  • The Champions get the trophy, the Mission to Burnley documentary and the one word that sums up Ashley Barnes - and no, it's not "legend".

"The game was just missing an Ashley Barnes booking" - spot on Mike that would've been the cherry on the cake 🤣

You failed to mention the improvement in his overall play under Kompany's tutelage. His positioning. one-touch lays off,and incisive passing have been a revelation in recent matches. Still, the sublime memory of the Blackburn goalie in the back of the net will follow me to my grave as will the joy of a perfect season. I was a supporter who enjoyed the 1st division championship season but this year, for me, beats that.
P.s. Thanks for your intelligent contributions.

I agree with much that you say, but I do think you are selling Barnes short. He is far, far more than just a shithouse. He might not be the most talented footballer we have had, but he is a really intelligent footballer who has made the most of every bit of talent he has. That has included re-inventing himself on several occasions. Most notably this season. He was completely lost at first, but just before the derby the signs were there. His display at Bournemouth was an absolute masterclass in playing in a completely different role to benefit the team.
I also remember the pundits on MOTD doing a real feature on how good an allround player he was, and how much more there was to his game than most see.

Hi Mike top comments as usual , you mentioned the word legend and its use in connection with Super Bashley . I have to admit I have used that word in the way you do when talking about players , and I agree it is an over used word these days , but in some ways he is a legend because of the way oponents weiwed him and as you correctly said the supporters of other clubs hated him . We have all had players like him who become Iconic figures at a club because of their antics. Joey Barton , was one of these players , I do feel sometimes we need to have players that make you feel that passion again .I give you Mr Ashley Barnes . Not a brilliant footballer but PASSION ! Thank you for great content as usual , I am looking forward with rellish to future episodes ! 🏆 U.T.C.

The excellent Gary Delaney summed it up best. "The word 'legend' has been devalued to such a point that it stopped meaning a mythical hero pulling an ancient sword out of a stone and now means someone unexpectedly coming back from the bar with crisps."
"Iconic" is a good one for Barnes.

I remember when the word Burnley seemed like a rude word for the pundits on Match of the day.
