Once Boulez did some lessons at our "Musikhochschule" and I was so lucky to talk to him...not only a great composer, conductor and writer (his essays about Debussy are the best I ever read and his essay about Beethoven is a poem) ...also a fantastic human being!
Well, Michael, you got him on his positive side. I had a different experience with him in NY. As for him being a 'great composer', his stance and compositional bias had their influence and time, but I feel very little 100 years hence (or even today) will have much actual performance or plaudits. Some of his conducting, tho' emotionally cool, did have its high points; Debussy being one in the Nocturnes...
