Just tried a similar test to you in that I regularly fly the some flight path and I concur with you that there is something strange going on with the range on the Mini 2 since the latest firmware updates. Signal level dropped to amber at 250m. Lost signal at 300m at a height of 100m. Previously had no problems going to 500m with 4 bars still showing. Didn't attempt to go to 500m this evening as the midges were driving me crazy ( small biting insects that appear in their thousands in the evenings on the west of Scotland). I live in a rural area and there is no interference. Just checked for solar activity and it is and has been very low for the last hour or so.
Bloody hate midges! they always make you feel like your skin ins bloody crawling even when you get them all off! Yes indeed your findings are similar then! thank you very much for watching!
I have experienced same problem after updating too. I hope DJI would test their firmware thoroughly well before releasing it. Even if it takes longer time for the next release.
Thanks for the informative video. Prior to update, my rc signal did not go yellow like it does now after the update. Also video stutter now too. I am flying in same area, so it should not have changed. I am in process of rolling back to the previous version using Assistant. Hopefully it will restore my range.
I updated my Mini 2 yesterday and flew today, mostly a below 50 metres at as far out as 500m over an estuary. No issues that i could tell. Went thru two batteries. Shot both video and stills.
Hi Robert! hope you're well! thats good news! very little interference I imagine though, wonder how it performs in a higher interference area. mine was strange as you saw it wasn't picking up much interference but the lad was horrible! either way im glad yours is performing fine!
I used to have such faith in Dji products. The phantom series and the original Mavic's were some of the most reliable drone available. I have sold my Air2 due to not having any faith in the safety of flying it in public. The connection issue was it's limiting factor. I have kept my mini2 but due to the firmware never fully addressing the problems it very rarely gets to see the light of day. I hate that companies use the customer as a beta tester. And expect us to foot the bill by having to buy care refresh to compensate us if / when there is a fly away or as has been happening a lot lately, drones just falling from the sky without reason. I'm in Kent and I counted seven dji drones that just lost signal and crashed into the ground in one day about a week ago. All at the hands of experienced users. Dji need to sort their game out. Perfect and test the products before releasing them to market. Simply issuing a firmware or app update every week isn't the answer. We pay handsomely for our dji craft, we expect them to work as intended.
wanting your drone to perform as expected - not too much to ask really is it! not to mention the poor release notes when DJI make updates too! hugely frustrating!
How's your flight with the mini2 using the smart controller? I'll be checking out mine over the weekend! Hopefully, the flight will be as smooth as before!
I've just updated my firmware and app, and tested at 300 ft up and 1600 ft out across open fields with no signal loss at all. If anything, it "felt" better, but that might just be because I was expecting the worse 😊. Conditions have been good for flying today too.
I had sporadic signal problems, some flights good some not, also the battery seemed to be draining faster during the flight. Rolled back the firmware and all ok now.
Something is seriously wrong with the new update regarding signal drop out. I can confirm Gavin is totally correct regarding this issue. I'm using ISO on a I phone 11, and did some comparison flights on the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds, never had anything but full signal strength in theses areas and never loss of connection in over 7 months. I tried various height and distance over the last two days and suffered signal loss numerous times, i even put the phone in to airplane mode in case of 4/5 G interference, still got loss of signal at various heights and distance. This is quite concerning, and i suspect could damage the Mini 2's excellent reputation very quickly unless DJI act quickly. I would like to add i also own the Air 2 and flew that in the same area, same time, same phone, no problems at all.
I really appreciate your comments on the channel, many people won't have a bad word said about DJI but of course I only ever make these claims on my channel if I'm sure and can show and prove it, comments like yours - as much as I don't want you to have connection issues it reinforces my findings. I don't like doing video's like this but I test these things so I have to be honest
In the manual of the mini 2 is suggested to switch to airplane mode on your smartphone, meaning: switch of WIFI and Bluetooth. This should leave Occusync undisturbed.
Mini 2 has no issues what so ever! i made a test and i get exactly the same range, in 3 different areas. I have a video in my channel as well proving this. I also measured the EIRP of the signal from the controllwer and the Mini 2 with a spectrum analyzer and there are no issues in the TX power of the system, comparing to before the update.
Hi Gav, I can feel a long range rural test coming (me not you or you'll have the drone police knocking on your door lol). Still get same range in urban location since fw and app updates and it's fixed some weird issues I had which included camera not working at all on disconnect rth function and drone flying back at 45 degree angle on the odd occasion when camera did reconnect.
I am pleased the FW has fixed those issues and super glad you are getting the same sort of signal! oh yes I miss these but people would have a fit! they forget you can get permission for these things and jus assume you're being naughty!
