- The Supreme Court has decided in favor of a small Oregon town that placed civil punishments on homeless people for sleeping in public spaces, finding 6-3 the punishments don't violate the Eighth Amendment. Former federal prosecutor Scott Fredericksen joined CBS News to discuss the ruling.

This country is becoming the cruelest country in the world.
when I did not have a place, I would come in to the State Park after 9pm and get showered and leave by 6am. I was a ghost and no one knew I was there because I left everywhere I stayed cleaner than when I arrived, no trash. It was how I was raised. Leave no trace, alter no park
Exactly! The authorities and people in general are very tolerant of this type of 'leave no trace' homelessness.
people shouldn’t have to live like that in the wealthiest country in the world, what you went through is not a bragging point, it’s sad af
And those with disabilities who can't do that? Let me guess be put in underfunded institutions where they can look forward to being abused all their life? 52 % of homeless people have a disability.
There are those in power who don't want to eliminate homelessness and in fact like homelessness because they think it serves as a powerful specter and motivator to keep the masses well-behaved, on the hamster wheel, and in line with "the Program" -- which also happens to make them wealthy.
Those? You mean ALL in power
It has for centuries been the moral duty of churches to care for the homeless. It’s why they receive tax exemptions for money donated to churches. What has happened to discourage this?
Most All churches now pocket the Lions share then look for other donations to give the needy , The churches are a money laundering origination ! Every once in awhile one gets caught but the brainwashed Public forgets so soon and to easily !
Simple, PROFIT!
Time for them to help or we remove their tax exempt status.
That's right! Churches should be audited for this. Why Not ? The churches are now locked! I don't blame them.

SUPREME COURT ... are there any RULES allowing for AFFORDABLE HOUSING and to PREVENT CORPORATE OWNERSHIP of HOMES that leads to HIGH RENTS 🤔
its not even about housing costs, the addicted and severely mentally ill couldnt or wont pay ten cents for housing, you do not know the situation
@@nobolt7It is very much about housing costs, addicts and the mentally ill used to at least be able to afford a sh*thole studio or weekly rate place, now that’s not possible. Stop acting like you know sh*t when you clearly don’t

Homelessness exists.
So where are they so supposed to go?
Well...they are paying for hotels and phones and food for illegal immigrants......
If you would of watched the video, you'd of found out this was deemed a local issue, not a state or federal issue and should be handled by local officials because they know their situation better then a Federal "one size fits all" approach. @jacobnapkins1155 depends on who and what people vote for locally. Jail could be the best first step to straighten some people up and send them on a better path. Certainly ignoring drug abuse is not a best option which in most cases is far more inhumane and is a death sentence to 100's of thousands
Living on the street is not an acceptable decision for a human being AND not fair to the citizens at all!
So lock e m up? What happens if u ca nt afford ur taxes anymore ? Lock u up?

Cruel? AYKM? Here, they are all over roads in 112° heat, sleeping - half naked - between aggressively panhandling, tagging, publically relieving themselves, the LITTER, stolen dogs, shopping carts, setting fires - AND 1 officer killed by a homeless guy - the officer was only talking to him. Shameful.

have you volunteered at a shelter. If not go today.
This is the Supreme Court, where justices have lovely homes, a first-class education and get an excellent yearly salary...and still take perks and gifts from their wealthy associates without making those gifts public. 🤣🤣
Now that there is a way of forcing homeless addicts off the streets, communities can now get busy providing drug treatment and temporary housing options for them. This was impossible before because homeless had a right to camp in public and most of them simply REFUSED to participate in their own rehabilitation.
🐑
😂😂 oh man you people need to try to get services they offer homeless. 0 rehabs, cause those cost real money to run. But a pharmaceutical company can help fund a methadone clinic and there's like 3 of them and they just keep you on it it's simply just their version of street heroine no treatment plan but they will continue to give you methadone forever.
@@MikieGoodwin-n8y You mean waiting lists, right? And also the fact that you have to comply with program requirements which few addicts are actually willing to do.
when someone is wanted, take them back to the State they are wanted in to take care of their issues. Why can't The Homeless Population be housed on city-owned properties?
America has more than 600 Billionaire's, they could or can solve this problem very easily.
But homeless people play a very important part in the billionaire ecosystem. They help remind the billionaires of how rich they are.
Biden and his donors haven’t done anything making it fine with the DNC just like Hillary with her corporate donors of the past she PROMISED not to accept money from.
The Clinton Foundation has plenty of money and resources along with Obama and the DNC but they just don’t care as their narcissism consumes them.
I spent a decade working with the homeless. They don’t all want help. Many of them would just OD and die if you gave them money. I saw it way too many times when we would connect them with benefits or help them find employment. Some just want to live that way too.

