I have Robert's Bushtool - love it!... If ever I'm processing firewood by batoning with a smaller than 6" blade I make two wood wedges first, twisting and hammering on a knife handle is a sure way to tears! Love your videos btw. Keep them coming!
Absolutely! If one HAS TO baton (for some obscure reason) do it with something large enough to handle it (in my case a CD Trail Master), not a bushtool size knife. Even then, I like the idea of using those wedges after making a shallow cut with a knife. To baton a knife through a log would be, for me, a desperate last resort. I'd obviously not cut it in the Bushcrafters' Guild! In any event, I would usually have at least three knives (together with a folding (Silky) saw). As I said I'd have my Trail Master for heavy work, a bushtool size knife (currently the Victorinox Venture Pro has my attention), and a multi-tool knife (preferably a Victorinox Swiss Champ). This would be my "heavy carry". My "light carry" would be a CS SRK (sabre grind in CPM-3V) and a Victorinox Hercules. On "processing" firewood: if one is out in the woods, why would one cut off a chunk of a thick log and cut it up just for the purposes of burning it into ash? Why not just collect dead wood of different thicknesses and build your fire with that? Why make feathersticks anyway? If it's for fun, then that is a whole different ball game altogether. It's almost like carving spoons and cups - what the hell for? Titanium ones will last for the next 200 years, and weigh a fraction! Anyway, each to his own, and for those who do, have fun. @@RobEvansWoodsman people always gotta say something that isn't positive. It's a cracking knife, I mean any 3 3/4 inch continuous cutting curve has similarities to the next one but I would say your knife has a strong edge because of the bevel and and excellent heat treat but what would I know.
He does have a Utube channel. If you find the channel it will give his e-mail details. Rob put handles on two Russell-Dexter blade blanks for me, and made sheaths in kydex and leather. Excellent workmanship and a nice guy to chat to.