Finally got to test today, as far as i can tell so far i haven't experienced any issue with signal loss, Same as i normally do from the back garden straight out over to the river, 60 meter height and lets just say it was WELL over 500 meters (lets just leave it at that :-). Swapped over to Smart controller and soon as i got to 320 meters out i noticed really bag lag/stuttering, just wasn't comfortable pushing on with it at all, The lag on it wasn't great before hand but was manageable.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes some people seem to be struggling whereas others are just fine. Smart controller jusy seems like it's out dated now and needs a revamp, I'm hearing there may be a new one coming up so that will be ideal !
Hi Gav. Same here in FCC after the firmware upgrade my range and latency has tanked. I followed your expert tutorial and rolled back the firmware just as you described. Catch is, I’m not seeing much of an improvement. Could the new DJI Fly version 1.4.4 also be part of this issue??
Flew most of the weekend, with the latest firmware and latest version of the fly app. Had no issues with connection or latency or anything all weekend long.
@@GAVINHR i did noticed that after the update, the default transmission had changed from auto to manual. I had to manually changed it back from manual to auto myself. Maybe that's what's going on?
Oh that's interesting! But mine was certainly on dual band - however even so the mini 2 with its greater broadcasting power should still perform equally to a Mavic mini.
@@GAVINHR Maybe take out the mini 2 again, switch the transmission from auto to manual, then wait a min and switch it back to auto, and then take it out for a spin in the same spot you were previously in filming and see if that made a difference. Just a thought
I hope there is a better update koming soon that fix al this problems .and that everybody can flying with switch from drone to other drones without problems. And also that range signal problem and the video lag problem are go to be fixed with a new better update.
Can this firmware contribute to video feed artefacts as this is what I’m getting? It happens after about 8mins of flight. The video displays pixelation and breakup and the M2 sometimes disconnects. It could be heat related. It happens when recording or not. If I switch the app off then on it fixes it. I’m going to try a better cable to my iPad 8 and android phone. I’ve had the M2 over a year so no warranty. Which firmware is best to rollback to if I want to try that?
I thought the whole point of the firmware update was to make the drone better NOT bloody worse. I bought the mini 2 for its range and will be fuming if the range is all screwed up. I was happy with my drone 2 updates earlier. Hopefully they give us the option to backdate the firmware to what it was .
Hi Gavin I did a test yesterday with both versions of the update. Ios and android uploaded today. I had no issues whatsoever. No lag, no drop outs. Very strange. One question, did you do the 2 flights on the same day? It can make a difference interference wise.
Hi mate! Yes indeed it sure does , as you know I always test things fairly and yes I also took the mini 2 today to see what happened actually after recording the mavic mini video and the same thing happened. Too many people are reporting this for it to be a coincidence I feel
it just goes to show that old tech "used well" can be better, having the choice to change channels yourself was the better option. If you had a range extender on the mini 1 it would have been even better. I tried 1.4.4 on my mini 1 (I'm a long term 1.1.10 user) and I hated that they took away a lot of the controls I used, and the app has to be used on manual for photo and video all the time..it's just unnecessary!
and the exposure lock gone etc, its odd! but yes indeed the mavic mini does well, I wanted to keep the video simple and including extenders in the mix would of confused the result so kept it simple for this one
@@GAVINHR there is also no manual ISO control in auto stills shooting, no AE lock in auto video shooting. I think you nailed it, in basic form MM1 was better. I pretty much fly in manual wifi mode now with my mini 1, most of the time it's in 5.8ghz and the range is still bonkers with a simple parabolic reflector. I also like the fact I can leave my lithium batteries fully charged and can go out flying at any moment with it. Mini 1 is still a great drone!
I've just mentioned that in my Amazon video - love the Mavic mini and the fact the batteries are great. I can not use the Mavic mini for a few weeks, come back and I'm still on 95% battery! Means it's easier to do a quick flight and don't have to worry ! My yagis are the strongest but the parabolic reflectors are the best all round and I agree. as long as you know how to use the Mavic mini it's a great drone
Try locking it into 2.4g for increased range.. It seems to me, it's rotating frequency, each time it does it, that's when total disconnect can occur. Never had a disconnect until now. App update to 1.4.4 Android though and it's been okay since...Need to get out to rural location and push it for a full test IMO...🤔🤔🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@GAVINHR No probs since the 1.4.4 update, but keeping an eye on it... Disconnects at 400 metres is not acceptable IMO, no matter where you are....🤔🤔🇬🇧
UPDATE...Even having Firmware version 01.03.000 today 21 june 14:21 dutch time it said it had an update....did the update... it was succesfull... versionnumber remains the same...check it out
Had the same problem, didn't have problem's before. I hope they fix with an update, I'm on holiday now and was flying nothing in way of drone and had signal problems.
