Holy shit, I might be alive when aliens are discovered.
It'll take like 4 or 6 years to get to Jupiter i guess? Or... Probably just about 2 years. So we're probably alive by that time.
*Unless...*

All systems go! *****'s Europa mission enters development phase; launch planned in 2020s. Info: go.nasa.gov/1Tvi0xR
a lot of effort; a lot of input; a lot of thoroughness and determination to bettering; a lot of time & energy
***** naive here, but there is NO way to insulate the space craft from the radiation? In 2015? I understand why we don't want to land there yet, but there has to be a better way that the 'sprinkler approach.'
MonkeyspankO ***** With sufficient shielding, mere mortals like you or I could relax next to a nuclear explosion. But when every kilogram you add to a spacecraft costs tens of thousands of dollars, reduces your probe's maximum velocity, and then forces you to try and send data back to earth through the interference of Jupiter's radiation... well, the sprinkler approach makes a lot more sense.
NASA don't bother. I live in Europe and yes we have liquid water and life here, too.
+Hodoss BUT, thery are'nt talking about Europe they are talking about Europa MOON OF JUPITER i've never seen a fool like you are you blind its even written in video
“ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS, EXCEPT EUROPA.
ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
USE THEM TOGETHER. USE THEM IN PEACE.”

Awesome stuff … can't wait to learn more … thank you … !
I feel pretty excited every time I watch this type of videos. Keep it up :)
I'm so hyped to see what you'll find!
Hopefully JPL can secure funding for a lander/penetrator mission. We need to explore!
Congress just overfunded the mission by over a hundred million dollars, on the condition that a lander be included. :)
+Isaiah Phillip You have documentation of them saying that? I just want to know if its happening with the backing of the peoples leaders.
KazzoKiller3890 Google it, it's part of the NASA 2016 fiscal year budget increase. They got overfunded more than a billion dollars. Congress explicitly directed the usage of most of that money.
Including $50M for a deep space habitat prototype.
And over $100M for a small Europa lander to accompany the clipper.
+oisiaa “All these worlds are yours, except Europa. Attempt no landings there.”
I'm actually sort of surprised that the Government is allowing NASA to do this. If they find life on Europa, imagine what it will do to Earth-centric monotheistic religions. Personally, I am beyond excited about this mission and wish it would do more. I'd like to see a probe land, collect water samples and look under the ice for more evolved aquatic life such as fish.
***** Absolutely nothing. People will just adjust the religions to compensate, as they always have.
***** If we do find organic materials in the water spurting from Europa, I do believe it would trigger enough enthusiasm in the scientific community, and hopefully the public, to trigger another mission immediately. If we do land a device onto Europa, drill in, and... take pictures with say, some kind of motion sensors, or lights, I don't believe we'll find fish. We'd probably see life forms so distant from us in evolution compared to us it would make our skin crawl... things so fucking strange, it would make the things at the bottom of our seas look "cute".
+QwertyuiopThePie That may be true but this discovery would be very hard for religion to compensate itself upon. I do believe as time passes we have less people falling for the idiocy of religion over what's natural. Especially if we discover alien life.
***** Or religious idiots will be like "Its fake, like the moon landing".
Brendan Feay Yeah I guess, it stuns me when they deny carbon dating. Why do they cling to imaginary being so much.
To me this is the most important and exciting expedition of NASA's entire existence.
Awesome video! I hope I'm still around when this mission disseminates its valuable information.
Couldn't the mission drop a probe into one of the plume openings? I know the plumes aren't always active but if they are it would so cool to get some more direct data. Who knows maybe the probe could access deeper parts.....
That's pretty cool!
CAN'T WAIT!!! THIS IS DIVINE. HUMANITY TAKING SCIENCE TO NEW LEVELS OF FUN!
Yes! I want to see this!
About time.
its been 7 years... any updates?
How far was the probe on the moment it took the picture of Europa's surface on 0:42 ?
aye its Robert ol buddy ol pal, I see you in every Europa video XD
I only watched two Europa
J'ai hâte de voir ça !!
How would you find life with flybuys?
when is this happening?
It will literally be a game changer if there is indeed life living in the oceans beneath the surface of Europa
This video made me thirsty..
Is europa really far away from the sun?
I'm waiting with insanely impatiently when this will happen.
when?
I have a feeling this well happen in my lifetime.
Europa forever!!!
Long live mother Europa!!
Europa for Europeans!!!
2021: Still no mission to Europa. Still counting!
Wow, let's go let's go let's go let's go!
