Here is a bit of advice regarding work e-mails, told to us at work by one of the company's attorneys - always write each and every e-mail as if it will be read aloud in court to a cranky judge, and angry jury, with your mom in the audience. Need to send a fun/humorous e-mail at work? Make sure it in non-political, non-religious, non-sexual, not cruel, not degrading, and never, ever, ever talking smack about a coworker.

Something like this happened at the large research university I worked at and it paralyzed the entire email system for several hours. I was relatively young (20s) at the time. I remember thinking how incredible it was that all these people who worked for this institution of science and higher learning failed to realize how their attempt to stop the problem or comment on it was making it worse with every email. Realizing that I understood this while so many people with more education and standing than me didn't gave me a nice ego boost.

Upper corporate sent an email to the entire corporate staff, over 100,000 people, that was meant for about 10 people. Everybody tried to privately reply "I don't think this is for me?" but it automatically replied to everybody. Jammed the system and we couldn't work for over 12 hours, by 1:00 PM people were replying in all caps yelling "Don't reply to all", "Stop emailing me, who are you?", "GO LAKERS!", etc. - It was a freaking nightmare, I finally left at 3:30, it wasn't fixed until 11AM the next day. I worked in escrow at a title company. Ridiculous delays due to inadequate tech support.

I'd have probably done the same with my favorite sports teams, one by one, "GO (AZed) CARDINALS!", then next email, "GO RAMS!", then next, "GO BATTLEHAWKS!" and so on, just to offend everyone, and probably get terminated for sending more emails than anyone else, but it'd be hilarious

2:30 This is why "Reply All" should be at least a two-stage process with manual confirmation. :)
As to the use of the term "pork": I would have said something like, "I'm so gonna bacon-lettuce-and-tomato you later!" Be classy! ;)
8:11 "I'd appreciate it if in the future you'd let everyone decide on their own whether or not Pete is a f*ckwad." OKAY ... And, that boss owes me a coffee and a keyboard.
8:29 TBF, if you've had a litter of kittens dumped on you, it's an emergency, and company protocols should take that into consideration! (Obviously do NOT adopt-out kittens too early--check with your vet if you're unsure! )
18:37 Oh, yeah. The "voluntary" contribution to charity. In the 1980's I worked for a bank and the United Gouger's Fund campaign was on. I was fully willing to contribute until I found out that the contribution wasn't voluntary. Wound up rage-quitting that hell-hole of a job because management had the unmitigated gall to try to strong-arm me. Eff 'em. Eff 'em where it hurts. I don't think this bank even exists any longer. Good.

I did one of those once. For our annual Christmas dinner we had to RSVP with our dinner selection. A coworker of mine didn't have an email account setup, so I replied on his behalf. Initially I jokingly wrote "I'll have the turkey (or whatever it was). Ryan will be there, but he won't need dinner. He'll just be getting drunk." Glad I didn't hit send on that one.

Not really cringe-worthy, but back in the 00s I saw the entire internal email system of the large insurance company I worked at completely paralysed for a day, to the point where IT had to use sorcery or something to fix it, because an email went out to a large mailing list and someone decided to Reply All. A number of other people then decided to inform them that they shouldn't have hit Reply All, but the way the system worked replying to a Reply All also resulted in a Reply All. Then MORE people tried to let everyone know that they should stop using Reply All... you get the idea. Carnage, but also hilarious.
I was the source of the original email. I can't even remember what it was about but only that it was something completely routine.

