    Fun fact: neurologically migraines are distinct from headaches. I get so many more symptoms than my head hurting. Constantly hungry, thirsty and tired. Language and motor aura too. Sometimes I get horrible pain too, but they just feel totally different.

    • @valaya.3
      @valaya.3 3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, I remember looking it up, trying to figure out if my headache was really a headache or if it qualified as a migraine. I found that sensitivity to light is a major symptom of migraines--but I have often experienced that in a minor way. It's not fun, but most migraines I have experienced are not debilitating. But I guess I understand what she's saying. It feel a lot less inclined to physically do anything when doing makes the pain worse, but I am lucky in that it is, most often, bearable. I haven't paid attention to whether I experience symptoms like that, though

      I honestly love that my boss lets me take days off when I have migraines because just everything is awful. For me it feels like someone is actively stabbing my eyes, ripping my eardrums, and drilling a hole in my scalp/neck. I also get headaches but I can just change gears and come back to complex work if i get a headache. Can't do that for migraines either I sleep or I die.

      Yes! I’ve had a few times where my migraines have caused heightened dizziness, anxiety, inability to rationally think, and even blindness!! The blindness is the scariest.
      My headaches however just hurt and slightly make me grumpy, and are way easier to tame down.

    when i was in the 7th grade my aunt stole my mickey mouse (the one my dad gave me when i was 4) and said that “i’m too old to sleep with a stuffed toy” WHILE I WAS ASLEEP and lied to me saying she threw it away. i found it a year later in her room in her SHELF full of stuffed toys and when i confronted her she laughed and said “oh i was just kidding”
    that stuffed toy was my safety blanket that helped with my anxiety during tough times.

    One of the best protagonist/antagonist stories that I can think of is from Anime "Death Note" it is a classic at this point. There were some episodes in Bones where they never found the bad guy, even as the most incredible forensic science team. They also had a few different reoccurring bad guys. From a serial killer who buried people alive to a tech genius who became obsessed with the team and killed multiple people. Both of those spanned throughout a season which was cool.

    On the musical note: I am someone who enjoys musicals a lot but totally get why others don’t. For me there’s some element of nostalgia (I did theatre growing up and have been in ~13 or so productions) but for me musicals are just easy to follow. I have never been good at watching movies because I have trouble paying attention and understanding what’s going on. I love music and did music for years growing up so it’s much easier for me to follow. Musicals feel like a more accessible movie format to me. I can watch a long production and follow the plot whereas with a traditional movie I’m lost within the first 20 minutes.

    • @bean0329
      @bean0329 3 роки тому +6

      I feel like many people who don't like musicals also only think of the Lion Kings and the Mamma Mias, when there are musicals that span a wide range of tones, subject matter, and amount of songs actually being sung. My best friend never understood why I loved musicals until I sat her down to watch Hamilton a few years ago, and then more recently, Hadestown and Six. To me, all of these are very far in tone from what a lot of people who don't watch them think musicals are. However, I do understand that many people might just find singing in the middle of a plot to be distracting.

      Yes! I’m a theater kid and the whole comment about all theatre music sounding the same rubs me the wrong way. One of the beautiful things about MT is the fact that they do have distinctly different sounds. But I generally prefer live musicals to movie musicals, so I understand why the general population doesn’t “get” it

    On the topic of migraines:
    When I was a kid (10yo-16yo range) I would get intense migraines semi-regularly, like once every 2 months. These were debilitating and i had an intense pounding in my head if I wasn't in TOTAL darkness and little noise. I remember screaming and constantly moaning in pain when I had my first migraine. And closing my eyes wouldn't be enough because light can still be perceived when your eyes are closed. So in school, I would call to go home but my mother told me to just deal with it. Luckily I had 2 teachers who I was fairly close with and they would let me stay in their classroom during their prep time so that I could lay my head down with the lights off.
    I can imagine it being way worse for others who have migraines, I also get irked when people call their headaches migraines because you can't just resume normal activities and push through the pain. My migraines would bring me to tears with the pain and would have very sharp pains if any light crept through my line of sight. When I was home I would have to lay in a dark, SILENT room with a warm folded cloth over my eyes to dim out any natural lighting. Longest mine would last was about 18 hours give or take at a time. Sleeping/napping was the only way I would get through it. But that was only my experience, I'm just lucky it didn't indicate anything severe medically.

