- late-season hollyhocks in an English country garden.
In this video we show you how and when to prune and cut back your hollyhock plants. It's still possible to get a small second flush of late hollyhock flower by removing the older flower spikes. If we get a mild autumn these plants can still be in flower through October and early November in the south of England

I love the spiders on flowers 🥰 they are so helpful
We are trying to encourage lots of wildlife into the gardens
Thank you for all the information on hollyhocks. Really love them, and trying to grow here in the USA. Much success and safety in 2021.
You are so welcome! Good luck I hope they grow well for you Katy. Sending you success and good health for 2021 from Norfolk England
Thank you for your video, I was only looking at my hollyhocks at the week end and wandering what to do with them- now I have collected the seeds. I was hoping to move a large plant but now realise this could be a problem. Well I suppose if I dig it out of the lawn hopefully I can grow new plants for the flower beds where they should be.
Glad it was helpful! They really are problematic to move, best to start with a fresh one
I adore hollyhocks, lovely video X
Thanks, they are really worth trying if your climate permits
I wish you could send them to the USA.....I think your Hollyhocks are lovely!
Thank you so much
Hello, I started mine by seed and planted 4 of them and one bloomed end of August grew 9ft tall sec just bloomed a few days ago and it's getting tall. Ohio
That's great news . Let it set seed and hopefully you will get lots more
Brittany, also Ohio. Wondering if yours have come back up yet? I planted a bunch of seedlings last year & only see what I think are 2 plants this spring 😢 these SHOULD flower, but wondering if an animal ate the others? Or they just didn’t survive? I’m so sad there are only 2 (I think), but I’ve covered them with chicken wire to keep them from being eaten🫣
Yoooo you made this at such a good time! I'm going to cut mine back tomorrow:)
Hope you like it!
Tha ks for being sweet to spidey
Thank you
At 2:24, that almost looks like a clump of white pumpkins! Never notice that anatomical similarity with Hollyhocks before
Yes a very similar leave and growth from a distance.
I got tricked into bringing some from my allotment and I love then, thought they were courgette
Thank you for the video! I am wondering if hollyhocks will develop several spikes if pinced in the beginning of their growth? Greetings from Germany, Kerstin 🙋♀️
Most likely a lot of ours seem to be multiple headed
Put some hollyhocks seeds in ground in Belleville Ontario after soeaking them.
Plants are growing tall , what can I expect as the season progresses , and what should I do in the fall , hoping to get them to flower next year or can I expect some color this year , thank in advance for your comments
They probably wont flower until next year but you might be lucky. We cut back any dead or diseased leaves in autumn and leave the healthy green leaves. Our can carry on flowering right into Autumn if its mild. How cold are your winters?
I took one out of a window well and that silly thing decided it would grow in the snow..how dare I move it...
That’s good 😊 I think she did it flower for you
I have a whole batch of first year hollyhocks that are suffering a lot from rust. A lot of the guides I see online are a bit confusing so I have to ask,do you reccomend cutting back all of the rust affected foliage or just the leaves that are the most affected? It seems rust is affecting all but the newest growth in the center of my plants and I don't want my hollyhocks to potentially die
We cut back the worst affected leaves . At end of flowering season I cut back all the affected leaves and juts leave the new growth. this seems to rejuvenate them
I don’t mean to intercept but you can also spray neem oil, that helps too.
@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 how do I order some of your hollyhocks seeds please
Good morning from my Country...Sir.
I would like to know what is Hollyhocks....is it a flowers @ vegetables?
I am sorry for asking...Sir. All the good wishes to you and yours.
Its a flower grown just for the flowers
My Hollyhock is on its second season, this year it seems to be suffering badly with rust disease, I've cut all the infected leaves. Will it have rust next year?
Depends on the season we have had very little rust this year as its been so dry
Hello I hope your well... Do your have seeds from this year... I would really like to plant some next spring... I'm a variety of colours....
They have seeded well and we are using the seeds to seed new areas of the garden and onto the barn this year
@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316fantastic what colours do you have.... Would you be selling seeds soon.... Best regards and stay safe.... I have mallow in my garden but would like Hollyhocks in various colours that would be good for pollinators.....
Hi... Are hollyhocks easy to transplant.... I have three that need moving they are about one foot in height and didn't flower this year....
They are difficult to move as the tap root is very deep and it is quite easy to break. I have been successful moving very young plants when seeded in deep gravel . Personally I would leave them where they are, let them flower next summer and then collect seed and scatter seed where you want them to come up. If you do decide to move them make sure you dig a deep hole under them to try to avoid damaging the deep tap root.
@@gardenerscottageblakeney1316 thank you kindly very much appreciated... I'll get a spade and dig deep around and under them.. I hope they'll survive... Thanks for your help very much appreciated...
Can I stop growing hollyhocks so tall?
Yes if you want them shorter you cut the first flower off they will put up multiple shorter flower spikes
That spiders hughhhhh I’m in Canada and we don’t get them that big ekkkkk I’d freak out if that was on my holly hocks
We seem to have a lot of big spiders this year
We get the big webs across paths and it's horrible if you accidentally walk into them ,with a tiger spider bang in the middle yuk. I leave them alone though as they do a lot of good in the garden hopefully ☺️
That spider was definitely a jump scare for me! Lol
I can't find the address/link for the free seeds
Hi Caroline if you pop over to our blog and leave a comment we will send the information www.blakeney-cottage.co.uk/blog/2020/8/14/our-hollyhocks-seeds-are-ready-early-this-year alternatively send an e-mail to us kate@blakeney-cottage.co.uk

We are not sending out any seeds this year as cost of postage is very high now. We were only sending them within UK in previous years.
