      Dear Bill, I need a resin that will resist deformation in direct sunlight. I’m making a sort of emblem/badge for a car but I need it to be clear and I don’t have any experience with resins or casting for that matter. I was wondering if Smooth Cast 325 would be suitable for my application or is there something else you recommend?

    Great video as always Bill! It may be beneficial to your viewers to touch on safety precautions while using urethanes, especially in enclosed spaces. Also, I know of several people who found out the hard way that they were allergic to resin because they weren't wearing gloves while casting. Always good to encourage proper handling of chemicals, have fun without hurting yourself!

    Awesome video for a noob like me! At 7:00, you said a good mold should last about a dozen times. What if I need a mold to last hundreds of times? What materials for the mold can be used instead?
    Context, I'm pouring a clear, flexible 2-part PU onto custom shaped flexible LED strips and need to create walls around the edges of the LED strips to keep the PU from running down the sides.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  4 роки тому +4

      If you're lucky you can get a lot of pulls like that, but it all just depends. If you're pouring something flexible then you'e more likely to need a rigid mold, in which case concrete or something similar might be more what you're looking for, and also typically lasts longer.

    Thanks for the video! I've tried Smooth On Onxy Slow but on multiple pours, its coming out almost with a stiff rubber like cure. I wanted stiffness similar to what an ABS plastic would be. Got same results with another manufacturer. Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong to mess up the cure? Would they need to be heated during cure? Should it be mixed and poured at a certain room and product temperature? Any advice much appreciated.

    Great tutorial 👍 but one thing remains unclear even after a few replays, so I'm hoping someone can advise..?
    So, after filling the mold you talk about putting it in the pressure pot and apply 60psi ambient pressure to the outside so that any remaining bubbles in the resin would compress to micro size.
    However, later on (5:10) you come back to the pot to retrieve the mold and you comment that it's now time to release the vacuum from the pot.
    So what was it during those cure hours? pressure or vacuum?

  • @williamh-ii3236

    You talked about tinting to change the color, have you ever tried painting the inside of the mold and then pouring the resin in over the wet paint to color the casting? I have heard people talk about doing that before and I'm curious how well it works.

    • @punishedprops

      I do use a respirator! At the time I didn't have a pressure pot, so bubbles would sometimes happen. Now I use a pressure pot even if I don't have to because I can! But most molds are okay without a pressure pot - it depends entirely on how the mold is set up.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 років тому +1

      You can absolutely paint the final product! Tinting the resin an help in a few ways: it provides a base color so if paint rubs off or is chipped you don't have bright white or some other color showing underneath. It can also save you a lot of time to tint the resin rather than painting, but you can totally paint it too.

Of course the problem is the products you use aren't available at all in Latin America. I'm doing my research on finding equivalents or substitutes but information is confusing. Resin curing creates an exothermic reaction, so it gets VERY hot. Your mold is probably not the right material to use with resin and because of that it melted.

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 років тому

      More dye will make the color darker, but remember that the resin cures bright white, so the final color will always be diluted with white. That's why you can get "color match" resins that are mostly clear and don't dilute your dye colors. SmoothCast 325 is a good example.

    Could you please do some tutorial on polyurethane rubber props? can polyurethane rubber liquid be slush cast as urethane resin?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 років тому

      It depends on the rubber and the type of prop. I'd head over to the Smooth-On website and check out their tutorials! They have TONS of great info on different materials. I haven't done much work with urethane rubbers myself.

    I made a face with WED clay and I planing to put on the wood and hanging to the wall. Somebody told me that sculpture will be fall and broke. Is that true? Is so, what can I do? Is there any product to seal the clay and be protected for cracks?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 років тому +1

      I don't have much experience with WED clay, but I've mostly seen it used to sculpt a master that is then molded in silicone so that rigid, resin copies can be made of it.

    i am wondering if you can use it as a glue to join two urethane resin pieces toghther to make a permanent bond of two pieces since some pieces need to be molding seperately?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  5 років тому +1

      You CAN, but you want to make sure it's the same kind of resin and make sure you do it soon after casting the pieces. You'd also need to rough up the surfaces you're gluing together, and you'd probably have a good bit of sanding and clean up.

      A common material for casting silicone parts is an epoxy/fiberglass mold. We haven't done one yet, but that's how they do it at Immortal Masks: ua-cam.com/video/NVws0ryS3-E/v-deo.html

      Most resins are quite hard once cured, it'll just take some experimenting to figure out which one you like best

    Can you cast urethane to cured urethane or would you need to use adhesive ?

    • @punishedprops
      @punishedprops  6 років тому

      Once the urethane has fully cured a fresh batch of urethane will not fully bond to it. You can sand the surface of the cured urethane to get them to stick together better, but it would be best to let everything fully cure and then glue the parts together.