Great vid & comparison. Hope DJI didn't e-snip the Mini2's OS range, otherwise, what is the point!?! Further, with the current Amazon Prime Day offers for the Mini (1), we now have a really strong & better functioning contender with the old Mini...
I can't find your video on the smart controller, have you deleted it? Lot's of people have noted that the smart controller has screen recording. I can't find it. any iseas?
I did about 20 flights at 3 different locations alternating with standard and smart controller: I can confirm this video latency issue or stuttering (seems to be worse with the smart controller). But there was no range issue so far.
I tested mine last night on my usual as far as I can see flight over a town ;-) and I report there are no signal issues I can report. Signal was strong no delay. I am using mini2 with Android Samsung A40
Some positive feedback.. I was having a lot of issues after the DJI Fly Android app update to version 1.4.2, horrendous lag, dropouts etc (so much so that I uninstalled the app and went back to version 1.4.0), which worked perfectly on test flights, however when I was out filming on Saturday I was getting a few glitches (still using app version 1.4.0), random spots of lag, the app crashed twice and the RC lost connection at one point too. I couldn't attribute this to electrical interference as I was flying over a river in the middle of nowhere, I was flying quite close and was direct line of sight with nothing between the RC and the aircraft, so it wasn't a distance issue either. So when the new firmware update came out, followed closely by the Android app update to 1.4.4, I had a dilemma about what to do, however I took the plunge and updated the firmware and the app (and all my batteries). I then performed some test flights, in a known area that I usually perform test flights, I went through everything, test after test, over multiple flights, and to my delight everything was now working perfectly, no noticeable lag, no app crashes, no dropouts, and I was more than happy with the range during my tests too.
Certainly nice to see some positive feedback! I genuinely dislike doing these videos, I have done a review using the mavic mini with 1.4.4 and all was fine ive just not posted that video yet! nice to see your issues are resolved and long may it continue!
Thank you for watching and it's good that my videos are reaching new viewers. I have posted a solution if you're comfortable with it and it has worked for others.
@@GAVINHR thank you. You mean a firmware rollback? I have to do some more tests. Directly after the update I managed to fly 1 km above water. Yesterday and today I got a signal loss at about 20 meter. I switched my phone to airplane mode and got no more signal losts. Should I always use airplane mode?
I use airplane mode but I'm led to believe it's pretty much a myth and doesn't actually do anything. I've never seen a performance difference personally however I use it to stop interruptions when I'm screen recording
Due to bad weather I have only flown just now since the newest update... first time in 6 months has my mini 2 signal ever dropped out , also flew an entire battery but video only recorded the first 40 seconds.. first time that’s ever happened
Thanks for the video. After installing the latest fw upgrade and app upgrade, I am also facing stuttering video during flying with the mini 2. DJI needs to fix this issue ASAP
Yes indeed very frustrating! As I say in the video too many people are reporting it for it to be just me! I don't want anybody to suffer and I want people's drones to work as they should but I'm also glad it's not just me !
I've had my M2 about 4 months and have never been that impressed with its range, whether it's got worse with the last firmware upgrade I'm not sure. I get disconnects at about 200-300 meters. I don't expect you can reinstall previous firmware to compare. Does DJI publish info on the radio frequency specification? I'm interested in channel spacings, modulation, bandwidth and effective radiated power? Do I understand correctly that the UK M2 has 100 milliwatts output power and the US M2 has 1 watt? The other thing I have noticed is video breakup on my phone in the Fly app. It doesn't affect the final high res video but happens out in the open (on the beach) with no known interference at relatively close range (I use good quality Samsung cards). Thanks.
They don't go into that much detail from what I can find but they do state it's broadcasting power and the differences in the spec sheet on their website.no it won't affect yihr final video it's Just the screen live feed that's the problem. It's nothing to do with your card that only affects your video feed
Could the latency be down to bloatware? An app with more capabilities serving more marques of drone must surely have more program lines and more branching statements, so more work for the processor to get through. Glad to hear that the Mavic Mini is not affected. 👍 Thanks again Gavin.
It could be. This fly app was supposed to be a slimmed down version but it now covers 5 drones. Seems the basic version with the Mavic mini seems to be absolutely fine !
It look like that they use the mini SE limitaties in the mini2 firmware. Also I see a differents in the latest Fly App. I use a older app version and I had no RC disconnection with that version instead of the latest version..
That terrible Gavin i haven't tested mine yet but whats really weird is others that review the firmware say its actually better range or the same and others mirror what you say i wonder why that is ,i wont bother saying names cause im sure you no LOL ,but ya some thing seems to very wrong here ,keeps us updated please
Yeah see for me the reason I followed this up is based on the fact that so many people made the comment that they were noticing a drop. You only need to look through the comments on this video to see that. We cant all be wrong I feel. Let me know what happens when you test it please Rick
@@GAVINHR I agree Gavin but im wondering maybe different countries may affect this firmware , i dont no but either way they should update to solve this ,cause its not acceptable right Mini 2 is advertise for like 6 miles distance
Well the US have different rules when it comes to drone broadcasting power so when the mini 2 is in the US it has a stronger signal output than the rest of the world basically ! So US users will suffer that bit less
I flew my Mini 2 out to over 600m with no loss of signal the other day (full bars all the way, with trees and a viaduct in the way at one point), after updating to the new firmware.
