This is so beautiful, so heartfelt, so utterly simple and elegant. Her bearing is dignified, her gestures are sober and contained, the voice is full in all registers, the passagio is admirable, she negotiates high and low notes as a consummate technician. I have nothing but praise to this wonderful artist.

One of the all-time greats. Maybe the last of the all-time greats. Who sings anything like this today? Who? Who is even close? Intonation. Great Italian. Means every word. No wobble. Graceful. Faithful to the score. She knows every marking. Levine’s conducting is fine. But she learned this from Muti.

This aria jumps around two octaves and is anything but easy to sing good. But she does it. She goes down in mezzo without sounding strained at all. Magnificent!

They should make more voices like this! This is healthy singing! Full chest resonance throughout the range and no nose or "mask" or "placement" or front projection or other crap that ruin the whole art of singing... Thank you Carol Vaness for demonstrating this!

You mean the crappy approach of Nilsson, Simionato, Freni and others? Bc these last ones, couldn't sing properly, right? LMAO

Seeing Ms. Vaness in person will stand as one of the greatest highlights of my years of attending operas. I first saw her as Vitellia in La Clemenca and had tickets for her Fiordiligi, but, alas, she was ill the night I was there. I was crushed but love her madly anyway. I also saw her Elvira which was unique in its less than severe reading of the role. I miss the ravishing beauty of her tone and the precision of her musicality.

This is hard to surpass! Mrs Vaness always gives a top assingment. Respect. The intesity and lovelyness of her rendition of this rondo is for Olimpys itself!

I agree. I love the way she sang "Per pieta, ben mio, perdona" in one long breath. Most sopranos take a second breath right before perdona. The high to low jumps also did not seem to bother her. The conducting by James Levine is also beautifully paced.

Brava! Sublime performance. I agree with everybody's comments: Ms. Vaness' performance is the ideal interpretation of this remarkable piece of music. Theatrically, she acts the this scene in subtle ways with her facial expressions and gestures but doesn't overdo it. Finally, to paraphrase a old co-worker of mine, "she's nothin' but class!"

3:48 Listen to her integrate her low and high registers on "Che vergogna" with an almost imperceptible extra vowel-"che ver(o)gogna." This lady knows how to saaaaang.