    I have a few stuffed animals, most from when I was younger and can't bear to part with them. I don't usually sleep with them but sometimes I do if I'm feeling uneasy or having trouble sleeping (or on a rare occasion where I feel nostalgic.) It's soothing somehow, I think it works as a cue to go to sleep for me because it reminds me of being younger and not being as stressed.
    I'm have ADHD and anxiety and I think in my case it may also relate to my neurodiversity. I do find holding a stuffed animal tends to stop me from fidgeting in bed while trying to go to sleep. I think the anxiety also makes me more prone to feeling stressed out when going to bed and the ADHD keeps my mind buzzing even when it's late, which makes cues and soothing things like having a stuffed animal relaxing.
    It reminds me of sharing the bed with my partner, not as much the feeling of security-safety, but the grounding effect. People with ADHD tend to take well to body doubling, which is when you're around someone doing something (usually a nondistracting task), like drawing, reading/writing, folding laundry, etc., and that helps you stay focused on your task. It's the same reason why people enjoy study groups: if your mind wanders, the presence of that other person helps anchor your brain to stay focused. They're don't even have to be doing the same task, they read while you clean your room and you could experience the impact of body doubling. For me, sleeping beside my partner helps my mind relax; holding a stuffed animal while trying to sleep also provides some of the same body doubling effect.

    Migraines can be extremely serious and life altering. I’ve suffered from abdominal migraines on rare occasion and hemiplegic migraines on a more regular occasions. Abdominal migraines are the most painful things I’ve ever experienced. Hemiplegic migraines make an entire half of my body go numb, the first time I experienced one I thought I was having a stroke. I’ve had to miss labs because it’s genuinely not safe for me to be handling chemicals while half of my body is numb. It’s scary to half to deal with, especially when you can’t pinpoint a cause

    Yeah, I've had both regular headaches and migraines. My migraines have been more mild lately as it's been mostly just light sensitivity. When I was younger though I got them and I would need to take a painkiller and basically hide in bed for hours. All light just hurt and I remember being in so much pain I'd cry and constantly ask my Mom for help. She'd try to massage my head but there wasn't much I could do other than just try to sleep it off.
    Now I don't get them often and mostly it's been regular headaches if anything. Migraines are definitely a different monster.

    As far movies go, I think Star Wars Rogue One is a good example of a film without an inherently happy ending, everyone dies and it makes perfect sense and really hammers home that the deathstar plans were gained “at great cost”. I’m also thinking about Sound of Metal not sure if that counts because it’s not sad but it definitely isn’t a fairly tale happy ending either, more like a balanced reality.

    The topic of more villains winning just made me think about Frozen, because they originally were going to have Elsa be the villain in the movie. However, when Let it Go was recorded, they changed it so that she was a protagonist. It’s always interesting that the villains in classic stories can’t have an amazing talent or song or moment, but instead they must always be worse than the protagonist...

    A migraine is not actually just a headache. It's a neurological event closer to a seizure. The intense headache is a symptom, but it can also include nausea and throwing up, vertigo, and visual distortions among other things. As someone with chronic migraines and headaches I totally agree with that. I hate it when people say they have a migraine when it is just a headache. Not that headaches aren't horrible on their own, but major headaches are NOT the same at all.

    I agree with the UA-cam ads case but in my experience, it’s the repetitiveness that makes it bad marketing. Even if I was interested in your product the first time I saw the ad, it just keeps on coming and I see it again and again and again until I eventually hate it. For the endings where the protagonists lose, I'd like to point out a book I just read recently: "They Both Die At The End" by Adam Silvera. In this universe, everyone is notified the day they will die. The story is about two 18/17-year-old boys who receive their death call on the same day and reach out to each other to become death day friends (and eventually end up becoming more than that). The two boys experience their last day together going through growth and dealing with pain from their losses in life. As the title says, they die at the end of the book, but the story, the theme, and their character growths are resolved. It's an excellent read. Definitely made me cry. And the protagonists lost to the antagonist/villain (death).

      Spoilers: Oh, the Thor movie where Asgard is destroyed could be another example. The recent Blair Witch game's true ending is bad for the protagonist. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity ends with all the champions dying and Ganon taking over. Tsubasa Chronicles ends with a net loss I'm pretty sure. I guarantee that there are a lot more stories which end with the protagonists losing. They're probably hard to find.

    On the topic of claiming a headache as a migraine, it's extremely frustrating when I mention my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and people say "I'm so OCD too." I don't see many people talking about how wrong that is, because the same thing happens with other anxiety disorders, and even depression. I've heard Ben use OCD as an adjective in passing and I just wish more people knew the difference between being type A and having a disorder like OCD.
    .
    Anyway love the podcast!