Well if you think about it DJI do false advertise this drone already! They advise the range as per FCC / US rules which have greater broadcasting power. In other parts of the world it's still advertised as 10km but dont get it!
They do indeed when you look in the spec but on initial launch if you watch their videos it leads people to believe they are getting 10km. I agree people should check but it should be shown in my opinion
I downloaded the newest firmware I haven't seen the transmission issue as of yet. I flew yesterday for a few minutes and I flew away from me with no real line of sight. Trees between me and the drone no way of the signal getting straight to the drone and I didn't seem to have a issue. I then flew a different way out over a marsh no direct line of sight this time either trees buildings in the way flew out to about 1600ft good signal no video lag. So not sure what's going on but I am not seeing it on my drone.
Im pleased you're having no issues, are you in the US? You guys have a more powerful signal than us this side of the Atlantic so i feel you may see the issue less
@@GAVINHR but probably now jinxed my self lol!!! I love the mini2 I wish my mavic air first gen had the occusync. I had to put a 4 hawks antenna system in it to get any kind of a decent signal. I use the flat panel alot, and then I have a set of whips that are okay. I still love my air I just don't use it alot anymore.
There's definitely something wrong with the latest firmware, I lost connection several times just barely 40m away from me, terrifying, considering it might have auto landed in water
Sounds familiar. It happened to me at a similar distance. Total disconnect but thankfully returned to home. I'm loosing confidence in it as this isn't safe.
Correct. I mean the drone will always make it back of course the RTH is a great safety feature but it's hard to get smooth footage with the current latency
I very much hope so! I really do not like posting videos of this nature at all but I was very surprised and too many people noticed a loss in performance also. So I thought let's take out the Mavic mini for a comparison and this was the result
Same here. I've been putting my Mini 2 up just before sunset for the last 2 weeks in the same place and height ( 100m ) and not had any issues until the latest firmware was installed. Lost signal at 300m and RTH. Previously could go out to 500m with only dropping 1 bar.
So my update for the Mini 2 didn’t download and I don’t want to prompt it to if you’re telling me it’s shit. Bought the 2 mainly for range, 4k, and zoom and now one of those is stripped away from us? WTF, not too late for me to get a refund. They better correct this, Skydio 2 is out, just sayin. I haven’t even got to see what’s so great about Occusync yet.
@@rwright59 Weak signal and aircraft not connect problem showing after flying my dji mini 2 even drone near to remote… may be after Dji Fly firmware update app version 1.5.4 and RC firmware update 04.11.0032 and aircraft firmware 01.03.000 .. is this a problem from update or remote to iPhone cable ? My iOS latest update is 15.2 , plz give me suggestions
I have been testing the new firmware since it came out and I am experiencing random video feed stutters. Today I also experienced a complete RC disconnect. My theory is DJI updated the firmware to allow the use of the Smart Controller and this change is degrading our performance with the standard controller.
The problems just never end do they...since I updated a while ago...cant remember which one as there are so many...quick transfer no longer works and no exposure lock in video mode...when tapping the screen.....
I haven’t noticed any difference in signal strength with my mini 2. Can’t say nothing has changed as every flight is on a different route and obviously circumstances affect the range.
I have a problem wenn I switch frome drone to a other drone to fly . I own a mavic 2 pro and a mavic mini 2 together with mine dji smart controller. If I flying mine mavic mini 2 and I want to switch to mine mavic 2 pro to fly with smart controller no problem but , if I want to switch from mavic 2 pro back to mavic mini 2 again with the smart controller than is it not good working I must reconnect mine mavic mini 2 again to get it to flying again with the smartcontroller. Otherwise the smartcontroller don't connect with the mavic mini 2 . Greetings danny damveld from enschede city, Netherlands 🇳🇱
I’ve had a few new issues. Complete loss Of signal, even just a few metres away. I’ve also had a message pop up telling me my SD card is running out of space, but it was nowhere near full, not even 25% and I’ve never had that issue before today.
Interesting error that one I must say I've never seen that. Signal loss is never good and as someone else said let's not skirt around it - no mini 2 should lose signal at 400m
I must be lucky because mini as never performed so well I've got so much further than ever am well pleased with it but prior to the firmware upgrade I'll get 1500 ft and I was losing signal and connection loss very strange anyway another good video gavin just seen your one on amazon and totally agree about the mini 1 what a great price and even in 2.7k recording your find it hard to tell the difference between that and 4k so those that want a beginner drone I would definitely go for this and with your range extenders will more and likely go as far as the mini 2 😁👍👌
It's an unreal price for £329 our money! And yep totally! I'm proper glad your drone is performing well my friend ! I am very surprised by it all that's for sure!