Not every homeless person can stay in homeless shelters ... maybe they need to fix the system before they start arresting homeless .. so why dont you learn something
We cannot enable sleeping in the streets, its not safe, sanitary or ok in any way. We need to open many more tiny home communities with support, group homes, psychiatric hospitals for chronically ill, and other support that does not include enabling, or allowing individuals to live in this dangerous way. We need much more transparency in spending for funds allocated to homelessness. There are approximately 40K homeless in LA county and over 500 million dollars was spent in 2022, this does not add up. Mayor Bass is disappointed in the ruling, well I am disappointed in how her city enables the chronically ill mentally/addicted individuals and are NOT helping them by allowing them to live in filth and disrupt society as a whole. I was an ER nurse navigator and we are not getting it done. The unhoused often do not want to go back to shelters and prefer petty theft to get drugs or whatever and lay in the street. Those who sit at home outraged about a ruling that most likely wont make any difference anyway and most likely will not be enforced should get off the couch and volunteer at a shelter. Hear those "guests" demanding coffee and donuts. Our ERs are packed with these individuals who show up at triage or by ambulance every day while not filling their free prescriptions or following up with providers to treat the conditions, driving the cost of healthcare skyrocketing out to control. Hospitals created "co-insurance" I believe to cover these individuals because they are losing so much money. I applaud the ruling and I am democrat, but believe strongly in self responsibility but much more needs to be done and to show how money is being spent and what works and what does not, what.
@@nobolt7 thank you for your service! the gentrification of neighborhoods by greedy corporations and house flippers has caused this issue. give back the houses, give back the land, take a tax incentive for doing so and the People win and those who created these vast stretches of new empty housing can let people rent or buy with zero down and affordable payments and the big payment at the end of the loan not the beginning. Get rid of the credit bureaus and make institutions have their own credit departments. So, a community passes an ordinance that says anyone without an address out past sundown goes to jail until they have a permanent address. Then you can use that to put them in a labor camp, where you sell their labor to local industries while charging them room and board.
My thoughts exactly. Creeping authoritarianism.
Better than people shitting on the streets. Also, America has had vagrancy laws for centuries. They obviously don’t violate the 8th Amendment, since they’ve been in place since the 8th Amendment was enacted.

SCOTUS judges - God must be proud of you !
The 6 Catholic judges sure abides by the Catholic Church's teachings on homelessness and the poor. The teaching states that everyone has a right to dignity, community, and care, and that Christians should love and care for the poor because God is the poor and the poor are God. The Church also believes that caring for those who are less well off is everyone's responsibility, and that vulnerable and marginalized people should receive special attention.

No, the announcer is lying about what is in the DOJ report. The DOJ report says it does not care about the Supreme Court case because that is about the 8th amendment, and theirs is about the 14th amendment and a variety of laws.
If you die of exposure and exhaustion is that illegal?
To avoid dying of exposure, all you have to do is go to a community with a shelter and participate in a program to end your homelessness. But that requires conforming to some rules and entering treatment programs. That's something the present breed of homeless are simply unwilling to do.
help is out there, dying from exposure IS A CHOICE

