It still baffles me how a machine of this size can fly. Respect to all the great minds putting this together.
I love watching the A380s take off from JFK. I would be sitting on the bay off runways 4L....to see an Air France A380 lift off...wow. it's moving so slow and seems to defy the laws of gravity and physics. Part of me is waiting for it to fall out of the sky (I don't want that, but that's what my brain is thinking )
And 60 or 70 years before the mighty 747 flew aircraft were made of string, wood and cloth.
Bernoulli's principle.
Honestly anytime I think of how impossible it should be i can't get myself to fly
I was thinking the same, there so big and heavy, like great biats how do they float
I'm a retired flight attendant. I flew there many times. The pilots saw this as a perk of the job. Plus...you have to take off hard and fast. Mountain in front of you.
oh how cool!!:>))
That's really cool 🤩
Thanks for sharing!
Hard and fast just like I like it

This doesn't get old. Beautiful plane! challenging airport, and crazy people having fun!! What a combo
they have to be careful though a girl tripped on the road and died because her head hit the border
I stood behind one of these at this airport (across the street, and was able to duck behind a car.) Exhilarating! Also got a free dermabrasion lol. This is a fun airport to watch.
That's your idea of having fun?
@@bigboymatthew7471 I read an old woman, in her sixties, lost her grip, her head hit the concrete and she died. I didn't know another person, a girl, also died this way. You have to hang on, its fun, but if you don't have the strength to hang on its not for you.
Those KLM 747s are the most beautiful planes in the world. Seeing them land and taking off on this Island is just frikkin awesome!!!
Yeah I was lucky to fly on one JFK to Schiphol, such a smooth flight.
I agree, they're the most beautiful of all
I bet those pilots never wanted rear view mirrors so badly.

Haha! ... lookalike a bunch of ants blown-away! 😁
What has fascinated me is that after all those countless takeoffs that happened there, there's still sand on that beach.
Has to do with the way the air flows. Just above the sand, the air flow = 0. Zero.
It's just a drop in the ocean, nothing more. 😁
If u only knew how far out the sand was 15 years ago m8 n imagin b4 dat the beach was way out i can remember as a kid going there
@@isabellind1292 Haha! I can bet!!!
Waves bring more sand into the beach. Crazy how nature brings everything into balance!
Nothing better than going to a tropical island and sit on a crowded beach with the sound and smell of jet engines. Crossing that off the list
These people are there precisely because of the jet engines. Some people, myself included, simply find it really awesome seeing 400 metric tons take off into the sky
There are plenty of other beaches around the island without this going on.
Good thing you aren’t there
Nothing beats the elegance of B747 .
its just so satisfying seeing how immensly powerful these jet engines are
They burn a gallon of fuel per second. Amazing!
Thrust and lift won't work for something that heavy without jet propulsion to achieve adequate speed. That law is amazing, and the intelligence to take advantage of it is truly God-sent. Wow!
I saw that mountain and wondered.

The greatest plane ever built. Flew at least 7 times on a B-747 from 1976 to 1985. Once in 1st class.
747 is a legend of the skies.

What a majestic plane - full of grace. When it slowly taxis to its runway, and takes turn around the bend - looks so elegant and masterpiece especially with that color. Boeing 747 is legendary and that hump makes it stand out as the best designed airplane of all time.
@Rogério Setúbal Peixoto peixoto I know right? What a shame it has to go down...
the hump shape design was from a playboy magazine that was left in laying around on the table of the design office and it was accidently left open to where chief designer noticed a pelvic hump shape on the centrefold model and the rest is history
We get it. You want to seduce the 747. Get a room my guy.
The Queen of the Skies. Lufthansa still uses 747-800 to SFO. Emirates rotates an A380 with a 777-300er to LAX
It's a extremely sexy hot plane! Very erotic!
I love how close that plane is to the fence when it’s positioned for takeoff
noticed that as well, that a huge craft to turn round, in that area. The 747' s are a beauty !! Sure that many people, over time, experienced some hearing loss. Can't imagine the force, prior to excelling down the runway, prior to rotation

loved those 747s. should still be in service and still manufactured. proven design and build.
didn't even know they stopped. but there are some still in service just not being manufactured
They basically got replaced by the a380 but definitely no where near as many flying now

I did this a few years ago, as the MD-80 was lining up to take off, the Co-pilot opened his window and cheered the crowed lined up on the fence! Thank you thanks guys!!, btw, i'm a flight student!!

Well these pilots are the type that cause air disasters by their flippant attitudes thinking it's fun & already there has been a death from this.

These pilots from InselAir had no mercy. 😂... They always did that... Trust it was always a show Everytime these guys took off... They always went out... I sure miss these guys 😌... I actually enjoyed the MD 80 more than the 747
I worked as a layout engineer at Logan Airport in Boston in the 1960s and back then airports were required to built blast fences to deflect the turbulent discharge when the pilots powered up the engines. These people could easily have been ensured by this. The noise alone could seriously damage their hearing.

The police have countless reports of severe injuries caused by the jet's blast.
Many tourists from around the world go to St Maateen to watch the Jets take off, and a young girl was blown into a concrete wall from the blast.
Regardless of the warning signs, people still take a risk to stand behind the jet as it takes off.

it amazes me that people put down their towels and belongings exactly where the jet blast is gonna be when an airplane takes off...
it amazes me that they build the runway right next to a beach, most of all that the planes take off with the engines facing the beach where they should have known people would gather.
the runway was built in 1964, i think the runway has higher priority than some clowns on a beach that weren't even sperm at the time it was built.

It's a miracle at all that planes this large can Land and Take off from an island as small as St Maarten.
People get blown away because they watch the planes take of right by the fence.
"people get blown away because they watch the planes take off right by the fence"
thanks for clearing that up Sandra. I never would've known that after watching this video...
KLM does not fly a 747 in there anymore. Reason is the plane is too heavy with loaded fuel tanks to take off. The runway is not long enough. When the 747 took off it had 1/2 full tanks and they flew to another island to refuel to make it back to Europe. KLM now uses a more fuel efficient Airbus to fly in and out. It can take off from that runway fully loaded and can go non-stop back to Europe. But it does not change the fact that it is very foolish to stand that close to jet blast. I read a few people die each year doing that. Very foolish.

Lived there for a bit back in the early seventies, nothing like getting sandblasted by these monsters!
Yes, I lived there in 2004 / 2005 / 2006 and I saw (grown up) people do that; holding the fence with their hands while their feet were in the air 😂 looked like fun
They did this for years and years. Was there right at this spot in '95. Not sure if they still do, but they would literally post the departure and arrival times on a sign nearby so you could watch the landings (very impressive as they go soooo low) and the takeoffs. Most all the jets produced a decent blast, but of course the real thrill was watching the 747 takeoff. Unfortunately, the last 747 flight was in October of 2016, and you can't see one landing or taking off there anymore. But it's still an amazing place to watch any plane land.
They definitely still do it.
I am sure the 777 with the largest engines has the stringer blast.
@@rampar77 Technically speaking.. yes.. if you were right behind one of the engines. But there a couple of differences. First, the 777 operates differently at St. Maarten. The 747 would hold position right at the end of the runway, spooling up all four engines blasting right at the fence. The 777 only has two engines, but more importantly for this situation, they don't hold and spool up.. they begin their roll, adding power and then taking off, so that by the time they are completely spooled up, they are already some distance down the runway.
