If the real criminal hadn't made enemies in jail and gotten shanked, he would have outlived the innocent man, who would have died in jail with a wrongfully-given life sentence, taken away from his kids by faulty police work. And circumstantial witness, that was actually the real criminal's girlfriend lying to keep her guilty boyfriend free; that's right, the police didn't even know who their star witness was, the girlfriend of another suspect, because no other leads were followed. The innocent man went in a young man, and came out a senior that needed a cane to walk, his kids now all grown up without him. And I might add, the US jail system doesn't like to release people once they've been proven wrongly jailed, either; once the truth is known it takes a long time and a long process to get the innocent finally released. It can take many months, after the person has been cleared of the crime.

Confession alone shouldn't be used to convict someone when it is achieved by elongated interrogation, deprivation of sleep or food or manipulation. A LOT of prisoners in America supposedly "confess" under duress to crimes that in reality they didn't do and are later freed thanks to DNA evidence (or never). Either change the interrogation technique or don't accept it as proof of committing the crime.

DNA evidence wasn't being used when they were prosecuted. The prosecution used their forced confessions during their trial to convince the jury that they were indeed guilt. Additionally, the case was so highly publicized it may have been impossible to get a fair trial anyway

Executing guilty people for their crimes remains very controversial. Executing those proven innocent should not be. It should never happen.

Confession alone shouldn't be used to convict someone when it is achieved by elongated interrogation, deprivation of sleep or food or manipulation. A LOT of prisoners in America supposedly "confess" under duress to crimes that in reality they didn't do and are later freed thanks to DNA evidence (or never). Either change the interrogation technique or don't accept it as proof of committing the crime.
"Innocent until proven guilty" is how America works, right?
So why do we treat people "guilty, even if proven innocent"???
