for putting these all together in one vid. good job!
10 years later, he invites Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan to his radio show.
He's on Network CBS now and getting paid more money. Gotta toe the corporate line when moving up. I do miss his earlier AM radio days in the 90s.
Taken out by some old guy in a bowling shirt. Lmao 🤣🤣🤣
America is such a great country. I do not understand why its people allow such idiots to pollute their media.
***** Mate, if American Football don't change quickly - hint: get rid of the helmets and learn how to tackle properly - soccer's going to take up a lot of the slack from parents who don't want their kids getting concussions.

"As if there aren't enough crack heads in soccer stands"(Rome). LOL.
Jim Rome sucks, but not as bad as soccer
"Soccer is the only sport where the refs are tougher the players"
Lol his prediction on soccer couldn't have been more wrong. It makes sense that he's now washed up.
Great comeback, I can see I'm dealing with either a real genius or a soccer fan. Don't worry we'll be there to bail out your part of the world out next time it gets into trouble. Cheers...Mate!!!

farfolomew Olympic soccer really isnt the best advert for the game tbh. Try and check out the Premier League.
Im Canadian and I find it funny to listen to him AHHA
LOL. This is so true.
@IMEPIICful id like to see one soccer player take a hit from ray lewis.
If soccer players are sooooo talented why can't they score a damn goal?
Only sport i scene where guys just drop dead on the field from heart attacks. Crazy.

@Santossaint andre johnson. 6'3 230. 4.43 forty yard dash. i really don't feel like doing the math but i think thats a little faster than 5 mph

@Zurrixia I'm a soccer fan but laughed alot with your comment

@sniperboy102
The guy in the video was very tired because once he was brushed on the shoulder, he went down.
This is great! hahahahaha so true
I fucking love soccer but this is just hilarious 😆😂
soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and the big mac is the most popular sandwich in the world. I REST MY CASE
......just to name about a DOZEN. hahahha
That is as close to reality as anyone can ever get!
Rome not only likes soccer, he likes women's soccer. Rome has fallen.
@zaneps151 and im not saying ronaldo is the only one who divesand im not saying diving doesnt happen either

ok I get it you guys like soccer but dont lie to me & say "soccer players are tough" they're not.
@CMB3864 this video had clips taken from a brazilian league that no one watches

Soccer makes Baseball exciting.
@zidanny5 This may be true, but us Americans have the luxury of having invented a bunch of other sports that are way better
I'm from Indiana, which makes me an American winner. Soccer is the best.
@QueEsq1911 Yes! Thank you! Somebody speaks sense here! Of course, american gridie is the only sport in the world (well, popular sport) that promotes the most violent of physical actions. @Alexvision07 basketball is a worldwide sport btw, 3rd most popular
Dude, California alone is as big as your entire continent. And I have been outside of the U.S., and loved when I came back home. Name me one other country that people want to immigrate to as much as the U.S.
Unfortunatley, soccer is #1 sports in most countries. go figure
Soccer respectively the real Football is the Worlds Number 1 Sport
It's that simple
in america they talk about how boring is soccer, most of the world those not talk how boring is baseball because they don't care, SOCCER is everywhere.
@ZONAZOMA I understand why you hate it. But you gotta understand soccer is hard ass game that's why they flop. That's why games end at 0-0 or 1-0. Goddamn. Give me this Jim back.
@LUVFAMILIA If you're defence of soccer is that "it is played by a lot of people so it must be good"...maybe that's a sign that real arguments in its favour aren't very good.
" soccer is gay "
that's one hell of a logic ,even deeper than Aristotle's
Jim Rome only takes the extremes of soccer.
@Einhander49 he was on George Lopez getting interviewed last week
I wonder if this guy ever ranted about all the murderers/criminals that play in NFL.. I somehow doubt that.
In the USA, there is not a franchise team other then maybe the packers that actually reps for their own city. Jim Rome absolutely rules
I can't even believe he works at ESPN after hearing that.
@TheMasterStrategist And where do you see that? The only sport with that much diving in it is swimming.
Like he got shot by sniper fire."How very soccer of you".
@knaankos yea thats like the first time in 10 years though.
Americans like soccer. It's just the stupid media that dont like airing soccer games because the game won't stop every minute and they can't air their commercials.
Jim Rome. The ultimate troll.
@QueEsq1911 Yes people forget that for the majority of the history of American football they didn't wear padding like they do today. Broken noses, bones, and concussions back then were an everyday thing. Even today retired football players don't live very long and have all kinds of physical problems because of the years they've taken being hit.
Savage
@Hakers6 can you actually name a riot in football? maybe there are in some parts of south america but i have a feeling thats more down to that area being highly volatile. there are very few riots in Europe and i feel that this is just a way for the US to undermine something. there is nothing greater than knowing you are competing against the world and i for 1 with that the US and Canada would get involved because they could bring a unique aspect to the game
Haha heperbud that fake joke was fuckin funny. Nice one man!