I want to poop in that ocean. Then my poop germs will evolve into Europans and I will be the father of an entire MOON!!
actually blood of yours would be more useful for that, you know, organic cells
The good news is that this happening! The bad news for me is that it's not like the concept i had seen in earlier years of a robot that landed on the surface and melted ice until it reached the ocean and swim in the ocean sending video and pictures of it :)
Is it possible that the strange sounds recorded during the orbit of Jupiter from Europa because it is also belive that an alien-like creature lies beneath the sheets of europa
Is it this video or something wring on you tube. Why is the voice so soft and the music so loud?
Surely we can find life there pretty easily with a lander. If there is life in the ocean, water upwelling through the "tectonic" cracks must carry organisms with it where they will be frozen into the surface. In other words, that brown-orange gunk should have lots of organisms frozen into it.
Put a lander into a crack and start digging in the gunk. If there's life there, the gunk should be full of it.
Also, doing this does not risk contaminating the ocean.
Temos pressa em saber mais sobre o espaço, esperamos que todos os países que chegarem em qualquer planeta ou estrela nos ajude a entender o sentido da vida.
What happened to the mission where they would land there with a big drill to get through the ice and look for life in the ocean?
I was really looking forward to that..
I've never heard about this flyby mission without actually landing there..
Well that sucks, I was hoping to see some evidence for extra terrestrial life in my lifetime and that mission was my best hope.
This is partly to determine how best to accomplish that. The ice may be hundreds of miles thick - we need to find weak or thin points.
This make me want to play Kerbal Space Program.
we haven't even put a camera down lake vostok yet.
Imagine if Europa is actually an eye ball.. A Cosmic Symbiotic entity.. It would look right at our probe when we send it :)
Why has no one said anything about that space-horror movie based around Europa? It’s where a crew went to Europa and found this glowing light-thing that ate their camera! They then went around, lost all of the 6 members except for 3, then when the last 2 guys died, this chic opened the hatch and let in the alien! The alien was an octopus-like creature with 4 glowing indents in its head and I REALLY wanna know if that could be close to what an alien on Europa (if there are any) looks or reacts like! We love u NASA!!!
I truly believe there is life out there ...you go Nasa
NASA Going to Fishing!! On Europa!!! :P
Those lines could be roads😂.
Fantastic. I would rather missions to Europa, Enceladus, Ganymede than more mars rovers.
So does that mean the alien octopuses use the euro? 🐙 💶
If I️ live to see the video of under that ice, I️ will slap myself
Are we there yet?
hurl a synthetic diamond tipped- titanium javelin spear on the first pass followed a few 100 radiation powered nano drill cams on the second pass there has to be an ice penetrating attempt while your there, please. are there any inter galactic laws against chum fishing?
Destiny 2 an ice planet covered by a lot of aliens
I Really hope NASA will send the robotic squid to europa...
I always wonder why people keep asking if we are alone in the universe. The fact that we are here proves that it exists elsewhere.
Good information.I also feel like NASA.If alien come, what will we do?You detect what you think might be an intelligent alien signal coming from space. You are probably a SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) scientist. As such, the first thing you do is try to verify the signal by doing more observations and you “call” other SETI observers to try to get them to observe the same part of the sky at the same wavelength of light.
Calling in from 2019.. no mission yet to Europa
They didn't mention Enceladus. Enceladus is very similar and I feel would be better. They have already flown through the plooms of the geysers from Enceladus, and confirmed it was water. We know Enceladus has water and is active.
I think the Zuma payload launched was the lander\submersible to Europa. ;-)
What about titan?
I thought that 100 miles of ocean would be too big until I found out that the Mariana Trench is just short of 7 miles.
Why an orbiter? Is it not better to put a lander there, drill through the icecap and lower a submersible there, and just look around?
Okay, it could be habitable.. But what if there's a bunch of ancient alien monster beneath the ocean, under that ice surface??!
They need to fire a missle to break the surface of Europa and see if there is water
If they go, it will be another "Europa Report"
This video is awesome 🇺🇸👑💕 NASA jet propulsion laboratory is awesome 🇺🇸👑💕
fuck why wasnt i borned like year 3000 or something then id see whats going on in space
First priority will be to find aliens. Second priority will be to find out what they taste like.
*ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE*
Though Europa contain water, and life forms exist, due to the distance from the sun they might have been frozen or maybe not...
It almost seems like, to the naked eye, Jupiter's influence pulls anything and everything towards it. Could those trails on Europa be caused by small boulders moving along a semi-liquid medium towards the gas giant?
***** .. Those trails on Europa are massive .. few hundreds to few thousands of meters wide
***** It does. Just not as much as the moon. That's the reason we have spring and neap tides.
We need to study the Gas Giants and their satellites more often! Especially the Ice Giants, Uranus and Neptune and their satellites also! Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to fly by the Ice Giants once! We need a flagship, like Cassini to go to them! Triton is geologically active, and it was the last to be studied!