Same for me. The signal totally drops and disconnects and then shows a grey screen. Again, I was flying in the same spot the day before I did the update with no problems. I regret doing the update now.
Luckily, I've no issues with my Mini 2 after the update! For some experiencing problems, maybe DJI will look into this and see if there's something they can do with the instances of video lag.
Hi Gavin, I'm facing strange signal strength issue with latest updates. It works fine with 2.4GHz but with 5.8GHz it disconnects every time. I'm not sure why it shows "aircraft not connected to RC" and disconnects, even though height is just 10m. after that I'm stuck to the state of being passive observer. I can't control the drone. feels nervous and uncomfortable to fly the mini 2 after latest updates.
Yes I agree this is a problem, if you watch my latest video I have had a nice flight with a beta version of the app with the latest firmware. And seems to be much improved
I just bought the mini 2 yesterday and I can’t even download the new firmware. Every time it try’s to install it, it loses its connection every few seconds then connects then goes out again. At first I was super paranoid about it, but after doing some searching seems it may be best I don’t even try until a for sure fix comes out.
@@GAVINHR honestly your best opinion yes or no… Would it be fine just to stay on the previous firmware? I tested the drone and it does really well! ( compared to my SE) Or should I make an attempt to download the latest?
Ocusync is still technically wifi - just ocusync there is a bit more jiggery pokery but essentially its just the ability to switch channels in flight to ensure a stronger signal if it starts to lose it so really it should always have an advantage
The problem must be in the software. I wouldn’t buy the drone if they artificially limited the range. Maybe DJI is having a hard time syncing the Mini 2 with older hardware like the Smart Controller.
We can't say for sure what's really happening with the signal! A lot of factors are at play here anyway. But say there's a slight glitch, I'm pretty sure I can always count on DJI to fix it asap!
I hope not! as usual I just post my findings and let you the viewers decide what you think but I think its certainly fair as possible. should you have issued I will be posting a video on how to roll back firmware shortly
@@GAVINHR that will be excellent as I'm having no problems on the x.4.2 version on android so far so would be helpful if things go south. Thanks again for a great video

@@GAVINHR Ok so i tested it now. It still performs the same. I had one signal drop at around 400m (bars in orange), altitude around 45 - 50m, urban area. Brought it back, tried again, more vigorous this time and no issue. It's strange how only certain few have issues. We all fly the same drone, same firmware.
Yeah that's a bloody good result. The UK now has restrictions whereas we for the most part are stuck to 500m distance so the longer range tests are out for me now I'm afraid as people will just complain
i didnt update and not going to. have auto landing switched off now. if i update 100% it will be restored and im not sure if i can disable it again after. and maybe dji is limiting the mini2, more reason to not update...
5ghz has much less range than 2.5ghz, maybe it's getting stuck in 5ghz mode and not auto switching to 2.5ghz? I can not see them limiting range on the drone because in the right environment or with mods it can be seen over 500m not just that it's up to the pilot to abide by vlos rules not the drone manufacturer. That and the police have now been given powers to police drones and there currently doing a operation to combat drone miss use as per my other post on your other video (linked BBC news).
You are correct this does have less range under normal circumstances but of course even if it was stuck in 5.8 - thats why I fixed the mavic mini in 5.8 to take away that issue.
My suspicion is it's US v EU, of course not everybody seems to have the issue but there are enough people reporting it to believe it's an issue that exists.
One thing to keep in mind that we see in Ham Radio mainly on VHF and UHF is "Solar Obsorption". Any time on a bright sunny day range is less plus it seems the hotter it is the more it's affect. Now being in the upper end of UHF / microwave freqs I would think it has more of an affect on it. But im not a microwave freq operator and can't say from experience. On VHF solar obsorption is pronounced enough it is significant and very noticeable. So was it due to solar obsorption? Only way to find out is fly there at different times of day. Try it early in the AM and see. Here in Texas I'm seeing it. I usually fly early AM as the sun just come up but flew in the afternoon recently and noticed a difference. Hopefully it was as we ( Hams ) say due to "band conditions". If you know any Hams ask them about Solar Obsorption. Try to find one with UHF or even micro wave experience. In the UK it may not be as big a deal but here in Texas it's very pronounced! Whew it's hot and humid! Another condition is Troposphere Ducting but that enhances your range. But at the same time if that was happening and was allowing interference to be stronger that very well could have been the case. Did you check the channels? Good luck and let us know what you find.
