She was fueling Anxietys delusions. Her role was keeping her motivated by incentivating Riley envy
This! I feel like her going along with Anxiety's plans and having immaculate playoff with her gave people the impression that she was just a mini Anxiety or is just there just to be cute and for merchandizing. Which completely misses the point of her character
Exactly. Everybody dismisses her but don’t realize she was the ambition that fueled anxiety. The second the plan went sideways she tried to stop because it wasn’t headed to what Riley actually aspired.
Like wanting what Riley's friends have and fuel Anxiety to get the things she wants.
@@justafellow2765i agree with your point, but i think this may be due to how close envy and anxiety is, envy represents a good type of envy or something called benign envy which causes people to invest more effort to be as successful as the other person, this probably fuels anxiety to do what she does because she is worried what would happen in the future if she does not achieve this goal, being honest tho she is basically a mini anxiety throughout the movie but she still has a role nonetheless.
That is until Anxiety went TOTALLY *NUTS.*

@@klooks1013I think Envy was bringing out Riley’s lowkey true desires in this movie. Like wanting to hangout with the popular kids, wanting to be good enough to make the team. I think she represents that kid we all have inside us that just wants to fit in and feel special like everyone else.
I like her but she's not envious. She should have been called Adoration or something.

I love how Envy is basically "what if Disgust tried too hard and too much to be cool." She's pretty much Disgust's little sister mainly by their introduction.
There's a very important distinction between Envy and Jealousy.
Envy is looking at someone and saying, "I like what you have. I would like one for myself." It encourages you to be a better person by looking at the better traits of other people and saying, "I want to be more like this person I admire." which encourages growth and ambition in a healthy way.
Jealousy is more personal. It's looking at someone and saying, "I like what you have, and *_I hate you for having it instead of me."_* Jealousy is toxic and grows into resentment, anger, and bitterness, and can lead people to take drastic actions to get what they want or spite people who they think have what they deserve.
Really? I kinda thought it’s like, the opposite if that makes sense
I thought Envy is about destroying what’s good about someone in order make yourself more superior, and feed on the target’s misery to fuel the envious person’s satisfaction.
At least that’s what I heard, I learned that from a video about it as one of the 7 deadly sins, tho I could be looking at the wrong source. Correct me if I’m wrong!
I think jealousy is when you perceive someone as a threat to something you have, like your bf getting close to a girl and you think he might like her you get jealous

I like how they quickly got rid of all the previous memories and you only see memories in the colors of Indigo, Pink, Orange and Cyan.

I don't understand the criticism that "Envy was Pointless", I suppose that's the consequence of her and Anxiety having immaculate play off from one another. But I personally think she had an important albeit minor role, she feeds into Anxiety and vice versa
Envy's role definitely is as important as much as Anxiety. Think about it, when Val offered Riley an energy bar, Envy opposed, but Anxiety persuaded her and saying that they need to like what she likes, and Envy's whole thing is that she wants to be like the others. Envy saying “we need hair like that!” at the beginning and then Anxiety later giving Riley the idea to dye her hair like Val’s to fit in. When Anxiety made Riley get up to take the notebook, she hesitated but Envy encouraged her. Envy is usually the first one to point out the desired goal and Anxiety works to attain it with Envy reinforcing it at times. Both of them share the same goal, they don't want Riley to fall behind
While Embarrassment helped Sadness and Ennui couldn't care less, Envy was there to support Anxiety. It speaks out how these two emotions play a big role in how you feel like you lack in something, lack satisfaction with yourself. So even though Anxiety doesn't let Envy form the sense of self, a part of her impact is still there. They play into each other really well and that’s the whole point, Envy is supposed to be subtle because Anxiety takes so much control, but Envy still has a lot of input
Anxiety is a person who dares to think and do, and Envy supports her wholeheartedly. These two are really compatible, meaning that every time something interesting comes up, they will immediately turn to look at each other. A match made in heaven that truly support each other. And there is another small detail that I find very interesting, is that Envy was also the first one to jump in to try and stop Anxiety when Riley was having a panic attack
Just cause she had less screentime doesn't automatically mean she offered nothing to the plot, cause she most definitely did albeit subtle. Their roles are just as big as each other
Yess I saw when she tried to stop anxiety, I could tell that in the beginning the movie anxiety was almost an inspiration to envy, similar to Riley and Val, but as the movie progressed they became good and genuine friends

People have been talking about Envy not being envious. Envy was envious by wanting to fit in and admiring people which is why she is more energetic as she is wishful and is admiring people while looking for acceptance. It's different from how we normally depict envy being more cynical and withdrawn. It also funny cause she is very hopeful and gets jealous, which is depicted fantastically in the movie.

Envy feels less like Envy and more like ambition, or want. It’s the feeling of wanting more of what you do or don’t have.

There's more to Envy than just resentment and sadness towards others, and Envy isn't inherently a bad thing. At it's core it's a want and a longing for things you feel you lack, and that can be really helpful motivation for improvement and to attain what you want. The envy we see represented is the envy barely anyone talks about or even knows about, which is benign envy. Malicious envy is the one people often associate envy with, but envy isn't malicious in a vacuum. Also Jealousy isn't related to envy, jealousy is simply fear or anger towards someone or something taking away what you value
The whole point of envy is being ambition for Riley’s anxiety which caused her to act irrationally