Nikolai - have you volunteered at a shelter?
Does this mean any public sleeping like you have an apartment but you take a long day time nap in the park because it's super hot in your apartment and no air conditioning ???
Depends on the law in your locality. The town in this case only prohibited CAMPING (with equipment etc.) and overnight parking, not simply sleeping.
People from all walks of life become homeless. Yes, well to do people end up homeless too. Let them find out how providing no shelters, making access to the public assistance difficult, etc. Just keep being cruel and see how the crime rises. Criminalizing these people's will not help them get help. It will remove them from society and they will rot in prison for being homeless. This is cruelty. This is inhumane. This is not at all the Christian way. My God is not happy with the greed in this country. Im certain of that.
And our Creator was homeless. Jesus was homeless. Jesus said, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”
Have you volunteered at a shelter?
@@nobolt7in the city I live we don’t have a shelter. I could almost write a book on how much time my wife and I spent volunteering to help the city build a shelter. Worked with mayor, etc. Our heart is broken to the core because we know the homeless by name and they are our friends. I wish we had the money and the land and we would take EVERY homeless person, with no prerequisites, and provide them with a shelter. Again, I could write a book on this… but I tell you the truth: I have only one hero and that’s Jesus. If I were to have another hero it would be the homeless. I’m also an emergency medical technician, first responder and public health and safety servant for over 30 years. The city wouldn’t work with us or anyone in the past who wanted to help them build a shelter, so we do the only thing we can do: LOVE.
Harlen crow is so happy with his investments/bribes.
Many cities have full city exclusions with time constraints for defecating, drinking or loitering without reason. this is a simple city charter or legislative addition and would give the teeth needed to make decisions to help people get off the street, out of predatory areas and away from predators feeding on their savings or other resources. This would enable programs to help get people off substances that may have contributed to their situation.
I think if you crap in the street you have to clean it up. I was dropping off food at my local shelter when a meth head cruised by “oh good what goodies are there” I replied “oh good help is here, please help me bring this stuff in and when dinner time comes you can eat with everyone” she said no and lit up a cigarette after which I explained the shelter playground is too close for her to be smoking, she did nothing. If you only want to see reality go and see it.
As a person who has livied in Grants Pass most of their life, this is amazingly good news. There are so many recent homeless people who have traveled here to camp in our parks, leave hyper dermic needles in my yard and pretty much destroy what was nice town.
I am very sorry that your nice town has suffered and hope very much they have the balls to enforce it and get those able to clean it up
Kenneth-Props if your service is true, but if you care and know the homeless by name sorry but what your town is doing is not working. Just a thought maybe you could build tiny homes in a field, like the company “pallets” may even donate them, sounds like more county and state resources are needed or the funds are being misused. Also people who need money and have rooms to rent could be subsidized, please look outside the box for funding and resources and what other small towns are doing with limited resources. And meant no disrespect just that many of those do not get up and help but have a lot to say. Peace
@@nobolt7 I’m only doing my duty as you or anyone would, if they had the means, help a person in desperate need. Just IMAGINE what is happening to the homeless in developing countries or restricted nations. My wife is Brazilian and there is a lot of poverty in her country, she has dual citizenship. My wife and I are low income, I’m disabled and filed for social security disability in 2019 and my case is in circuit court, then we were in an auto accident and I have 3 herniated discs in neck and a brain injury and severe spinal stenosis and serious pre-existing health conditions, we are barely surviving yet because of the love of God working in us we can’t stop loving people. Again, I could write a book about it and in addition to the work we did, which you have no evidence it is not true, we worked with Union Gospel Missions and the Rescue Missions in Jacksonville. We have looked into all types of ideas. I’m a degreed engineer with many contacts from Fortune 500 companies, my alumni from 3 universities and as a first responder… We can only serve with the capacity of strength, love and grace that we have and we live for the glory of God. The ONLY reason I replied like I did is because you questioned my commitment to help the homeless with action. In Florida DeSantis recently passed a law, HB 1365, requiring all cities to provide homeless shelters and the state is funding mental health and substance abuse programs, etc. I also studied law and enforce both Federal and State laws, more importantly helping companies come into compliance with the laws and even if they are fined for breaking the law to control the loss and build resilience into the organization. I began to work the chain of command after working with our city’s mayor, who is also our CPA, then sent a letter to our senator and the governor asking for help, etc.
I rarely comment on UA-cam because the emotional part of my brain is severely damaged and I only get discouraged and upset and sometimes it takes me days of weeks to get over bullying or something like it... I just love people so much! My wife says I love people too much. I love writing so maybe I should right an article or paper on: “Can You Love Too Much?” Because sometimes the only thing we have to give is love. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
I’ve gone through a lot in life and it has had its toll on me, but my life is Christ, yes many have forsook me when I was desperate for help, I hold nothing against them, but after all my service as a public servant I need help and few helped. I’ve made a lot of mistakes too but I aim to always love people. I can empathize with the homeless, poor and disabled. I worked very hard in my career and was working as a national EHS director for Hoerbiger and had to retire because of my disabilities.
Have you sat down with the homeless for hours upon hours, or even minutes, listening to their stories, shaking their hand, hugging them or encouraging them? I know for a fact that this will have more impact on them than a shelter. I believe the soul is eternal and you can gain the whole world but lose your soul.
I only decided to comment because when I heard the decision from the Supreme Court a part of my heart was taken from me and it cut me deep. We have given an open invitation to the mayor to help through any means possible, when he is ready, but in the meantime since the homeless do not have a shelter we love them outside the shelter. Many in the local community have tried some of your ideas, or similar, I know a guy who has land set aside to build a shelter, like you suggested and many in the community have tried to do everything to help but instead they arrest the homeless for trespassing, panhandling and they tear down their only home, tents, etc. And many of them are Vets or widows. Yes there are widows both men and women over 60’s on the streets: this all inhumane and cruel and unusual punishment; oftentimes people treat their pets better than people. Anyways, I hate commenting on UA-cam but I could not hold back in this particular scenario.
Please take a few minutes to sit down and listen to the homeless and show you ‘truly’ care for them because you might be the one who encourages them to get the help they need or whatever to get them out of their desperate situation… Lastly, I oftentimes ask them if they have any friends and most say no for various reasons and I say will I’m your friend.