One more thing. Please fly the drones on the same day. Not different timeles. You'll never know maybe the strongest interference was off that day. Please 1 more test. Fly them on the same day.
Hi there! Your username rings true! I did actually go back and fly the mini 2 after I recorded the Mavic mini but just to check and yes the results where the same - I actually got a disconnection a little earlier / closer but I didn't want the mini 2 to look even worse so used the previous footage
@@GAVINHR wow! thank you for the feedback. I am not going to update my firmware. another question. i just got a mini 2, what are the forced updates of DJi in this drone? i mean can i control what to update or not? or are they forcing some updates one way or another.
To be fair all the DJI claimed figures are based on FCC areas anyway - so CE counties for example still get told it will go so far but they don't so this already happens

I think they've introduced something that's impacting Mini 2, Air 2, and 2S as well. The stability of signal just isn't there.
I agree, my air2s is struggling also
@Norm Simpson do update us. Does your both your mini 2 operate in different firmware version?
@Norm Simpson thank you. Well wait for your update.
I bought a air2s yesterday at Microcenter . Connection issues. Its like DJI is doing this on purpose to boost sales on the Mavic 3.
Not going to update until I see an update that looks like an improvement.
Got mini 2 for father's day! So excited!
It's a great drone overall and I'm sure this will be sorted asap!
@@GAVINHR Thanks Gavin I'm sure it will be good.

I've just updated my firmware and app, and tested at 300 ft up and 1600 ft out across open fields with no signal loss at all. If anything, it "felt" better, but that might just be because I was expecting the worse 😊. Conditions have been good for flying today too.
That's brilliant to hear Reggie ! Of course I don't wish anybody to have issues and I'm glad all is ok for you! ☺️
@@GAVINHR Do you use an android or ios device? Just wondered if that would have any bearing. Android here.
Hi Reggie, I am Android also! What area of the world are you?! That can make a difference should you be in the US
@@GAVINHR UK East Midlands.
I've just got my mini 2. So sounds like best not to upgrade any firmware at all then ?
Assuming I can just select not to update on dji app ??
Good vid man.I have noticed some issues with rc signal and range.
I hope it gets resolved ASAP!
I hope so. Since update 1.4.2 I've noticed them.
Maybe a bit of accidental cross fertilisation with Mini SE software??
@gavinhr is there any news or release notes from DJI around these updates? Do we know what they say?
Yes definitely there is something going on as my mini 2 has become very annoying dropping signal , it's like I can't trust it anymore.
I had sporadic signal problems, some flights good some not, also the battery seemed to be draining faster during the flight. Rolled back the firmware and all ok now.
Perfect!
You're Reviews Are Really Great!! I truly appreciate your honesty!!
Glad you like them!
I use airplane mode regardless because I screen record for my videos
I have flown since the update and had no issues so far. Hope I will never have. Thanks for the update Gavin.
I'm glad you have no issues and I also hope that continues. Thank you kindly
Possibly done on purpose to make the mini 3 seem better
You never know!
Not all updates are beneficial. Learned that long ago.
Im getting the same since the last flurry of updates. The MA2 is doing it as well
Cheers, not flown mine since update due to crap weather, hopefully this week
Let me know how you get on when you do! Thanks for watching as always
@@GAVINHR , will do
Hi Gav, I can feel a long range rural test coming (me not you or you'll have the drone police knocking on your door lol).

In very glad to hear that! Some will be fine however too many people have reported it for me to not think it's occuring sadly
Yeah dji mini2 again 1 step forward and 2 steps back. I still play with my mavic mini more than the mini 2. 👍🤟 thanks for the head's up mate
You're most welcome, to be fair the drones I use the most is the Mavic mini and air2s, the mini 2 I only tend to use for testing / update videos
I'm having the same problem!!! Can I downdate to the old version
You can but it's not easy, look out for the up coming video where I show you exactly how to do it
Hi there. I have done two flight today, the first about 2.3 km and the second one over 2.7 km without any issues, but this was at the rural area.
Yeah hopefully yours will be ok, it does seem some are flying fine as yours seems to be but certainly enough people reporting issues
I thought the whole point of the firmware update was to make the drone better NOT bloody worse. I bought the mini 2 for its range and will be fuming if the range is all screwed up. I was happy with my drone 2 updates earlier. Hopefully they give us the option to backdate the firmware to what it was .
Even silly things like iOS charging option and the lack of exposure lock is bizarre!
Might it be region/map/FCC related? What's your region, mate?
Yeah CE over here in the UK! So we have less power than you guys to begin with
it just goes to show that old tech "used well" can be better, having the choice to change channels yourself was the better option.
2.4 wouldn't of worked in this area sadly ( found out in a previous flight ) hence the 5.8. how are you getting on now?