Congress wants to give NASA $19.3 billion next year.
Bruh she said my golly
Santana approved
...The origin of life must be pretty easy.
Imagine what we'll find, if you're right. I hope you are.
We have no idea how life started on earth but yet are confident that it has somehow also started on other planets, no matter how inhospitable. Seems a stretch to me, requiring a LOT of faith. If we knew of a mechanism for life to start, then we might have some faith that it could start elsewhere where initial conditions might be similar.
europa, hope they find notjing only bits of hard rocks and frozen water
Why does Jupiter have radiation?
Guywithcrazyideas Jupiter is basically an enormous betatron particle accelerator. Any particles entering its magnetic field are accelerated to even higher speeds, and thus energies. And due to the strength and size of Jupiter's magnetic field, it produces radiation belts that are orders of magnitude more powerful than Earth's Van Allen radiation belts.
Jupiter's magnetic field is the second largest object in the Solar System after the Sun's magnetic field.
While I'm grateful for the work that went into this plan, it just doesn't go far enough. We have been observing Europa long enough to be confident there is an ocean and very optimistic life is there. The public is aware. These flybys will yield miniscule information and boar a public that is ready to explore space in person. To guarantee further funding and the excitement of the world, this mission MUST include a device designed to melt through the ice and explore Europa's ocean below!! I think tax payers expect much more than instrument readings and high resolution photos of the surface. We know NASA has been developing devices to melt or drill through miles of ice, expressly for exploring Europa. We want to see what is in Europa's ocean and wasting money doing anything else will generate little excitement in the public and not help gain future funding. If nothing else, redesign this mission to include launching an interior probe. There is great momentum for outer space exploration, so this is a good time to be ambitious.
Uropa = scariest looking planet
full of life get there soon
So júpiter has its own goldylock zone? 🤔
How ironic most scientists always has answers to everything but yet they never have the evidence to back it up
LETS LIGHT THIS CANDLE AND GO!
I mean at the same time it is unsafe because asteroids are pulled by Jupiter because of its high gravitational force, and it’s a moon which has a high chance to get hit by one since it’s near by.
I usually avoid referring to Sci-fi films when we're talking about REAL science, but the optimistic tone of this video reminded me of a speech written by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick in a key scene from "2001: a Space Odyssey." The scene take place in a briefing room on the moon base. The Heywood Floyd character refers to the absolute secrecy involved in keeping news of the monolith found on the moon, of a cover story being concocted in order to keep people from coming or going from the base. I thought it was a good speech in which it's made clear how announcing the existence of life off Earth has to handled very carefully:
"Now I'm sure you're all aware of the extremely grave potential for cultural shock and social disorientation contained in this present situation, if the facts were prematurely and suddenly made public without adequate preparation and conditioning."
With NASA openly talking about the possibility of discovering some sort of life on Europa, I think they're taking the smart course in getting us expectant, rather than nervous, about what might be here, within our own solar system.
TheStockwell It should be noted that the 2001 scenario specifically referred to 'intelligent life off the Earth'. If we find any life in Europa's waters, it will probably be basic microscopic stuff. Microbial mats at the most, but who knows.
FubakaNG I'm not getting myself ready to exchange shortbread recipes with the multi-gilled inhabitants of Europa. I'll be more than happy to settle for a speck of organic matter. A smattering of bacteria would be fine.
Even if nothing turns up, it's still thrilling how this exploration even happens.
Lochness monster in Europa
I hope that the spacecraft uses ion or solar sail propulsion (Or both) to get it to Jupiter really fast.
+legoclone09
Hi! I didn't know you made videos, btw, when are you making more?
David K I don't know, I'll try out this spaceplane I made a few months ago and forgot about it.
R.I.P. Claudia Alexander.
So there will be no lander? All those years for another flyby mission? If we want to find out if there is life on that moon we need a lander, not a flyby.
These flybys would be pretty great, but can we really be sure without actually landing on Europa? Radiation should not be as strong on the planet, correct? It seems like that would produce much more information. Perhaps NASA just doesn't want to engineer another landing... I'll have to start a company and do it myself.
she said "by golly" tihi
I know how we can drill into europa's ice
The most exciting thing in the future when we see a video under this water
Seaman83 It's probably going to be pitch black.
Phil Mitchell then we need to many lights :-)
Seaman83 LED's
+Patrick ` You need to put your tin foil hat back on before you start having rational thoughts
+kernalrom Well said.