When someone accidentally sent a test email to over 1 million NHS staff nationwide. I remember seeing the email and shrugged it off as Junk Mail. Shortly afterwards, it came through again ten times. I asked my colleagues if they were receiving this test email. They said no. Next thing we knew, the emails were coming in their hundreds. It was 8AM and the day hadn't even started yet. It wasn't just the test email being sent again and again, there were some staff hitting Reply All asking everyone what the heck was going on. The system crashed and we could no longer open it. Thankfully we were still able to work on the main patient record system. But the problem was that most of our work involved accepting new electronic referrals via email and responding to patient email enquiries. It took almost the whole week to calm down because lots of people were hitting Reply All and restarting the chain. I went to Twitter and saw lots of staff making jokes about the whole ordeal and someone even went out of their way to make a parody Twitter and LinkedIn account for the "sender". The joke being that the "sender" had no connections. It got so bad that it was all on the news. Rumours went around about what the cause was. Whether it was someone that messed up big time on the job or it was an attempted cyber attack. I kept the original email as a "souvenir".

I work at a bank, one that is fairly sizable. Occasionally our HR department or whoever's in charge of events will email the entire bank about opportunities for free tickets to events the bank is sponsoring. There is always a woman who hits "reply all" saying "Thank you, I need x amount of tickets for me and my family." Every. Single. Time.

So I work in education. A kid sent an All Staff in District email, I like tacos. This was 8 years ago and considering that no one knows how long everyone had the ability to send all, it's tremendously funny that is all this kid did was that. Now that ability is restricted to a special AD group that you are moved into and automatically removed from after 10-15 minutes. Not even the superintendent can send all. It's terrifying when you're new and that ticket comes across your desk.

I periodically receive emails meant for someone else who lives in another city (same last name). Got an email from a lawyers office one day with some very confidential documents attached. Emailed the person back to tell them to check the email address properly next time and I received a very threatening email back from the secretary. All I thought was “oh hell no bitch”, I was just trying to be helpful and nice.
So I contacted my Great Uncle, who was the head of the Bar association for that province at the time (they didn’t know who they were fucking with). I received a very apologetic email from the head of that law firm not too long after my Uncle tore them a new asshole.
Moral of the story, don’t try to come down hard on people because of your mistake. Because you don’t know who those people may know\be related to.

A college friend of mine had the same issue; she was always getting important and confidential student emails meant for a journalism professor with the same name (we weren't in that department). The professor knew about this and always warned the students to double check, but it just kept on happening. She told me that she sometimes forwarded the emails on if she felt like it that day, but you'd think that *journalism* students would be a bit more careful about checking sources ...

I'm a little late to the party, but this just happened in the building where I live:
Someone broke a light fixture moving out, so the management company sent a video clip to all us tenants, asking if we recognized the people. One tenant hit Reply All, but it was a generic message, so no big deal (something like 'I'll keep an eye out'). Until...his neighbor also emailed the manager and wrote "I can't believe you're listening to this guy, he's a drunk and you can't trust anything he says, and if he tries to get into my place again while drunk, he will face Consequences" and then...you guessed it...he hit Reply All.
It's going to be interesting next time they meet in the hall.

A follow up email came in almost immediately about certain workers not getting the attention they deserved in a rather sarcastic manner, but they didn’t realize until it was too late when they sent the email it went NATIONAL. A quick following email apology came out with a simple explanation. Idk the current status of the person who made the email mistake, but there was plenty of follow up emails in the chain I guess for damage control.

Email had only recently been introduced by the employer and people often made errors in the "to" field. I came back from a medical leave, & had like, 230 REPLY ALL emails, where the original was a goodbye email, meant to reply all, then several, bye & good luck, then went into, are you aware you sent this to the whole company, then a couple we don't care about you leaving, then a giant string of please stop emailing me, stop replying all, stop replying all to tell us to stop replying all, what are these emails, stop replying all to ask questions, blah blah blah loop.
Eventually, IT sent a final email, saying they've blocked the chain, or whatever, & any additional replies, will be deleted.
Every time I came back from a medical leave, there were reply-all chains, but usually just from my department; that other one, was to the entire company.
The reply-all from the worker-bee, asking, John Stumpf, for a raise for all employees, got completely deleted, by IT. Back from medical leave, saw only the email from IT, saying an email was deleted from everyone's emails.
I wonder why they never deleted all the stupid reply-alls?