@@GAVINHR No probs since the 1.4.4 update, but keeping an eye on it... Disconnects at 400 metres is not acceptable IMO, no matter where you are....🤔🤔🇬🇧

Yes that is the latest version of the app. 01.03.0000 is the mini 2 firmware version and that's the possible problem
Great vid & comparison. Hope DJI didn't e-snip the Mini2's OS range, otherwise, what is the point!?!
Further, with the current Amazon Prime Day offers for the Mini (1), we now have a really strong & better functioning contender with the old Mini...

I can confirm this video latency issue or stuttering (seems to be worse with the smart controller).
But there was no range issue so far.
Appreciate the feedback thank you !

I found your video looking for information because I have lots of signal problems since the last update. Hope there will be a solution soon
@@GAVINHR the solution is a firmware rollback?
Yes indeed !
Absolutely correct, since the update I have found it takes much longer for the mini2 to find and lock into gps. Definite change since the update.
Thanks for watching and your comment ☺️
Due to bad weather I have only flown just now since the newest update...
first time in 6 months has my mini 2 signal ever dropped out , also flew an entire battery but video only recorded the first 40 seconds.. first time that’s ever happened
Yes very strange indeed! thank you for watching and your comment
Any updates on your contact with DJI regarding this problem ?
Thanks for the video. After installing the latest fw upgrade and app upgrade, I am also facing stuttering video during flying with the mini 2. DJI needs to fix this issue ASAP
Yes indeed very frustrating! As I say in the video too many people are reporting it for it to be just me! I don't want anybody to suffer and I want people's drones to work as they should but I'm also glad it's not just me !
There are lots of problems they need to fix...the more firmware and app updates they release the worse it seems to get...I just dont get it..
Yeah things are supposed to get better!
Dji should roll this back and give us for what we pay for... Why limit range...pfff. Thanks mate
I will be doing a video on how to do this shortly so it may help some people
I've had my M2 about 4 months and have never been that impressed with its range, whether it's got worse with the last firmware upgrade I'm not sure.
You can reinstall a previous version I'll try get that video out tonight if you look out for it
Many thanks
It looks like their site is down.

There was an update to the app today haven't flown it but maybe that fixed the problem.
Hi Steven, no it shouldn't do and I was using version 1.4.4 on this video :)
It look like that they use the mini SE limitaties in the mini2 firmware. Also I see a differents in the latest Fly App. I use a older app version and I had no RC disconnection with that version instead of the latest version..
Is there any way too do firmware back? Video would be nice.
I will look at doing that video in the next couple of days as it takes a bit of work :)

I flew my Mini 2 out to over 600m with no loss of signal the other day (full bars all the way, with trees and a viaduct in the way at one point), after updating to the new firmware.
If dji really limit the range then what is the point of advertising it with a max range of 10km?
Well said! 👍It would be false advertising, of course we all keep vlos 😉🥴 would we all buy a mini two or three with a max range of 400m ?
To sell it....of course....No brainer..🤔🇬🇧
Which they have .

Same for me. The signal totally drops and disconnects and then shows a grey screen. Again, I was flying in the same spot the day before I did the update with no problems. I regret doing the update now.
Keep tuned as I will be doing a video on how to roll back firmware in the next few days
Luckily, I've no issues with my Mini 2 after the update! For some experiencing problems, maybe DJI will look into this and see if there's something they can do with the instances of video lag.

after that I'm stuck to the state of being passive observer. I can't control the drone. feels nervous and uncomfortable to fly the mini 2 after latest updates.
Yes I agree this is a problem, if you watch my latest video I have had a nice flight with a beta version of the app with the latest firmware. And seems to be much improved
@@GAVINHR I saw that video and downloaded the latest beta app (1185). Let me try that and see whether it will fix my issue.
Brilliant, let me know how you get on
@@GAVINHR Tested with latest app, it didn't solve my issue.
Have you tried the older firmware? Or actually the controller cable to your phone?
I just bought the mini 2 yesterday and I can’t even download the new firmware. Every time it try’s to install it, it loses its connection every few seconds then connects then goes out again. At first I was super paranoid about it, but after doing some searching seems it may be best I don’t even try until a for sure fix comes out.
I have made a video on this, if you use the DJI assistant 2 software you can do it via a pc / Mac and it will install properly that way
@@GAVINHR honestly your best opinion yes or no…
Would it be fine just to stay on the previous firmware? I tested the drone and it does really well! ( compared to my SE)
Or should I make an attempt to download the latest?
@@beardedtrucker5650 staying on the older firmware will be absolutely fine :)
Wondered if had something to do with the fact Mini uses WiFi and Mini 2 is Ocusync.