      I feel it’s slightly different from OCD. Migraines have an extremely wide range of symptoms. I’ve had horrible migraines but I’ve still had to act like nothing was wrong.
      With OCD is much more incorrectly used.

    the musical one, i think as someone who works in the theatre industry i definitely find musicals that are turned into films don't have the same pacing/flow as you tend to find on stage. there's something very specific about the way that western theatre has been set up to encourage the suspension of disbelief that allows ppl to accept ppl singing on stage, that just doesn't usually come through in a movie version.
    that being said there are definitely some musicals that don't work cause the playwrights, in my opinion, just throw music at a weak story to try and make it better

    Black Panther is my favourite Marvel film for many reasons, but one of them being that the bad guy ends up winning the moral argument, and T'Challa decides to honour the idea of sharing knowledge and resources with the rest of the world (but of course does it in a much more ethical, less violent way). I really appreciated the nuanced story-telling despite it being a superhero movie. As for the migraines, I have near-daily migraines and have not been able to work for over 4 years as a result. They are debilitating, brutal, and my quality of life is poor as a result of them. I also have PTSD. I do get very frustrated when people (typically young people) throw out those terms when they just have a headache or a minor frustrating experience. I am constantly not believed for my invisible disabilities, don't make it harder for people like us, please.

      This actually happened to my friend with anxiety whilst watching 'A Star is Born'. She knew nothing other than that it was a musical with Lady Gaga, so the: (tw)
      -
      Suicide gave her a panic attack. I do wish more stories diverted from standard narratives, but I don't think giving everything a bad ending would help that much.

      If it's out of Hollywood the suspense isn't there because the hero will always win. The closest I can think of is Ronin, where the girl/love interest is kidnapped to be killed and life just goes on for the secondary hero.

    So agree with you for being reasonable about encouraging self acceptance... Nothing wrong with acknowledging you're worthy of the love and respect that you would want for those close to you - and that you're complete without receiving validation from the people who don't share it freely. Too many people grow up receiving messages that they are only as good as the value they provide to someone else and that they don't have any value on their own.
    Self-acceptance unlocks potential because you feel capable of following your ambition - it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to improve your talents or interpersonal skills or whatever else. If you believe you're not good enough to ever succeed, you won't. You are "perfect" because you are "whole," and you have value by virtue of being a human being, not because you've reached your peak and don't need to try anymore.
    Also, support small businesses and amazon alternatives if you can and want to! :) But you don't need to shop at a local store if you don't need/want their product or service, or if you can't afford it.

    I'm studying psychotherapy and recently did a module on addiction, and the reality is, people turn to addiction because of trauma and abuse. It's not like people think "oh smoking looks so Kool so I'm going to become a smoker". Similarly with harder drugs, when you look at the addicted population, stress and trauma is a huge factor. So addiction is a product of capitalism and the general mainstream abuse that our society has built in it. And it's important to consider that both legal and illegal drugs up make up supporting pillars of many economies. If we are seriously talking about fighting addiction, as Ben said, we need to treat is as a health issue. But also, we need to start dismantling the systems that abuse people into becoming addicts.

    During our hard lockdown in South Africa, the government imposed a cigarette and alcohol ban. So people couldnt buy anymore alcohol or cigarettes anywhere legally so people started bootlegging alcohol, making their own beer and people were forced into sobriety because the black market alcohol that people were selling was just so insanely expensive, like maybe double, triple the normal price. And only really shitty cigarettes could be found at like also double, triple the price for a box. And the funny thing was, the smokers fought back with a lot more vigor than people that wanted booze. Like the cigarette people started lawsuits and claimed it unconstitutional while the alcohol people were a lot quieter

  • @donghyucksmom2413
    @donghyucksmom2413 3 роки тому

    The problem is not really that villians never win, it's that they most of the time have zero impact.
    Like it all starts with "oh no! Villian is so powerful and undefeated! How can we ever win??!!" But no hero/good character ever dies, so this very powerful villian doesn't really holds up to the image. I guess that's why people love GoT, Harry Potter and the latest Avengers movies - no, the villian doesn't win but beloved characters do die and the build-up to darker times is done so nicely while most movies/shows rush through it even though they are set to produce more seasons/movies.
    Also, producers/writers are getting too influenced by what fans ask (or should I say demand?) and are afraid of backlash

      It's literally been proven that criminalization of drugs has been ineffective as a strategy to deal with addiction, in fact if anything it's made it worse. You don't help addiction by making the substance illegal, you get to the root of the addiction. The trouble is governments tend to go for bandaid solutions, which is why the criminalization of drugs happened in the first place.
