  • Last week on the NEW Look podcast, Rep. Gallagher was joined by British MP Tom Tugendhat to discuss a growing recognition - both in the United States and the United Kingdom - that security threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will force us to re-evaluate our relationships with China. But years before we came to this realization in the U.S. and U.K., our allies in Australia had not only been sounding the alarm about the malevolence of the CCP, but had been living through these threats to their security. What caused Australia to identify these threats early on, and how did they respond at the national level? How did escalating tensions from the CCP impact their response to the Coronavirus pandemic, and what are they doing to address the crisis?
To explore these questions, Rep. Gallagher is joined by Andrew Hastie, the pride of Perth and an Australian Federal MP. As Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, Andrew is a leading voice on Australian foreign policy, particularly when it comes relations with China. But the two talk about much more than geopolitics and the measures Australia is taking to counter CCP influence. Andrew also teaches Mike about Anzac Day and the accompanying “Gunfire Breakfast,” ways Western Australia is similar to Northeast Wisconsin, and some book suggestions along the way.
The name of the podcast, NEW Look, is a play on the area of Northeastern Wisconsin that Rep. Gallagher represents and President Dwight Eisenhower’s military strategy that
balanced Cold War military commitments with financial concerns. The purpose of the podcast is to examine the issues of the day through the lens of Northeast Wisconsin with a number of different thought-leaders.

First elected in 2016, Rep. Mike Gallagher represents Wisconsin’s 8th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mike is a 7th generation Wisconsin native, born and raised in Green Bay.
Mike joined the United States Marine Corps the day he graduated from college and served for seven years on active duty as a Counterintelligence/Human Intelligence Officer and Regional Affairs Officer for the Middle East/North Africa, eventually earning the rank of Captain. He deployed twice to Al Anbar Province, Iraq as a commander of intelligence teams, served on General Petraeus’s Central Command Assessment Team in the Middle East, and worked for three years in the intelligence community, including tours at the National Counterterrorism Center and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Mike also served as the lead Republican staffer for Middle East, North Africa and Counterterrorism on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Prior to taking office, Mike worked in the private sector at a global energy and supply chain management company in Green Bay.
Mike currently serves on the House Armed Services, and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. He also serves as the co-chair of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. For more information visit: gallagher.house.gov

I doubt Hastie will ever come close to being our PM. Thank goodness for that. But you are welcome to take him. He'd make a good imperialist neocon.

Thanks for another educational, entertaining and worthwhile alternative to watching the tube Rep. Gallagher. Your questions always lead to great content helping us to better understand the issues we SHOULD be concerned about. As a restaurateur for the past thirty five years, I look forward to some possible input on how small businesses will be able to reopen safely. I'm sure Reed, (a long time friend and former patron) is proud of your accomplishments!