I'm 100% sure they will! Thank you for commenting and watching
God hope it doesn’t happen to me as if just downloaded the new firmware and fly app. I’m going to test it out as I’ve got an android phone
I hope not! as usual I just post my findings and let you the viewers decide what you think but I think its certainly fair as possible. should you have issued I will be posting a video on how to roll back firmware shortly
@@GAVINHR that will be excellent as I'm having no problems on the x.4.2 version on android so far so would be helpful if things go south. Thanks again for a great video
@@GAVINHR hi mate just tested new firmware, 4K at 30fps does not work on Samsung s21- severe lag with transmission . All other video formats transmit without lag.
Its true i well experience not stable connection
I am sorry for the trouble you are having but also kind of glad it is not just me reporting the problem
yes Gav your right,, your observation is same as i have between MM1 to Mini2,, I'm really disappointed and blaming myself buy another drone identical from mini 1 which I already have, from very beginning since I bought mini 2 doesn't my lips make smile by mini 2 performance comparing my original 1, actually i crashed mini 2 from her 2 weeks old that never happen on mini 1, until now i feel bad evrytime try mini 2 fly, GPS time before mini 2 have it,, RC not bind or no connection between control and UAV, range doesn't reach mini 1 reach.. and so.. and i get fucked evrytime i flew m2 which i expecting more good than 1. my exitement actually gone in mini2 and to DJI,
Sorry for the delay in my reply - yes indeed, too many people over hyped the mini 2 when the Mavic mini was and still is more than capable! Thank you for watching I appreciate it
Weird stuff! If you watch the UA-camr Circling the drone, he fly's over 5 km out, no issues at all. This was after the new update, he did say so.
Hi Kevin, yes but he is FCC as in the US who have more power to begin with so thats still entirely possible
Oh yes, you're right.. I didn't think of that, thanks! I'm from South Africa, I must still test mine. We the same as Europe.
Let me know how you get on!
Yes very strange! You can see by the comments so many people have the issue also
Circling the drone on his latest video did a range test (US) with the latest versions and easily achieved 3.5 miles of range.....
Yeah that's a bloody good result. The UK now has restrictions whereas we for the most part are stuck to 500m distance so the longer range tests are out for me now I'm afraid as people will just complain
I am in the US flew an hour today. No issues but i fly over forists nothing but nature around no cell coverage even.
That sounds nice to be fair ! Plus your FCC version does have more broadcasting power than ours over here so that will help to begin with
@@GAVINHR wonder if someone with radio test equipment can read the trasmiter power if you can roll back the firmware old vers new.
That would be incredibly interesting to see!
When I first got mine I could easily fly within 3-4km of my house, now it barely does 1.2-1.3km before I loose signal!
i didnt update and not going to. have auto landing switched off now. if i update 100% it will be restored and im not sure if i can disable it again after.
and maybe dji is limiting the mini2, more reason to not update...
Absolutely your choice my friend ! I just provide the tests and let you all decide what to do 😊
5ghz has much less range than 2.5ghz, maybe it's getting stuck in 5ghz mode and not auto switching to 2.5ghz?
I can not see them limiting range on the drone because in the right environment or with mods it can be seen over 500m not just that it's up to the pilot to abide by vlos rules not the drone manufacturer.
That and the police have now been given powers to police drones and there currently doing a operation to combat drone miss use as per my other post on your other video (linked BBC news).
You are correct this does have less range under normal circumstances but of course even if it was stuck in 5.8 - thats why I fixed the mavic mini in 5.8 to take away that issue.
We need to track whether or not it's an IOS vs Android problem or maybe a US vs EU version problem.
My suspicion is it's US v EU, of course not everybody seems to have the issue but there are enough people reporting it to believe it's an issue that exists.
bROKE my drone today after update. Keeps on disconnecting at 5.0 M high. Always shows "not connected" tried to downgrade but still the same.
Absolute nightmare! That seems strange that close down, I would get on to DJI about it
Always found the signal strength on the mini 2 very poor. Even With Line of sight it always ends up going into RTH.
You need to contact Florin Andries on FB he has modified DJI FLy to FCC
There's something wrong then. I've never had even a loss of one bar of signal strength at considerably more than 500m.
Love it
I suffered a crash when my drone lost signal only 6 feet in front of me. now who is to blame? surely this is the fault of the software not the pilot?
My mini one have better range that my mini 2 now after the firmware update, this update is pretty crappy
I really like the Mavic mini but the mini 2 should certainly be better
Yes you can choose not to update it won't be forced on you at all. As long as you just dismiss the notification you're good to go :)
If it's proven DJI are limmiting range then this will have a huge impact on sales
I would consider sending mine back as it was sold as doing more range and vlos can be increased using lights, skins etc
To be fair all the DJI claimed figures are based on FCC areas anyway - so CE counties for example still get told it will go so far but they don't so this already happens
Update about this please
